General Information
This manual provides instructions for the Westfalia tow bar. Vehicle manufacturer's specifications for towing load and support load are binding; tow bar values must not be exceeded.
The D-value is calculated using the formula: D = (Trailer Load (kg) x Vehicle Total Weight (kg) / (Trailer Load (kg) + Vehicle Total Weight (kg))) x 9.81 / 1000
The tow bar is intended for towing trailers with ball couplings and for approved load carriers. Any other use is prohibited. Driving must be adapted to road conditions, as towing affects vehicle handling. Always consult the vehicle manufacturer's operating instructions.
Parking Assistance Systems: Installation may cause malfunctions in vehicles with parking assistance if tow bar components are within sensor detection range. Adjust sensor range or deactivate the system if necessary. Detachable or pivoted ball bars may prevent issues if removed from the operating position.
Adhere to the vehicle manufacturer's standard fixing points and national installation approval guidelines. Keep these instructions with vehicle documents.
Installation Instructions
The tow bar is a safety component requiring installation by qualified personnel only. Modifications are prohibited and will void the type approval.
Before installation, remove insulating compound or underseal from the vehicle's mating surfaces for the tow bar. Seal any bare bodywork and holes with anti-corrosive paint.
Installation Process Overview: The manual includes detailed diagrams illustrating the mounting procedure. Key steps involve:
- Accessing the rear underbody and positioning components around the exhaust system.
- Attaching main support brackets to the vehicle frame using specified bolts (e.g., M10x1.25x40, 10.5x30x3, M12x40) and nuts, with critical torque values (e.g., 57 Nm, 95 Nm) indicated for various fasteners.
- Connecting the main tow bar and tow ball assembly using bolts like M12x75.
- Fitting protective covers as shown in the diagrams.
Diagrams: The diagrams visually guide the user through each step, showing the placement of parts and the required hardware and torque specifications.
Operating Instructions
After approximately 1000 km of towing, re-tighten all securing bolts to the specified torque values.
Maintain the tow ball's cleanliness and lubrication. If using a stabilizer system (e.g., Westfalia "SSK"), the tow ball must be grease-free. Refer to specific system instructions.
For safety, discontinue use if the tow ball diameter measures 49.0 mm or less at any point.
Vehicle empty weight increases by 17 kg upon tow bar installation.
Scope of Delivery & Spare Parts
The tow bar kit includes the main tow bar assembly, tow ball assembly, various mounting brackets, and assorted hardware (bolts, nuts, washers). Specific part numbers and quantities are detailed in the manual's parts list.
Diagrams: Pages 4 and 5 provide visual lists of the kit's components and available spare parts.
