Char-Broil Patio Bistro 240 (LP Gas) Electronic Ignition Module Replacement Procedure
This document provides a step-by-step guide for replacing the electronic ignition module on the Char-Broil Patio Bistro 240 (LP Gas) grill. It includes instructions in English, French, and Spanish.
Parts List
The following parts are included in the Electronic Ignition Module Replacement Kit:
- #10-24x3/4" Carriage Bolt (1 each)
- #10-24 Wing Nut (1 each)
- Electronic Ignition Module Bracket Front Half (1 each)
- Electronic Ignition Module Bracket Rear Half (1 each)
- Electronic Ignition Module (1 each)
- Electrode Wire (Black wire with one red connector and one black connector) (1 each)
- Ground Wire (Black wire with one ring connector and one black connector) (1 each)
- Lighting Instruction Label (1 each)
Tools Required (Not Included)
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Small Adjustable Wrench or Pliers
Procedure
IMPORTANT: Before beginning, ensure the grill is cool and the control knob is in the OFF position. Read through all steps before starting. Retain hardware for reassembly.
- Step 1: Remove LP Cylinder and Grease Tray.
- Step 2: Remove Battery Cap and Battery. Retain battery for reuse.
- Step 3A: Remove Electronic Ignition Module Wiring. Pull all three (3) wires from the Electronic Ignition Module.
- Step 3B: Remove Electronic Ignition Module Wiring (continued). Remove the electrode wire from the electrode. Discard this wire.
- Step 4: Remove Electronic Ignition Module. Remove the module by unscrewing the nut. Discard the module, nut, and battery cap.
- Step 5: Install Electronic Ignition Module Bracket. Install the new bracket to the front, left leg of the grill. The bracket should be 3 - 3.5 inches below the grill bottom.
- Step 5A: Assemble the two-piece bracket by inserting the tab of the rear half into the slot of the front half.
- Step 5B: Place the assembled bracket onto the front, left leg of the grill.
- Step 5C: Secure the bracket assembly with the carriage bolt and wing nut. Tighten the wing nut by hand.
- Step 6: Install New Electronic Ignition Module. Remove the battery cap and nut from the new module. Place the module into the mounting bracket and install the nut, tightening by hand.
- Step 7A: Install Electrode Wire to Electronic Ignition Module. Attach one end of the electrode wire to the Electronic Ignition Module. The black wire connector fits either connection. Note: Only the black end fits the module; the red end fits the electrode.
- Step 7B: Route the Electrode Wire. Route the red end of the electrode wire through the Grease Tray Rail holes.
- Step 7C: Install Electrode Wire to Electrode. Attach the red end of the electrode wire to the electrode.
- Step 8: Install Ground Wire to Electronic Ignition Module. Attach the push-on connector end of the ground wire to the Electronic Ignition Module.
- Step 9: Install Ground Wire to Front Left Leg Stud. Remove the front leg mounting nut from the front left leg bracket. Place the ground wire ring connector over the stud. Reinstall the nut with the ring connector attached.
- Step 10: Reinstall Battery, Battery Cap, and Grease Tray. Insert the battery into the module (negative end first) and reinstall the battery cap and grease tray.
- Step 11: Verify Proper Operation. Press the ELECTRONIC IGNITION button to verify a rapid spark.
- Step 12: Apply New Lighting Instruction Label. Apply the new label to the bottom shelf, covering old instructions.
- Step 13: Cut Old Ignition Wires at the Switch. Identify and cut the RED and BLACK wires exiting the old ignition switch as close as possible to the switch. Remove and discard the loose wires. Do not cut new wires.
- Step 14: Reinstall the LP Tank.
- Step 15: Attach the LP Regulator. Tighten the LP tank retainer screw and attach the LP Regulator.

Ignitor Lighting Instructions
Do not lean over grill while lighting.
- Turn OFF gas burner control valve.
- Turn ON gas at LP cylinder.
- Open lid during lighting.
- To ignite, push and turn control knob to ignition position. (▶️ or ⚙️)
- Immediately, push and hold ELECTRONIC IGNITION button until the burner lights.
- If ignition does NOT occur in 5 seconds, turn the burner controls OFF, wait 5 minutes and repeat the lighting procedure. If ignitor does not work, follow match lighting instructions.
