Instructions For Repairing Appliances Containing R32
General Instructions
- Before working on systems with flammable refrigerants, perform safety checks to minimize ignition risk.
- Ensure the work area is open or adequately ventilated before breaking into the system or conducting hot work. Ventilation should continue during work to disperse any released refrigerant.
Detection of Flammable Refrigerants
- Never use potential sources of ignition when searching for or detecting refrigerant leaks. Halide torches or detectors using naked flames are prohibited.
- Acceptable leak detection methods include:
- Electronic leak detectors: Sensitivity may need adjustment or re-calibration for flammable refrigerants. Ensure the detector is not an ignition source and is suitable for the refrigerant. Calibrate to a percentage of the LFL (Lower Flammable Limit) of the refrigerant.
- Leak detection fluids: Suitable for most refrigerants, but avoid those containing chlorine, as it can react with the refrigerant and corrode copper pipework. Examples include bubble method and fluorescent method agents.
- If a leak is suspected, extinguish all naked flames. If brazing is required for a leak, recover all refrigerant or isolate the system remotely.
