Checking Fluid Levels

Regularly checking and maintaining the fluid levels in your vehicle is crucial for its proper operation and longevity. This guide outlines the procedures for checking and topping up various essential fluids.

Engine Oil

For Engines 2.7 (Diesel) and V6 (Petrol):

Check the engine oil level weekly. If the oil level drops suddenly or significantly, consult a qualified specialist. Check the oil level on a cold engine with the vehicle on a level surface. If checking on a warm engine, turn off the ignition and wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump. Do not start the engine.

Procedure:

  1. Pull out the oil dipstick and wipe it with a lint-free cloth.
  2. Fully insert the dipstick and pull it out again to check the oil level. Ensure the oil level does not fall below the minimum mark or the risk on the dipstick.

General Recommendations for Oil Level:

For Engines 3.0 (Diesel) and V8 (Petrol):

Check the engine oil level weekly. If the oil level drops suddenly or significantly, consult a qualified specialist. If the dashboard displays a LOW OIL PRESSURE warning, find a safe place, immediately stop the engine, and consult a qualified specialist. Do not start the engine until the cause is rectified.

Before checking the oil level, ensure:

Checking Oil Level via Display:

  1. Turn the ignition on (without starting the engine).
  2. Ensure the selector is in the 'P' (Park) position.
  3. Using the control buttons on the driver information module, select the 'Service Menu' (see page 69, 'Information and Vehicle Settings Menu').
  4. In the Service Menu, select 'Show oil level'. The instrument panel will display the current oil level and recommendations for topping up. Add oil according to the instructions.

Display Messages:

Topping Up Engine Oil:

Failure to use oil that meets the required technical specifications may void the warranty and lead to increased engine wear, sludge formation, and increased emissions, potentially causing engine damage. Overfilling the oil can cause serious engine damage. Add oil in small quantities and recheck the level to avoid exceeding the maximum level.

  1. Unscrew the oil filler cap.
  2. Add oil according to the electronic oil dipstick display (for 3.0L Diesel and V8 Petrol engines) or to bring the level between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick (for 2.7L Diesel and V6 Petrol engines).
  3. Wipe up any spilled oil.
  4. Recheck the level after 10 minutes (for 3.0L Diesel and V8 Petrol engines) or 5 minutes (for 2.7L Diesel and V6 Petrol engines).

Note: To raise the oil level from MIN to MAX on the dipstick, approximately 1.5 L (2.6 pints) of oil is required.

Engine Oil Specifications:

ModelSpecification
V6 Petrol EngineUse only SAE 5W-30 engine oil conforming to WSS-M2C913-C specification.
V8 Petrol EngineUse only 5W-20 engine oil conforming to WSS-M2C925-A specification.
Vehicles with Diesel EngineUse only 5W-30 engine oil conforming to WSS-M2C934-B specification.

Land Rover recommends Castrol.

Coolant

Operating the engine without coolant can cause serious engine damage. Check the coolant level in the expansion tank at least once a week (more frequently with high mileage or severe operating conditions). Always check the level when the system is cold.

Maintain the coolant level between the COLD FILL RANGE marks on the side of the expansion tank. Do not pay attention to the coolant visible in the upper part of the tank.

If the level drops suddenly or significantly, have the vehicle inspected by a qualified specialist.

Topping Up Coolant:

Top up to the upper level mark located above the COLD FILL RANGE text on the side of the expansion tank. Use only a 50% water and antifreeze mixture, such as Castrol SF.

Note: In an emergency, if the specified antifreeze is unavailable, fill the cooling system with pure water, but be aware that this will reduce frost protection. Do not add or use conventional antifreeze. If you cannot resolve the issue yourself, consult a qualified specialist.

After topping up, securely close the cap until it clicks.

Antifreeze

Antifreeze is toxic; ingesting antifreeze can be fatal. Keep antifreeze containers closed and out of reach of children. If you suspect accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention.

If the fluid comes into contact with skin or eyes, immediately rinse thoroughly with water.

Using non-approved antifreeze can negatively affect the cooling system and reduce engine life.

Antifreeze can damage painted surfaces; immediately remove any spilled fluid with absorbent material and rinse the area with a water-based car shampoo solution.

Antifreeze contains essential anti-corrosion additives. The antifreeze content in the coolant should be maintained at 50% ± 5% year-round, not just in cold weather. To ensure the anti-corrosion properties of the coolant are maintained, it should be checked annually and completely replaced every ten years, regardless of mileage. Failure to do so may lead to corrosion of the radiator and engine components.

The specific gravity of a 50% antifreeze solution at 20°C (68°F) is 1.068, providing freeze protection down to -40°C (-40°F).

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is highly toxic. Keep brake fluid containers closed and out of reach of children. If you suspect accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention.

If the fluid comes into contact with skin or eyes, immediately rinse thoroughly with water.

Do not spill brake fluid on a hot engine, as it may cause a fire.

Do not drive if the fluid level is below the MIN mark. If the brake pedal travel becomes noticeably longer or the brake fluid level decreases significantly, seek immediate qualified assistance. Driving under these conditions can lead to increased braking distance or complete brake failure.

If the fluid level in the brake/clutch fluid reservoir drops below the recommended level, a red warning light will illuminate on the instrument panel.

Note: If the warning light illuminates while driving, stop the vehicle as soon as safely possible by gently applying the brake pedal. Check the fluid level and top up if necessary.

Brake fluid can damage painted surfaces. Immediately remove any spilled fluid with absorbent material and rinse the area with a water-based car shampoo solution.

Use only new fluid from a sealed container (fluid from opened containers or previously drained fluid absorbs moisture, which can negatively affect performance and should not be used).

Topping Up Brake Fluid:

  1. Before removing the reservoir filler cap, clean it to prevent dirt from entering the reservoir.
  2. Remove the filler cap.
  3. Fill the reservoir to the MAX mark using Shell DOT4 ESL brake fluid. If Shell DOT4 ESL fluid is unavailable, you can use a low-viscosity DOT4 brake fluid that meets ISO 4925 Class 6 and Land Rover LRES22BF03 requirements.
  4. Replace the cap and the closing panel.

Power Steering Fluid

Power steering fluid is highly toxic. Keep containers sealed and out of reach of children. If you suspect accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention.

If the fluid comes into contact with skin or eyes, immediately rinse thoroughly with water.

Do not start the engine if the fluid level has dropped below the MIN mark. Otherwise, serious damage to the power steering pump may occur.

The fluid level can be checked through the translucent body of the reservoir. The fluid level should be between the MIN and MAX marks.

If the fluid level drops noticeably, seek qualified assistance immediately. Otherwise, serious damage to the power steering pump may occur. If the fluid level is slowly dropping, you can add fluid to the upper mark to allow the vehicle to reach a service station. However, it is recommended to consult a qualified specialist before continuing to drive.

Check and top up the fluid when the vehicle is on a horizontal surface, with the engine off and the system cold. Do not turn the steering wheel after stopping the engine.

Topping Up Power Steering Fluid:

  1. Before removing the reservoir filler cap, clean it to prevent dirt from entering the reservoir.
  2. Remove the filler cap.
  3. Fill the reservoir with Texaco Cold Climate PAS fluid to the level between the MIN and MAX marks.
  4. Replace the filler cap.

Power steering fluid can damage painted surfaces. Immediately remove any spilled fluid with absorbent material and rinse the area with a water-based car shampoo solution.

Do not fill the reservoir above the MAX mark.

Windshield Washer Fluid

Some windshield washer fluids are flammable, especially those with a high concentration of alcohol or undiluted fluid, which can be dangerous if exposed to an ignition source. Do not allow washer fluid to come into contact with open flames or sources of ignition.

If the vehicle is operated at temperatures below 4°C (40°F), use a washer fluid with frost protection. In cold weather, using fluid without frost protection can lead to reduced visibility and an increased risk of collision.

Do not use antifreeze or a vinegar-based water solution in the washer fluid reservoir – antifreeze can damage painted surfaces, and vinegar can damage the windshield washer pump.

Spilling washer fluid can cause discoloration of body panels. Avoid spilling, especially when using undiluted fluids or high-concentration solutions. If spillage occurs, immediately rinse the affected area with water.

Washer fluid is supplied to the washer jets for the windshield, rear window, and headlight washers. Check the fluid level in the reservoir and top up at least once a week. Always top up the washer fluid to prevent the windows from freezing.

Periodically activate the washers to check the operation and aim of the jets.

Topping Up Washer Fluid:

  1. Before removing the reservoir filler cap, clean it to prevent dirt from entering the reservoir.
  2. Remove the filler cap.
  3. Fill the reservoir until the fluid is visible in the filler neck.
  4. Replace the filler cap.
