Checking and Topping Up Vehicle Fluids
Engine Oil
Check engine oil level weekly. If the oil level drops significantly, consult a qualified specialist. If a "LOW OIL PRESSURE" message appears, stop the vehicle safely, turn off the engine, and consult a specialist. Do not restart the engine until the cause is resolved.
Before checking the oil level, ensure the vehicle is on a level surface, the engine is at operating temperature (oil is warm), and the engine has been switched off for 10 minutes to allow the oil to stabilize.
- Turn on the ignition (without starting the engine).
- Ensure the selector is in the 'P' (Park) position.
- Using the buttons on the driver information module, select the Service Menu (see page 62, "Vehicle Information and Settings Menu").
- In the Service Menu, select "Show Oil Level". The current oil level and topping-up recommendations will be displayed. Add oil according to the instructions.
The oil level indicator shows the current level. Messages to the right of the indicator recommend necessary actions.
If the oil level is within the normal range, "Oil Level OK" will be displayed. No oil needs to be added.
If the oil level is below the required level, a message will indicate the amount of oil to add, e.g., "Add 0.5 L". Add the recommended amount of oil.
If "Oil Level Overfill" is displayed, seek qualified assistance immediately. Do not use the vehicle, as this can cause serious engine damage.
If "Oil Level Underfill" is displayed, add 1.5 L (2.6 pints) of oil, then recheck the level.
The "Oil Level Unavailable" message may appear when the oil level has not yet stabilized. Turn off the ignition, wait 10 minutes, and check the oil level again.
If a "ENGINE OIL LEVEL CONTROL SYSTEM FAULT" warning appears, consult a qualified specialist.
Topping Up Engine Oil
Caution: Using oil that does not meet the required technical specifications may void the warranty and lead to increased engine wear, sludge formation, and increased emissions, potentially causing engine damage. Overfilling the engine with oil can cause serious engine damage. Add oil in small quantities and recheck the level to avoid exceeding the maximum level.
- Unscrew the oil filler cap.
- Add oil as indicated on the display.
- Wipe away any spilled oil.
- Recheck the oil level after 10 minutes.
Use oil that meets the required technical specifications and is suitable for the climatic conditions in which the vehicle is operated.
Note: To raise the oil level from MIN to MAX on all models, approximately 1.5 L (2.6 pints) of oil is required.

Land Rover recommends Castrol oils.
Coolant Level
Check the coolant level in the expansion tank at least once a week, or more often if the vehicle has high mileage or is operated in severe conditions. Always check the level when the system is cold.
Maintain the coolant level between the "COLD FILL RANGE" marks on the side of the expansion tank. Do not pay attention to the coolant visible at the top of the tank.
If the level drops suddenly or significantly, have the vehicle inspected by a qualified specialist.
Caution: Do not remove the filler cap on a hot engine, as escaping steam or hot fluid can cause severe burns. Avoid spilling antifreeze onto a hot engine, as this can cause a fire. Slowly unscrew the filler cap to release any pressure before removing it completely.
When traveling in areas where the available water contains salt, use fresh (rain or distilled) water if possible. Using salt water can cause significant engine damage.
Note: In an emergency, if the specified antifreeze is unavailable, fill the cooling system with clean water. Be aware that this will reduce frost protection. Do not use conventional antifreeze. If you are unsure, consult a qualified specialist.
Top up to the upper level mark, located above the "COLD FILL RANGE" text on the side of the expansion tank. Use only a 50% water and Castrol SF antifreeze mixture.
After topping up, securely screw the cap back on until it clicks.
Antifreeze
Caution: Antifreeze is toxic. Ingestion of antifreeze can be fatal. Keep antifreeze containers sealed and out of reach of children. If you suspect accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention. If the fluid comes into contact with skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.
Using non-approved antifreeze can negatively affect the cooling system and reduce its service life.
Antifreeze can damage painted surfaces; immediately wipe away any spills with an absorbent material and rinse the area with a water and car shampoo solution.
Antifreeze contains essential anti-corrosion additives. The antifreeze content in the coolant should be maintained at 50% ± 5% year-round. To ensure the anti-corrosion properties are maintained, the coolant should be checked annually and completely replaced every ten years, regardless of mileage. Failure to do so may lead to corrosion of the radiator and engine components.
The specific gravity of a 50% antifreeze solution at 20°C (68°F) is 1.068, which provides freeze protection down to –40°C (–40°F).
Brake Fluid
Brake fluid is highly toxic. Keep containers sealed and out of reach of children. If you suspect accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention. If the fluid comes into contact with skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.
Caution: Do not spill brake fluid onto a hot engine, as this can cause a fire. Do not drive if the brake fluid level is below the MIN mark. If the brake pedal travel feels significantly longer or if there is a noticeable decrease in brake fluid, seek qualified assistance immediately. Driving under these conditions can lead to increased braking distance or complete brake failure.
If the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir drops below the recommended level, the red warning light on the instrument panel will illuminate.
Note: If the warning light illuminates while driving, stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so, by gently applying the brakes. Check the fluid level and top up if necessary.
Topping Up Brake Fluid
Brake fluid can damage painted surfaces. Immediately remove any spilled fluid with an absorbent material and rinse the area with a water and car shampoo solution.
Use only new fluid from a sealed container. Fluid from opened or previously drained containers absorbs moisture, which can negatively affect performance and should not be used.
- Before removing the reservoir filler cap, clean it to prevent dirt from entering the reservoir.
- Remove the filler cap.
- Fill the reservoir to the MAX mark using Shell DOT4 ESL brake fluid. If Shell DOT4 ESL is unavailable, you can use a low-viscosity DOT4 brake fluid that meets ISO 4925 Class 6 and Land Rover LRES22BF03 requirements.
- Replace the cap and the cover panel.
Check the fluid level weekly, when the vehicle is on a level surface (more often if the vehicle has high mileage or is operated in severe conditions).
To check the brake fluid level, you may need to remove the left or right under-hood cover, depending on whether the vehicle has left-hand or right-hand drive (left cover for left-hand drive). See page 218, "Removing Under-Hood Covers".
The fluid level can be checked without removing the filler cap, through the transparent side of the reservoir. The brake fluid level should be between the MAX and MIN marks.
Power Steering Fluid
Power steering fluid is highly toxic. Keep containers sealed and out of reach of children. If you suspect accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention. If the fluid comes into contact with skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.
Caution: Do not start the engine if the fluid level has dropped below the MIN mark. This can cause serious damage to the power steering pump. If the fluid level drops significantly, seek qualified assistance immediately. Otherwise, serious damage to the power steering pump may occur. If the fluid level drops slowly, you can add fluid up to the upper mark to allow the vehicle to reach a service center. However, it is recommended to consult a qualified specialist before continuing to drive.
Check and top up the fluid when the vehicle is on a level surface, with the engine switched off and the system cold. Do not turn the steering wheel after the engine has been switched off.
The fluid level can be checked through the translucent reservoir body. The fluid level should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
Topping Up Power Steering Fluid
Power steering fluid can damage painted surfaces. Immediately remove any spilled fluid with an absorbent material and rinse the area with a water and car shampoo solution.
Do not fill the reservoir above the MAX mark.
- Before removing the reservoir filler cap, clean it to prevent dirt from entering the reservoir.
- Remove the filler cap.
- Fill the reservoir with Texaco Cold Climate PAS fluid to the level between the MIN and MAX marks.
- Replace the filler cap.
Dynamic Stabilization System Fluid
Dynamic stabilization system fluid is highly toxic. Keep containers sealed and out of reach of children. If you suspect accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention. If the fluid comes into contact with skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.
Caution: Do not start the engine if the fluid level has dropped below the MIN mark. This can cause serious failure of the dynamic stabilization system. If the fluid level drops significantly, seek qualified assistance immediately. If the fluid level drops slowly, you can add fluid up to the upper mark to allow the vehicle to reach a service center. However, it is recommended to consult a qualified specialist before continuing to drive.
Do not drive the vehicle to a service center if there is a risk of leaking fluid coming into contact with hot surfaces, such as the exhaust system.
Check and top up the fluid only when the engine is switched off and the system is cold. Do not turn the steering wheel after the engine has been switched off.
The level can be checked without removing the cap, through the transparent side of the reservoir. The fluid level should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
Topping Up Dynamic Stabilization System Fluid
Dynamic stabilization system fluid can damage painted surfaces.
Windshield Washer Fluid
Some windshield washer fluids are flammable, especially high-concentration or undiluted fluids. Avoid contact with ignition sources. Do not allow washer fluid to come into contact with open flames or sources of sparks.
If the vehicle is operated at temperatures below 4°C (40°F), use a freeze-protected washer fluid. In cold weather, using fluid without freeze protection can impair visibility and increase the risk of collision.
Do not use antifreeze or a vinegar-water solution in the washer fluid reservoir. Antifreeze can damage painted surfaces, and vinegar can damage the windshield washer pump.
Spilling washer fluid can cause discoloration of body panels. Avoid spills, especially with undiluted or high-concentration fluids. If spills occur, immediately rinse the affected area with water.
Topping Up Washer Fluid
The washer fluid is pumped to the jets for the windshield, rear window, and headlight washers.
Check the level in the reservoir and top up at least once a week. Always top up the washer fluid to prevent the windows from freezing.
Periodically operate the washers to check the functionality and aim of the jets.
- Before removing the filler cap, clean it to prevent dirt from entering the reservoir.
- Remove the filler cap.
- Fill the reservoir until the fluid is visible in the filler neck.
- Replace the filler cap.
