Automatic Transmission

Operating the Automatic Transmission

To select Drive (D) on a stationary vehicle, first apply the brake pedal. Then, turn the rotary selector to the front gear position (D). In this mode, you can use the paddle shifters. Note: After ceasing to use the paddle shifters, the fully automatic D mode will be restored.

To return to the fully automatic mode (D), pull and hold the right paddle shifter for 2 seconds. The D symbol will appear on the instrument panel, and the corresponding indicator light next to the rotary selector will illuminate.

To select Sport mode (S), press the selector and turn it to the S position. The S symbol will appear on the instrument panel, and the corresponding indicator light next to the rotary selector will illuminate.

Manual Shifting (CommandShift™)

Manual shifting can be used when Sport mode (S) is selected. Use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel to select gears. Pull the left paddle shifter (-) to downshift and the right paddle shifter (+) to upshift. To return to fully automatic Sport mode, pull the right paddle shifter and hold it for two seconds.

To return to normal driving mode, move the selector lever back to the D position.

Press the Lo button to select the low gear range. The low gear range should only be used for low-speed maneuvering, including more challenging off-road conditions. Do not use the low gear range for normal road driving.

If the vehicle detects a transmission malfunction, a warning message will appear on the information panel, and gear selection may be restricted. Seek assistance from qualified specialists immediately.

Important Safety Notes:

When parking the vehicle, select the P (Park) position and engage the parking brake. Before leaving the vehicle, move the selector lever to P and turn off the ignition.

If the engine is turned off while the selector is in any position other than P, the selector will move to P before retracting into the center console.

Range Change Indicators

When the Hi (High) range is in use, the range indicators do not illuminate.

In the Lo (Low) range, the green indicator on the information panel and the status indicator light on the Lo button illuminate.

During range changes, the indicator lights flash:

Changing Range While Driving

It is recommended to change ranges while the vehicle is stationary. Experienced off-road drivers may switch from Lo to Hi while driving, as described below.

Note: Shifting from Hi (High) to Lo (Low) can only be done when the vehicle is stationary.

Shifting from Low Range to High Range

When driving at speeds up to 60 km/h (38 mph), select Neutral (N). Press and release the Lo button to select the Hi range. Note: If the Lo button is pressed before selecting N, the message SELECT NEUTRAL FOR RANGE CHANGE will appear on the information panel.

The status of the range change will be displayed on the information panel. After the change, shift the transmission to D.

Hill Descent Control (HDC) System

When HDC is engaged in Drive (D), Sport (S), or manual shifting mode, a lower gear is selected and maintained for maximum engine braking. If the selector is moved to D from Sport mode (S) or CommandShift™ is deactivated, the selected gear is maintained until the descent is complete. Refer to Section 158, HDC CONTROLS.

Shifting Ranges on a Stationary Vehicle

With the vehicle stationary and the engine running, select Neutral (N). Press the Lo button, then release it. After a few seconds, confirmation of the range change will follow.

Emergency Driving Mode

Note: The driver should be aware that vehicle power will be limited. Paddle shifters will be disabled. In such cases, seek assistance from qualified specialists as soon as possible.

In case of a mechanical or electrical malfunction, the transmission functions will be restricted. The selector can still be moved to P, R, N, D, and S to allow the vehicle to be driven to a safe location. Drive at a safe speed.

In the event of certain malfunctions, the selector may lock in one position until the ignition is switched off. If the selected gear indicator flashes, it indicates that the driver's request could not be fulfilled. Move the selector to N and try again. If the selected gear cannot be engaged, contact a dealer or authorized workshop.
