Getting to Know Your Z-Wave Device

This Z-Wave Plus In-Wall Smart Dimmer offers advanced control for your lighting.

  • Turn lights ON/OFF and adjust dim levels manually or remotely via your Z-Wave controller.
  • Include the dimmer in multiple groups and scenes for customized automation.
  • Use in single-pole installations or with up to four add-on switches (#12728 or #46200) for 3-way or 4-way wiring configurations.
  • Compatible with all incandescent and most dimmable CFL/LED bulbs.
  • Features auto line/load detection.
  • Uses a standard toggle wallplate for single-gang installations (wallplate not included).
  • Z-Wave certified for simple pairing and integrated home automation.
  • Screw terminal installation requires wiring connections for Line (hot), Load, Neutral, and Ground. A Traveler wire is required for 3-way or 4-way installations.

Installation

Tools You Will Need

  • Screwdriver (Phillips and Flathead)
  • Pliers

Wiring Information

IMPORTANT! The fixture controlled by the Z-Wave In-Wall Smart Dimmer must not exceed 600W incandescent; 300W dimmable CFL/LED. The dimmer is designed only for use with permanently installed fixtures.

Single-Pole Wiring

  1. Shut off power to the circuit at the circuit breaker or fuse box. IMPORTANT! Verify power is OFF to the switch box before continuing.
  2. Remove the wallplate.
  3. Remove the switch mounting screws.
  4. Carefully remove the switch from the switch box. DO NOT disconnect the wires.
  5. Identify the dimmer terminals:
    • A. GROUND (Green/Bare wire)
    • B. LINE or LOAD (Black wire)
    • C. LINE or LOAD (Black wire)
    • D. TRAVELER (Red/Other wire - only for 3-way/4-way installations)
    • E. NEUTRAL (White wire)
  6. Disconnect the wires from the existing switch and label them according to their terminal connection.
  7. Connect wires to dimmer terminals:
    • Connect the green or bare copper ground wire to the GROUND terminal (A).
    • Connect the black wire from the light fixture to either LINE/LOAD terminal (B or C).
    • Connect the black wire from the electrical service panel (hot) to the other LINE/LOAD terminal (B or C).
    • Connect the white wire to the NEUTRAL terminal (E) (use a jumper wire if needed).
    • NOTE: The TRAVELER terminal (D) is only used for 3-way or 4-way wiring and should remain insulated if installing in a 2-way system (one dimmer & one load).
  8. Insert the dimmer into the switch box, being careful not to pinch or crush wires.
  9. The dimmer must be independently mounted (vertical position only).
  10. Secure the dimmer to the box using the supplied screws.
  11. Mount the wallplate.
  12. Reapply power to the circuit at the fuse box or circuit breaker and test the system.

Multi-Switch Wiring (3-way or 4-way)

For 3-way or 4-way installations, the Enbrighten Add-on Switch (#12728 or #46200) is required. Connecting the traveler terminal of this dimmer to a standard switch will cause damage or improper function. Refer to the add-on switch manual for detailed instructions.

Wire Requirements

  • Use 14AWG or larger wires suitable for at least 80°C for all connections.
  • Wire strip length: 5/8 inch (16mm).
  • UL specified screw tightening torque: 14Kgf-cm (12lbf-in).

Basic Operation

Control the connected light ON/OFF and adjust dim levels manually or remotely.

Manual Control

Use the front panel toggle:

  • To Turn ON: Press and release the toggle UP.
  • To Turn OFF: Press and release the toggle DOWN.

Adjust Dim Level

  • To Increase Brightness: Press and hold the toggle UP.
  • To Decrease Brightness: Press and hold the toggle DOWN.

Advanced Features

LED Indicator Cycle

The LED behind the toggle can serve as a guide light or status indicator. Cycle through options by pressing UP three times, then DOWN once quickly:

  • 1. LED is OFF all the time (default).
  • 2. LED is ON all the time (illuminates switch in the dark).
  • 3. LED is ON when the load is OFF (guide light in the dark).
  • 4. LED is ON when the load is ON (indicates the dimmer is ON).

LED Bulb Adjustments

To address potential flickering or strobing with certain LED/CFL bulbs, adjust minimum and maximum dim/brightness thresholds.

Minimum Dim Threshold

Procedure: Press OFF button four times, then ON button once quickly. Adjust brightness using ON/OFF buttons until flickering stops. The LED will stop flashing 10 seconds after setting.

Note: Configurable via Z-Wave parameter 30 (1-99, default 1).

Maximum Brightness Threshold

Procedure: Press ON button four times, then OFF button once quickly. Adjust brightness using ON/OFF buttons until flickering stops. The LED will stop flashing 10 seconds after setting.

Note: Configurable via Z-Wave parameter 31 (1-99, default 99).

Z-Wave Network Integration

Adding Your Device

  1. Follow your Z-Wave controller's instructions to add a device.
  2. When the controller is ready, press and release the dimmer toggle UP.
  3. If prompted for an S2 security code, refer to the QR code/security number on the product packaging or label. Enter the 5-digit code.

Removing and Resetting

  1. Follow your Z-Wave controller's instructions to remove a device.
  2. When the controller is ready, press and release the dimmer toggle UP.

Factory Defaults

Quickly press the ON (UP) button three times, then immediately press the OFF (DOWN) button three times. Use only if the primary controller is missing or inoperable.

Z-Wave Interoperability & Association

This product can be included and operated in any Z-Wave network with other certified devices. Non-battery operated nodes act as repeaters to increase network reliability.

Association Command Class (3 Groups):

  • Group 1: Lifeline, Multi-level Switch report.
  • Group 2: Basic Set (controlled by local load).
  • Group 3: Basic Set (controlled by double-pressing ON or OFF).
  • Each group supports up to 5 nodes.
