Screw-Down Crown

Some watch models are equipped with a screw-down crown. If your watch has such a crown, follow these instructions:

Screw-Down Crown with Lock

This feature uses a screw mechanism to lock the crown, preventing accidental operation and ensuring water-resistant properties. The crown must be unlocked before use and locked securely after completing operations.

  • How to use the screw-down crown: Keep the crown locked when not in use.
  • [How to unlock the crown]: Turn the crown counter-clockwise. The crown is unlocked and ready for use.
  • [How to lock the crown]: After completing an operation with the crown, turn it clockwise with a slight push until it stops. When locking the crown, turn it carefully, ensuring it engages with the thread. Do not force the crown, as this may damage the thread.

Setting the Time

The watch features hour, minute, small second, and 24-hour hands, along with chronograph hour and minute hands and a 1/5 second chronograph hand.

Dial Description: The dial displays time using hour, minute, and small second hands. The chronograph function includes dedicated minute and 1/5 second hands, and a 24-hour indicator hand.

Crown Positions:

  • a: Normal position: The crown is in its standard position.
  • b: First click: Pull the crown out to the first click for date setting.
  • c: Second click: Pull the crown out to the second click for time setting.

Procedure for Setting Time:

  1. Pull the crown out to the second click when the small second hand is at the 12 o'clock position.
  2. Turn the crown to set the current time.
  3. Return the crown to the normal position simultaneously with a time signal.

Notes:

  • If the crown is pulled out to the second click while the chronograph is running, the chronograph will continue to operate.
  • The 24-hour hand moves in sync with the hour hand.
  • The date changes at midnight. Ensure the AM/PM mode is set correctly using the 24-hour hand.
  • When setting the minute hand, it is recommended to first set it 4-5 minutes ahead, then return it to the exact time.

Setting the Date

The date must be set correctly after the time has been set.

Procedure for Setting Date:

  1. Pull the crown out to the first click.
  2. Turn the crown clockwise until the desired date appears.
  3. Return the crown to the normal position.

Notes:

  • The date should always be set after the time has been set.
  • Adjust the date at the end of months with fewer than 31 days (February, April, June, September, November).
  • Do not set the date between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM to avoid errors in date change.

Chronograph

The chronograph can measure time up to 60 minutes in 1/5 second increments. It will stop after 60 minutes of operation.

Standard Measurement:

Diagram: Shows the chronograph sub-dials (chronograph minute, 24-hour, small second) and the main dial.

  • START/STOP: Button A controls starting and stopping the chronograph.
  • RESET: Button B resets the chronograph hands.

Lap Time Measurement:

Diagram: Illustrates the sequence for lap time measurement using buttons A and B.

  • START: Press button A.
  • STOP: Press button A.
  • LAP RESET: Press button B.
  • RESET: Press button B.

Before using the chronograph, ensure all hands are set to the '0' position.

Important Notes:

  • The buttons may feel stiffer than on regular watches due to the chronograph's construction; this is not a malfunction.
  • Pressing button B while the chronograph is running will reset it. Be careful not to press it accidentally.

Button Lock Function

(For models with button lock)

Locking Buttons A and B:

Diagram: Shows buttons A and B on the watch case, with indicators for 'Lock' and 'Unlock'.

  • To unlock: Turn the button counter-clockwise until it stops clicking. The button can now be pressed.
  • To lock: Turn the button clockwise until it stops clicking. The button cannot be pressed now. This prevents accidental pressing.

Tachymeter

(For models with a tachymeter scale)

Measuring Average Speed:

This function helps measure the average speed (km/h or mph) of a vehicle.

  1. Use the chronograph to determine the time taken to travel 1 km or 1 mile.
  2. The chronograph second hand moves along the Tachymeter scale, indicating the average speed per hour.

Diagram: A tachymeter scale is shown on the watch bezel. A chronograph second hand points to a value.

Example 1:

  • Chronograph second hand reading: 40 seconds
  • Tachymeter scale reading: '90'
  • Calculation: '90' (number on tachymeter scale) x 1 (km or mile) = 90 km/h or mph.

The tachymeter scale is usable for times under 60 seconds.

Example 2: If measuring speed over 2 km (miles) or 0.5 km (miles), and the chronograph second hand indicates '90' on the tachymeter scale:

  • For 2 km: '90' x 2 = 180 km/h or mph.
  • For 0.5 km: '90' x 0.5 = 45 km/h or mph.

Measuring Hourly Productivity:

  1. Use the chronograph to determine the time taken to complete one operation.
  2. The number on the tachymeter scale indicated by the chronograph second hand shows the average number of operations performed per hour.

Example 1:

  • Chronograph second hand reading: 20 seconds
  • Tachymeter scale reading: '180'
  • Calculation: '180' x 1 operation = 180 operations/hour.

Example 2: If 15 operations were completed in 20 seconds:

  • '180' x 15 operations = 2700 operations/hour.

Telemetre

(For models with a telemetre scale on the dial)

The telemetre system provides an approximate indication of the distance to the source of light and sound, such as lightning strikes.

The system measures the time elapsed from seeing the lightning flash until hearing the thunder. Lightning flashes are seen almost instantly, while sound travels at approximately 0.33 km/sec. The telemetre scale assumes sound travels at 1 km in 3 seconds (at 20°C).

Diagram: Shows a telemetre scale on the watch dial and the chronograph second hand indicating distance.

How to Use the Telemetre:

Before use, ensure the chronograph hands are reset.

  1. START (light flash): Press button A as soon as you see the light.
  2. STOP (thunder sound): When you hear the sound, press button A to stop the chronograph.
  3. Read the indication on the telemetre scale pointed to by the chronograph second hand.

Diagram: Illustrates the START (light) and STOP (sound) points for telemetre measurement.

Example: Approximately 3 km.

Note: The chronograph second hand moves in 1-second increments and may not point precisely to the telemetre scale. The scale is accurate for measured times under 60 seconds.

ATTENTION: The telemetre system provides only an approximate distance. It should not be relied upon as the sole means to avoid danger. The speed of sound varies with atmospheric temperature.

Battery Replacement

Diagram: A battery icon with '3 Years' indicated.

The watch battery is designed to last approximately 3 years. However, the factory-installed battery is for initial testing, so actual life may be shorter. Replace the battery promptly when its charge is low to prevent malfunctions.

For battery replacement, it is recommended to contact an authorized SEIKO dealer and use a SEIKO SR936W battery.

Notes:

  • If the chronograph is used for over an hour daily, battery life may be reduced.
  • After battery replacement, reset the time and calendar.

CAUTION

  • Do not remove the battery from the watch.
  • If battery removal is necessary, keep it away from children. Seek immediate medical attention if swallowed.

PRECAUTION

  • Never short-circuit the battery terminals, expose it to heat, disassemble it, or expose it to fire. The battery may explode, overheat, or ignite.
  • Do not recharge the battery; it may leak or rupture.
