Starting the Engine

WARNING! Do not start or leave the engine running in an enclosed space. Exhaust gases are toxic and can cause loss of consciousness and death if inhaled.

CAUTION! If the engine fails to start, do not continue trying, as this will discharge the battery. Unburned fuel passing through the exhaust system may also damage the catalytic converter.

Important Notes

The electronic key may not be detected if it is inside a metal object or shielded by a device with a backlit LCD screen, such as a smartphone, laptop (in a laptop bag), or game console. Keep the electronic key away from these items when attempting keyless access, starting the engine, or performing a backup start procedure.

To Start the Engine:

  1. Ensure a valid electronic key is in the vehicle.
  2. Ensure the gear selector is in Park (P) or Neutral.
  3. For automatic transmission: Press the brake pedal.
  4. For manual transmission: Fully press the clutch pedal.
  5. Press and release the START/STOP button. Refer to the DRIVER CONTROLS section.

Notes on Cold Weather Starting

In low ambient temperatures, the delay before the diesel engine starts will increase due to longer glow plug operation. During this extended delay, keep the brake pedal (automatic transmission) or clutch pedal (manual transmission) pressed.

Once the engine starts, release the brake pedal (automatic transmission) or clutch pedal (manual transmission) if it is safe to do so.

Driver Occupancy Control

WARNING! If the vehicle is left in a drivable state with the engine running, the driver occupancy control function (part of the intelligent Start/Stop system) will not prevent the vehicle from moving.

For more information on the driver occupancy control function, see DRIVER EXIT.

Stopping the Engine

It is recommended to stop the engine when the vehicle is stationary. Ensure the electric parking brake (EPB) is engaged and:

Press and release the START/STOP button. The engine will stop, and the vehicle's ignition system will also turn off.

To Stop the Engine of a Moving Vehicle:

CAUTION! It is not recommended to turn off the engine while driving. However, if an emergency situation requires you to stop the engine, do the following:

  1. Press and hold the START/STOP button for more than 2 seconds, OR
  2. Press the START/STOP button twice within 3 seconds.

In either case, the message "Engine Stop Button Pressed" will be displayed on the instrument panel.

Turning on the Ignition

To turn on the ignition system without starting the engine:

  1. Automatic transmission: Ensure the electronic key is in the vehicle and the brake pedal is not pressed.
  2. Manual transmission: Ensure the electronic key is in the vehicle and the clutch pedal is not pressed.

CAUTION! If you press the brake or clutch pedal while the START/STOP button is pressed, the engine will start.

  1. Press and hold the START/STOP button until the indicators on the instrument panel illuminate.
  2. Release the START/STOP button.

Starting the Engine by Push-Starting

If the engine shuts off while driving, you can initiate a push-start procedure. To initiate a push-start:

NOTE: The START/STOP button will be inactive for 2 seconds after the engine is turned off.

Backup Engine Start Procedure

The backup engine start procedure is used to disable the alarm and start the engine in the following situations:

The backup engine start procedure can only be used if the "Smart Key Not Recognised. Reposition or Place as shown and Press Start Button" message is displayed on the instrument panel.

To perform the backup engine start procedure:

  1. Firmly press the electronic key against the lower part of the steering column with the buttons facing down.

NOTES: Marks on the steering column facilitate finding the correct position.

  1. With the electronic key held in this position:
  1. Press and release the START/STOP button.

Once the engine starts, release the brake pedal (automatic transmission) or clutch pedal (manual transmission) if it is safe to do so.

If the electronic key is not detected or the engine cannot be started, contact a dealer or authorized service center.

If the Engine Does Not Start

ALL VEHICLES:

CAUTION! If the engine does not start when the START/STOP button is pressed and the vehicle was recently in an accident, contact qualified specialists. The vehicle may have sustained damage.

If the engine does not start and the electronic key is in the cabin, perform the following checks:

  1. Turn on the ignition. See TURNING ON THE IGNITION.
  2. Check the instrument panel for messages and illuminated indicators. If necessary, seek qualified assistance. See WARNING LAMPS AND INDICATORS AND INFORMATION MESSAGES.
  3. Turn off the ignition.

Alternatively, if the engine does not start, you may need to reset the security system. To reset the security system, lock and unlock the vehicle. See UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE.

If the engine still does not start, contact a dealer or authorized service center.

FOR VEHICLES WITH PETROL ENGINES ONLY:

If the engine does not start, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure the electronic key is in the vehicle.
  2. Ensure the gear selector is in Park (P) or Neutral.
  3. Press and hold the START/STOP button until the indicators on the instrument panel illuminate.
  4. Automatic transmission: Firmly press the brake pedal.
  5. Manual transmission: Firmly press the clutch pedal.
  6. Slowly press the accelerator pedal and hold it fully depressed.
  7. Press and release the START/STOP button. The engine will begin to crank.
  8. Once the engine starts, release the accelerator pedal.

Once the engine starts, release the brake pedal (automatic transmission) or clutch pedal (manual transmission) if it is safe to do so.

If the engine still does not start, contact a dealer or authorized service center.

ENGINE PRE-START HEATER

CAUTION! Installing an engine pre-start heater does not eliminate the need for antifreeze. An improper antifreeze mixture can damage the engine.

Engines start poorly in very low ambient temperatures. In regions where temperatures frequently drop below -10 °C, installing an engine pre-start heater is recommended. The engine pre-start heater has an insulated connector at the front of the vehicle that connects to a mains power source via a suitable extension cord. The pre-start heater can be left running overnight. Typically, the engine pre-start heater consumes between 0.4 and 1 kWh.

For more information, contact a dealer or authorized service center.
