Enclosure and Mounting

Each IQ4/IO Module is housed in a polycarbonate enclosure styled to complement the IQ4E controller. Modules are available in 70 mm or 105 mm widths. Integral spring clips on the back allow for easy attachment and release from a standard TS35 DIN rail. Rotating clear polycarbonate covers provide access to top and bottom I/O channel connections. IQ4/IO Modules must be installed in a secondary enclosure with a minimum protective rating of IP20 (or equivalent) or mounted outside normal reach (e.g., in a plenum). Modules can be mounted horizontally or vertically, but not upside down or on their back.

Input/Output Channels

Supported Channel Types

The following types of input and output channels are supported:

  • Universal Input/Output (UIO)
  • Universal Input (UI)
  • Digital Inputs (DI)
  • Digital/Relay Output (DO)
  • Analogue Outputs (AO)

Cable Screening

The use of screened cable for input and/or output connections is optional. It is generally not required unless cables pass through electrically noisy environments. If screened cable is used, the screen must be connected to the local panel/enclosure ground and left unterminated at the far end.

Universal Input/Output (UIO)

These channels function as one of the following, determined by the controller strategy:

  • Thermistor input
  • Voltage input
  • Digital input
  • Current input
  • Analogue output

Example Wiring Descriptions:

  • Thermistor Input: Used for a thermistor (NTC 10 kΩ @ 25°C), potentiometer (0 to 200 kΩ), or fan speed control. The thermistor bridge resistor is 12 kΩ with a 3.3 V bridge supply.
  • Voltage Input: Used with a 0 to 10 Vdc source.

Digital Inputs (DI)

Digital inputs are used for volt-free contacts, logic circuits (e.g., TTL, CMOS), open collectors (transistors), or open drains (FETs). The volt-free contact has a nominal wetting current of 270 µA; the input is ON when the contact is closed. Open collectors or open drains must be able to sink 270 µA; the input is ON when the transistor or FET conducts. Logic circuits must be able to sink 270 µA; the input is ON when the applied voltage is less than 2 Vdc (minimum 0 V) and OFF when greater than 3.5 Vdc (maximum 50 Vdc). Voltage levels between 2 Vdc and 3.5 Vdc may cause indeterminate operation.

Example Wiring Descriptions:

  • Volt-free contact / Logic circuit: Shows connections for a 270 µA current source to a logic circuit or volt-free contact.
  • 24 Vac Circuit: Digital inputs can monitor 24 Vac circuits. Example wiring shows a 24 Vac source connected via a load (e.g., >1.6 kΩ or <1.6 kΩ with a series resistor) to the input.

Current Input

Used for 0 to 20 mA sources, which can be loop-powered or externally powered. The output terminal can source up to a maximum of 20 Vdc to power the sensor in loop-powered mode. Note that if the sensor output current is 20 mA, the voltage across the sensor will be at least 10 V if the module supply voltage is not less than 22V. For higher minimum sensor voltage requirements, increase the module supply voltage or use an external supply.

Example Wiring Descriptions:

  • Loop Powered: Shows a sensor connected directly to the module's input terminals.
  • Externally Powered: Shows a sensor connected to an external power supply and the module's input terminals.

Universal Inputs (UI)

These channels are set by the controller strategy to function as voltage input, current input, thermistor input, or digital input (volt-free contact, open collector/drain, or logic). Input noise rejection is a minimum of 60 dB series mode rejection at the input power supply frequency. Specifications for voltage, current, and thermistor inputs are similar to those for UIO channels.

Analogue Output (AO)

Provides a variable voltage between 0 to 10 Vdc. The output can source up to 20 mA and sink up to 3 mA. This output is used for variable control of actuators, converters, and lighting dimmers.

Example Wiring Description: Shows a load connected to the 0-10 Vdc output terminals.

Digital/Relay Outputs (DO)

These channels provide a single-pole dry contact changeover relay. The relay contacts close (NO makes with C) when the output channel is ON. The volt-free contact has a nominal wetting current of 2.5 mA. Open collectors or open drains must be able to sink 2.5 mA. Logic circuits must be able to sink 2.5 mA, with specific voltage thresholds for ON/OFF states.

Example Wiring Description: Shows a relay output connected to a load, with connections for POWER SUPPLY and LOAD.

I/O Bus

IQ4/IO modules interconnect with each other and the controller via the I/O bus, which comprises power and signal connections: +24 Vdc, Data Hi, Ground, Data Lo, and 0 V. Access to the I/O bus on the IQ4E controller is via a connecting point on its right-hand side. Each IQ4/IO module has similar connecting points on both sides, enabling daisy-chaining. A short rigid interconnector (IQ4/IC/LINK) is available for connecting adjacent modules; one is supplied with each module.

I/O Bus Length and Configuration

Maximum I/O bus length depends on the cable type and configuration:

Product ConfigurationCable TypeMaximum I/O Bus Length
IQ4E or IQ4NC/32/XNC with IQ4/IO modules onlyBelden 3084AUp to 100 m (109 yards)
Belden 3084AUp to 300 m (328 yards) if IQ4/IO modules are within 100m (109 yards) of a power supply
Belden 7895AUp to 300 m (328 yards)
Any other combination using XCITE/IO modules or IQ3XCITE controllerUp to 30 m (33 yards)*

*Maximum 10 m (11 yards) for certain system configurations. Refer to XCITE/IO Modules Data Sheet (TA201352) and XCITE/IO Installation Instructions - Mounting (TG200627).

For all installations, if the bus voltage at the I/O module drops below 19.2 V at full load, install another power supply at that module.

Maximum Number of Modules

Up to 30 modules can be connected to the I/O bus, depending on the configuration:

Product ConfigurationMaximum No. of Modules
IQ4E controller with IQ4/IO modules only30
Any combination using XCITE/IO modules or IQ3XCITE controller15

Ensure the controller supports the required number of I/O channels.

Bus Termination

The I/O bus must be terminated at the farthest end from the controller. A plug-in terminator (IQ4/IC/TERM) is supplied with the IQ4E controller.

Earthing/Grounding Arrangements

Correct earthing/grounding is essential. The I/O bus ground connects to earth/ground via the controller. Modules in the same secondary enclosure are earthed via the I/O bus. For modules in different enclosures or I/O bus cables exceeding 1 m (39"), a local earth/ground connection must be provided. All DIN rails must be earthed/grounded.

Module Power Supply

I/O modules are typically powered from the controller via the I/O bus, derived from the controller's 24 Vdc supply. The maximum current available depends on other controller demands. Refer to controller data sheets for I/O bus current details.

Maximum Current Consumption per Module

ModuleMaximum Current Consumption
8UIO30 mA
4UIO+ 20 mA per loop-powered current input + up to 20 mA per analogue output
8UI25 mA
16DI40 mA (all inputs ON)
8DI30 mA (all inputs ON)
8AO20 mA + up to 20 mA per output
8DO40 mA (all relays ON)
4DO30 mA (all relays ON)
8AO/HOA40 mA + up to 20 mA per output
8DO/HOA60 mA (all relays ON)

If the total current requirement exceeds the controller's maximum, or for long bus runs to prevent voltage drop, additional 24 Vdc power supplies may be needed. Additional supplies are also required if the current flow through a module's power line exceeds 1 A, necessitating splitting or segmenting the I/O bus power line.

Additional Power Supplies

When installing an additional power supply along the I/O bus, the supply output must be isolated from earth (ground) and comply with relevant EMC and safety standards. Trend offers suitable auxiliary power supplies. If an external supply is used, the normal 24 Vdc I/O bus connection between modules is not made; the external supply is wired between the 24 Vdc and 0 V terminals. The 0 V connection must be continuous for the entire I/O bus length. The standard cable adapter (IQ4/IC/ADPT) is used for connecting external power supply units. An example shows modules split into groups powered by the controller and external PSUs.

Indicators

Various indicators provide feedback on module and input/output status.
