Section A: Smart Hub Assembly
Estimated Assembly Time: 20 minutes
What's in the Smart Hub box: Smart Hub, Ethernet cable (10 metres), Ethernet cable (20 metres), Power supply, Mounting bracket, Backplate, Allen key, Assembly screws.
- Insert nano SIM card: Ensure the device is powered off before inserting the nano SIM card. The SIM card must be activated on a compatible rate plan.
- Connect Ethernet cable: Connect the Ethernet cable to the Smart Hub.
- Attach backplate to Smart Hub: Use Phillips screwdriver and assembly screws.
- Attach clamp to bracket: Use a flat screwdriver, metal clamp, and mounting bracket.
- Attach bracket to backplate: Use Phillips screwdriver and assembly screws.
Before you start | Determine mounting location:
- Determine cell tower direction: Align the Smart Hub Outdoor Unit to face the cell tower. Use the compass feature in the TELUS Connect app to find the direction. If unable to determine direction, contact TELUS at telus.com/Selfinstall.
- Determine a mounting location: Choose a location that avoids obstructions like tall trees. If obstructions are present, try a location facing the same direction. Avoid mounting the pole on the roof to mitigate lightning risks. Install the mounting point as high as possible, but not as the highest point on the house.
Connect to power: Connect the power supply to the Smart Hub.
Allow Smart Hub to boot up: The Smart Hub may take up to 10 minutes to boot up.
Test Smart Hub signal strength: Look for 2 or 3 solid LED lights indicating a good signal. Weak signal is indicated by 1 or 0 solid LEDs. The LEDs illuminate for up to 15 minutes after boot-up.
LED Indicators:
- SIGNAL: Solid (2-3 LEDs) indicates strong signal; Solid (1-0 LEDs) indicates weak signal.
- NETWORK: Flashing indicates 3G/4G connection; Solid indicates 5G connection; Off indicates no network service or no SIM card.
- LAN: Solid indicates the LAN port is connected; Flashing indicates a hardware issue; Off indicates the LAN port is not connected.
- POWER: Solid indicates power is on; Flashing indicates the Wi-Fi Hub is pairing; Off indicates power is off.
Section B: Mounting Arm Installation
Estimated Installation Time: 30 minutes
What's in the box: Mounting arm, Wall anchors, Wall screws.
Before you start | Install mounting arm:
- Plan cable route: Ensure a clear path for the Ethernet cable. If the outlet is more than 10 metres away, use the 20-metre Ethernet cable.
- Drilling: If drilling a hole, ensure it is obstruction-free and test signal strength before drilling. Use a 19mm (3/4 inch) drill bit and apply silicone sealant around the drilled hole. A hole facing upwards is recommended.
- Mounting Methods: Mount through a corner opening of a door, garage, or window, or through a drilled hole in the wall.
- Determine your siding: Follow instructions based on siding type (Wood, Vinyl, Aluminum, Stucco, Brick, Stone).
- Masonry installation: Use wall anchors, an 8mm (5/16 inch) drill bit, and a hammer (optional).
- Attach mounting arm: Secure the mounting arm using wall anchors and screws.
- Attach Smart Hub to mounting arm: Mount the Smart Hub onto the installed arm.
Check Smart Hub signal strength: Fine-tune the position of the mounting arm and Smart Hub to improve signal strength. If issues persist, visit telus.com/Selfinstall.
Section C: TELUS Wi-Fi Hub Installation
Estimated Installation Time: 15 minutes
What's in the box: TELUS Wi-Fi Hub, Ethernet cable, Power supply.
Before you start:
- Ensure 2+ inches of space all around the Wi-Fi Hub to prevent overheating.
- Place the Wi-Fi Hub in a clear, open space, off the floor, and away from thick walls or heavy objects.
- Avoid placing the Wi-Fi Hub closer than 2 metres to devices like microwaves, cordless phones, or Bluetooth devices.
- Position the TELUS Wi-Fi Hub as close as possible to the central Wi-Fi usage area of your home. Use an extension cable if necessary.
- Connect TELUS Wi-Fi Hub: Connect the Ethernet cable to the LAN/WAN port and the power supply to the Power port.
- Booting up TELUS Wi-Fi Hub: The Wi-Fi Hub will boot up, indicated by flashing lights. This process takes about 30 seconds.
- Connect to your new TELUS Wi-Fi: Connect your smartphone or tablet to the new Wi-Fi network (e.g., TELUSXXXX).
- Test your Wi-Fi speed: Download speeds of more than 5 Mbps and upload speeds of more than 1 Mbps indicate good Internet connectivity. Run a speed test using the TELUS Connect app or a web browser.
Configure your network: Use the TELUS Connect app to set your Wi-Fi Network Name and Password. If you set them to match your previous Wi-Fi, your devices will reconnect automatically.
Troubleshooting:
- No lights or no Internet connection: Unplug the power cable, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
- Persistent issues or password problems: Reset the Wi-Fi Hub to factory defaults.
- Cannot connect to TELUS network: Power cycle the Smart Hub.
- Wi-Fi connectivity issues: Power cycle the TELUS Wi-Fi Hub.
