AT&T U-verse TV Remote Control User Guide

Installing Batteries

The remote control requires two AA size (1.5V) Alkaline batteries to operate. For optimal performance, replace batteries every nine months.

  1. On the back of the remote, press the battery cover tab forward, lift, and remove the battery cover.
  2. Insert two (2) AA-size batteries, matching the + and – symbols with the battery pictures.
  3. Replace the battery cover and test the remote by pressing the AT&T key. The AT&T key should light up, indicating proper battery insertion.

Controlling Other Devices

To control other devices with your U-Verse TV Remote Control, you must program it to recognize the types of devices you have. Section 1 guides you through this process. After completing Section 1, the volume and channels will consistently control the U-verse TV Receiver, regardless of the remote's mode. If you wish to alter this behavior or have the POWER key affect multiple devices, follow the steps in Section 2. To reset any settings, refer to Sections 3 and 4.

1. Programming the Remote to Control Other Devices

To use the U-verse TV remote control for your other devices, you need to program one or more of the TV, DVD, or AUX buttons at the top of the remote. There are two methods:

  • Method A: Manually - Use this method if your device is listed in the Manufacturer Code List at the end of this manual.
  • Method B: Using the Automatic Search - Use this method if your device is not listed in the Manufacturer Code List.

Note: The AUX button can be programmed to operate a VCR, Home Theater In A Box (HTIB), Receiver, or Amplifier.

A. Manually

  1. Power on the device you want to program.
  2. Locate the 4-digit setup code for your device from the Manufacturer Code List in this manual. If your device is not listed, use Section B (Automatic Search). If multiple codes are listed for your device, you may need to repeat steps 2-7 to find the correct one.
  3. Press and hold the appropriate mode key (TV, DVD, or AUX) on the remote control for the device you want to program.
  4. While holding the mode key, press the OK key.
  5. Release both the mode key and the OK key. All mode keys should flash twice. You have 10 seconds to proceed to step 6.
  6. Enter the appropriate 4-digit setup code for your device using the number keys (0-9) on the remote.
    • If the mode key flashes three times, a correct code has been entered.
    • If the mode key gives a long flash, an invalid code was entered. Start over at step 3.
    • If all mode keys give a long flash, the remote control has timed out. Start over at step 3.
  7. Point the remote control at the programmed device and press the POWER key once. The device should turn off. If it does not, repeat steps 2 through 6, trying each code for your brand until the correct one is found.
  8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 to program another device.

Note: If programming is interrupted, the remote may time out, indicated by a red flash of the mode keys. You will need to start over.

Once programmed, press the appropriate mode key to operate the selected device. Press the AT&T mode key to use the remote for your AT&T U-verse TV Receiver again.

Combination Devices Note: For integrated units (e.g., TV/DVD), program each component separately. The Manufacturer Code List distinguishes codes: TV codes start with “1”, DVD codes with “2”, and AUX codes with “3”. Some combination devices may require the original remote to switch components.

B. Using the Automatic Search

  1. Turn on the device you wish to program.
  2. Point the remote control at the device.
  6. Enter 922 using the number keys on the remote. The selected mode key will flash twice, indicating correct entry.
  7. For TV or DVD modes, press and release the PLAY key. For AUX mode, press and release the PLAY key, then press 1 for VCR, 2 for Receiver/Tuner, 3 for Amplifier, or 4 for Home Theater In A Box (HTIB). The AUX mode keys will flash twice, indicating correct entry.
  8. Press the FF button multiple times until the device turns off.
  9. Press the ENTER key (bottom right) to save the code on the remote control.
  10. Verify the code works by pressing the mode key, then the POWER button, to turn the device back on. If it does not work, start again at step 2.
  11. Once programmed, press the appropriate mode key to operate the selected device. Press the AT&T mode key to use the remote for your AT&T U-verse TV Receiver again.

Note:

  • Pressing any key other than PLAY, ENTER, POWER, EXIT, REW, FF, or number keys 1-4 will result in a long red flash from the selected mode key (error message), and the remote will return to normal operation. You will need to start over.
  • If programming is interrupted, the remote may time out, indicated by a red flash of the mode keys. You will need to start over.

2. Setting Up Your Volume, Channel, and Power Options

By default, your power, volume, and channel controls send commands to the U-verse TV receiver regardless of the remote's mode. For example, in DVD mode, volume still controls the U-verse TV receiver. To change this behavior, follow these instructions:

A. Volume Control Set-Up Options

Volume commands are initially sent to the U-verse TV receiver. Once the TV mode key is programmed, volume commands are sent to the TV from all mode keys. If you prefer volume commands to consistently control a different device (e.g., a home theater system), follow instructions in Section I. For volume commands to control different devices based on the selected mode, go to Section II.

I. Volume Always Controls the Same Device

  1. Press and hold the AT&T key on the remote control.
  2. While holding the AT&T key, press the OK key.
  3. Release both the AT&T key and the OK key. All mode keys will flash twice, indicating programming mode.
  4. Enter 955 using the number keys on the remote. The AT&T key will flash twice, indicating correct entry.
  5. Press the mode key for the device you want to always receive volume commands. The selected mode key will flash three times, indicating successful assignment and return to normal operations.

Volume commands will now be directed to the selected device regardless of the remote's mode.

II. Volume Control Depends on Device Selected

Volume settings can be reconfigured to independently control the volume for each device (e.g., in AUX mode, the receiver controls audio; in TV mode, the TV controls audio).

  5. Press the ENTER key. The AT&T key will flash three times, indicating successful assignment and return to normal operations.

B. Channel Selection Set-Up Option

By default, the remote control sends channel commands to the U-verse TV receiver in all modes, preventing accidental TV channel changes when in TV, DVD, or AUX modes. You can change this behavior in two ways:

  • I) Channel commands always go to a single device (other than U-verse TV receiver).
  • II) Channel commands go to different devices depending on the mode selected (e.g., TV mode channels go to the TV, DVD mode channels go to the DVD player).

Refer to the appropriate section for each.

I. Channel Always Controls the Same Device

  1. Press and hold the AT&T key on the remote control.
  2. While holding the AT&T key, press the OK key.
  3. Release both the AT&T key and the OK key. All mode keys will flash twice, indicating programming mode.
  4. Enter 966 using the number keys on the remote. The AT&T key will flash twice, indicating correct entry.
  5. Press the mode key to which you want channel commands to always be sent. The selected mode key will flash three times, indicating success and return to normal operations.

Channel commands will now be directed to the selected device regardless of the remote's mode.

II. Channel Control Depends on Device Selected

  5. Press the ENTER key. The AT&T key will flash three times, indicating successful assignment and return to normal operations.

If any key other than the mode keys or ENTER is pressed, the AT&T key will flash red (error), and the remote will return to normal operation. You will need to start over. If the remote times out during programming, you will need to start over.

C. Power Control Set-Up Options

By default, the POWER key only controls the U-verse TV receiver's power state. After programming the TV mode key, the TV and U-verse TV receiver will power on/off simultaneously. You can also opt to power devices individually by pressing the applicable mode key followed by the POWER key.

I. To Have Multiple Devices Power Off with the Power Key

To power multiple devices on/off simultaneously with the POWER key (up to 4 devices), follow these instructions:

  1. Press and hold the AT&T key on the remote control.
  2. While holding the AT&T key, press the OK key.
  3. Release both the AT&T key and the OK key. All mode keys will flash twice, indicating programming mode.
  4. Enter 977 using the number keys on the remote. The AT&T key will flash twice, indicating correct entry.
  5. Press the AT&T key on the remote control. The AT&T key will flash twice, indicating correct entry.
  6. Press the TV key on the remote control. The TV key will flash twice, indicating correct entry.
  7. Press each additional mode key (e.g., DVD, AUX) you wish to include. Each selected mode key will flash twice, indicating correct entry.
  8. Press the ENTER key to complete. The last selected mode key will flash three times, indicating successful assignment and return to normal operations.

Note: Pressing any key other than the mode keys and ENTER will cause the AT&T key to flash red (error), and the remote will return to normal operation. You will need to start over. If the remote times out, you will need to start over.

If programmed devices get out of sync (some turn on, others off), manually turn off the out-of-sync devices, then press the POWER key to turn them all back on. Ensure the remote is pointed directly at the devices for proper operation.

To change the number of devices controlled by the POWER key, restart the procedure from Step 1.

3. Changing and Removing Codes

A. Mode Deactivation

To deactivate a mode key, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the mode key (TV, DVD, or AUX) you wish to deactivate on the remote control.
  2. Without releasing the chosen mode key, press and hold the OK key simultaneously.
  3. Release both the mode key and the OK key. All mode keys should flash twice.
  4. Enter the appropriate 4-digit code for the mode you are deactivating:
    • TV: 1254
    • DVD: 2254
    • AUX: 3254
The mode key will flash three times, indicating correct entry and return to normal operation. If an invalid code is entered, the selected mode key will flash long (error). If the remote times out, you will need to start over.

B. Reassigning Your Mode Keys to Another Device

The TV, DVD, and AUX keys are pre-configured for specific devices: TV key for TV & HDTV, DVD key for DVD players, and AUX key for VCRs, Home Theater In A Box (HTIB), Receivers, and Amplifiers. You can change these keys to operate different devices by copying an existing mode key's programming to another. For example, to use the AUX key for a second DVD player, first program one DVD player to the DVD mode key, then copy that programming to the AUX key. Afterward, reprogram the original DVD mode key for the second DVD player.

  1. Program the desired device by following the steps in Section 1.
  2. Press and hold the AT&T key on the remote control.
  3. Without releasing the AT&T key, press and hold the OK key simultaneously.
  4. Release both the AT&T key and the OK key. All mode keys will flash twice, indicating programming mode.
  5. Enter 944 using the number keys on the remote. All mode keys will flash twice, indicating correct entry.
  6. Press the mode key you want to copy the codes FROM (e.g., TV, DVD, or AUX). The selected mode key will flash once.
  7. Press the mode key you want to copy the codes TO. The selected mode key will flash three times, indicating successful reassignment and return to normal operations.

After copying, both keys will share the same program code. You can then reprogram the original mode key for a new device.

Note: Pressing any key other than the mode keys will cause the AT&T key to flash red (error), and the remote will return to normal operation. If the remote times out, you will need to start over.

4. Resetting to Factory Defaults

A. Resetting the Remote Control to Factory Default Settings

  1. Press and hold the AT&T key on the remote control.
  2. Without releasing the AT&T key, press and hold the OK key.

  4. Enter programming code 900 using the number keys on the remote. The AT&T key will flash three times, indicating successful code entry and that the remote has been reset to default settings.

Note: Pressing any key other than the number keys will cause the AT&T key to flash red (error), and the remote will return to normal operation. If the remote times out, you will need to start over.

B. Resetting the Volume, Channel, and Power Programming

  1. Press and hold the AT&T key on the remote control.
  2. Without releasing the AT&T key, press and hold the OK key.
  3. Release both the AT&T key and the OK key. All four mode keys will flash twice, indicating programming mode.
  4. Enter programming code 902 using the number keys on the remote. The AT&T key will flash three times, indicating successful code entry to reset Volume, Channel, and Power to defaults, and the remote will return to normal operation.

Note: Pressing any key other than the number keys will cause the AT&T key to flash red (error), and the remote will return to normal operation. If the remote times out, you will need to start over.

5. Backlight Control Set-Up Option

The Backlight is set to ON by default. You can toggle the Backlight on or off with this function:

  1. Press and hold the AT&T key on the remote control.
  2. Without releasing the AT&T mode key, press and hold the MENU key simultaneously.
  3. Release both the AT&T mode key and the MENU key. All mode keys will flash twice, indicating programming mode.
  4. Enter 991 using the number keys on the remote. The AT&T mode key will flash three times, indicating successful toggling of the Backlight control.

Note: If the remote control times out before completing the procedure, you will need to start over.
