This guide provides essential information for setting up and connecting your FRITZ!Box 7581.
Connecting Computers and Network Devices
Connect computers and other network devices to the FRITZ!Box either wirelessly via WLAN or using a network cable. You can establish the wireless LAN connection using WPS or by entering the FRITZ!Box network key on the wireless device. A computer can be connected with the FRITZ!Box using only one of these methods.
WLAN Quick Connection (WPS)
You can connect wireless LAN devices with the FRITZ!Box using WPS:
- Click the WLAN icon in the notification area of your operating system's task bar.
- A list of wireless networks will appear on your screen.
- Select the wireless network of your FRITZ!Box 7581 and click "Connect".
- Press the "WPS" button on the FRITZ!Box until the "WLAN" LED begins flashing.
Selecting the Internet Connection Type
The FRITZ!Box can be connected in different ways:
Connection via VDSL or WAN Port
The FRITZ!Box is connected directly to VDSL or via the WAN port to a modem (e.g., a fiber optic modem). The FRITZ!Box requires Internet account information for the connection.
To configure your FRITZ!Box, you can use its user interface, accessible in any web browser by entering http://fritz.box

Connection via WAN Port to Cable/Fiber Modem
The FRITZ!Box is connected via the WAN port to a cable modem or fiber optic modem. The FRITZ!Box uses the existing Internet connection and does not require its own Internet account information.
LED Status Indicators
The FRITZ!Box features several LEDs to indicate its status:

Power ⚡ | Blinking | FRITZ!Box is starting up. |
Power ⚡ | Solid | FRITZ!Box is ready for operation. |
Internet ? | Blinking/On | Connection to a modem or router exists, but the Internet connection is not enabled or is being established. |
Internet ? | Solid | An Internet connection is active. |
WLAN ? | Blinking | Applying wireless LAN settings, turning wireless LAN on or off, or performing/aborting WPS. |
WLAN ? | Solid | Wireless LAN function is active. |
Fon ? | Solid | A telephone connection is active. |
Info ℹ️ | Green | FRITZ!OS is being updated, Stick & Surf is running, or freely configurable. |
Info ℹ️ | Red | An error occurred. Open http://fritz.box in a web browser for details. |
Connecting Telephones
Registering DECT Cordless Telephones
You can register and configure up to 6 cordless (DECT) telephones on the FRITZ!Box:
- Put your DECT telephone into registration mode.
- Enter the PIN "0000" on the telephone.
- Press and hold the "DECT" button on the FRITZ!Box.
Connecting Analog Telephones
Connect analog devices to the sockets labeled "FON 1" and "FON 2".
Safety Instructions
- Do not install the FRITZ!Box during an electrical storm.
- During a storm, disconnect the FRITZ!Box from the power supply and from the Internet.
- The ventilation slits of the FRITZ!Box must never be obstructed.
- Do not place the FRITZ!Box on surfaces sensitive to heat.
- Connect the FRITZ!Box to an easily accessible power outlet.
- The FRITZ!Box is intended for indoor use only.
