Panasonic VX707MD Sound Settings
This document outlines the various sound settings and functions available on the Panasonic VX707MD car audio receiver, designed to enhance your listening experience.
Sound Settings
The system offers extensive sound customization options, accessible through the DJ encoder and various buttons.
Human Equalizer (HEQ)
The Human Equalizer (HEQ) provides two modes for adjusting sound quality:
- HEQ Normal Mode: Allows selection from 49 patterns to easily achieve complex equalizer adjustments, catering to music genres or moods.
- HEQ Day & Night Mode: Automatically switches sound quality based on the time of day. It reduces bass in the morning and enhances it at night. Each time period offers 7 patterns.
HEQ Adjustment Visuals:
The HEQ adjustment screen features two axes: the vertical axis controls the richness of low frequencies (Heavy/Light), and the horizontal axis controls the clarity of high frequencies (Soft/Sharp). The center is FLAT (0), with adjustment ranges from -3 to +3 for each axis, creating 49 combinations.
Note: The DAY & NIGHT mode requires the clock to be set correctly.
Selecting Sound Control Mode
To enter sound control modes:
- Press the DJ encoder (SEL button).
- Pressing the button cycles through modes: Normal Mode, Sound Control Mode (p.36-42), and Function Control Mode (p.50-55).
Note: While adjusting settings, you cannot operate buttons in Normal Mode. Return to Normal Mode to use other buttons.
Selecting Sound Settings Functions
After entering Sound Control Mode, use the DJ encoder to select functions:
Rotate the DJ encoder to cycle through:
- HUMAN EQ: Human Equalizer (p.37)
- GRAPHIC EQ: Graphic Equalizer (p.38)
- BAL/FAD: Adjusts front/rear and left/right volume balance (p.40)
- POSITION SEL: Adjusts sound image based on seating position (p.40)
- SUPER BASS: Sets rear speakers for subwoofer output (p.41)
- SDBB SELECT: Enhances low frequencies (p.41)
- CENTER LEVEL: Adjusts center speaker volume (p.42)
Note: If no operation is performed for approximately 10 seconds, the system automatically returns to Normal Mode.
Setting Human EQ
To set the Human EQ:
- Select HUMAN EQ using the DJ encoder.
- Push the DJ encoder to activate adjustment.
- Rotate the DJ encoder to adjust HEQ settings:
- Pushing the encoder up/down selects between Heavy/Light (bass) and Soft/Sharp (treble).
- Rotating the encoder adjusts the selected parameter.
The HEQ display shows the cursor moving and blinking at the adjusted position. The EQ indicator blinks during adjustment and lights up when set.
Graphic Equalizer (GEQ)
GEQ allows you to adjust sound quality by frequency band.
Initial Setting: 0dB for each frequency, adjustable from -12 dB to +12 dB in 2 dB increments.
Adjusting Sound by Frequency
- Select GRAPHIC EQ.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to select a frequency band (e.g., 80Hz, 160Hz, 320Hz, 640Hz, 1.6kHz, 4kHz, 10kHz). The selected frequency band will blink.
- Tilt the DJ encoder up or down to adjust the level for the selected frequency. The cursor moves vertically and blinks at the adjusted level.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each frequency band. The EQ indicator blinks during adjustment and lights up when set.
Saving Adjusted Sound Quality to Memory
You can save GEQ settings (GEQ curve characteristics) to buttons 1 through 6 (up to 6 patterns).
- Select GRAPHIC EQ.
- Press and hold one of the buttons (1-6) for over 2 seconds. The current GEQ curve will be saved to that button. The preset memory number display will blink upon completion.
Note: Saving to a button will overwrite any previously stored GEQ curve.
Recalling Sound Quality from Memory
You can recall saved GEQ curve characteristics with a single button press.
- Select GRAPHIC EQ.
- Press one of the buttons (1-6) that has a GEQ curve saved. The saved GEQ curve will be recalled.
Balance and Sound Image Adjustments
Adjusting Front/Rear and Left/Right Volume Balance (BAL/FAD)
Adjust the volume balance of the front, rear, left, and right speakers.
Initial Setting: CENTER, adjustable from -15 to +15.
- Select BAL/FAD.
- Tilt the DJ encoder up/down to adjust front/rear balance (↑ for front emphasis, ↓ for rear emphasis).
- Tilt the DJ encoder left/right to adjust left/right balance (← for left emphasis, → for right emphasis).
Adjusting Sound Image to Seating Position (POSITION SEL)
Adjust the sound image to match your seating position or the number of passengers. Initial Setting: OFF.
- Select POSITION SEL.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to cycle through positions: OFF (all seats) → RIGHT (front right) → LEFT (front left) → REAR (rear seats) → FRONT (front seats).
Using Rear Speakers as Subwoofer (SUPER BASS)
Utilize the rear speakers connected to the internal amplifier as subwoofers for deep bass. Initial Setting: SBC-SW OFF.
- Select SUPER BASS.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right:
- SBC-SW OFF: For general rear speakers (normal stereo output, high frequencies not cut).
- SBC-SW ON: For using rear speakers as subwoofers (monaural output).
Notes:
- The upper limit of low frequencies output from the rear speakers (cut-off frequency) can be set using DDBC (p.45).
- The timing of sound output from the rear speakers (delay time) can be adjusted using DDBC (p.45).
Enhancing Bass (SDBB SELECT)
Boosts low frequencies output from all four internal amplifier speakers for deep bass. Initial Setting: SDBB OFF.
- Select SDBB SELECT.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to cycle through settings:
- SDBB OFF: Normal stereo output (no bass enhancement).
- SDBB TYPE1: Variable, weak bass enhancement.
- SDBB TYPE2: Variable, strong bass enhancement.
- SDBB TYPE3: Fixed, weak bass enhancement.
- SDBB TYPE4: Fixed, strong bass enhancement.
The SDBB indicator lights up when a setting is applied. The SDBB indicator blinks during adjustment and lights up when set.
Visual Description: Diagrams show SDBB Variable (TYPE1, TYPE2) adjusting balance based on low-frequency input, and SDBB Fixed (TYPE3, TYPE4) providing consistent powerful bass.
Center Speaker and Sound Field Adjustments
Adjusting Center Speaker Volume
Adjust the volume level, delay time, and SPACE effects for the center speaker.
Note: Ensure the center speaker is connected (refer to p.13).
- Adjust Volume Level: Set the volume level so vocals are positioned centrally in front.
- Adjust Delay Time and SPACE: Adjust delay time and SPACE effects.
- Re-adjust Volume Level: Re-adjust the center speaker volume according to the SPACE setting.
CSP Delay Time:
Adjust the timing difference (delay time) for the center speaker output to align with other speakers, ensuring vocals are positioned centrally. Initial Setting: 0ms, adjustable from -10ms to +10ms.
- Moving the DJ encoder towards '←' shortens the delay, making vocals sound closer.
- Moving the DJ encoder towards '→' lengthens the delay, making vocals sound further away.
- 0ms means the center speaker output timing matches other speakers.
Note: The system can reproduce more immersive sound fields with sound field settings.
Reproducing Sound Fields (SPACE)
Reproduces sound fields (spaces) similar to live performance venues within the car cabin. Initial Setting: SPACE OFF.
- Press the SPACE button, then rotate the DJ encoder to select a sound field:
- SPACE OFF: No effect.
- LIVE HOUSE
- CINEMA
- VOCAL
- DISCO
- CONCERT HALL
- JAZZ CLUB
- STADIUM
Note: The SPACE indicator lights up when a sound field is set. Direct memory playback disables SPACE settings.
Adjusting the Spread of the Sound Field (WIDE/NARROW)
Further adjust the spatial spread of the set sound field. Initial Setting: 0, adjustable from -3 to +3.
- Press the SPACE button, then tilt the DJ encoder up or down:
- ↑ (WIDE): Widens the sound field.
- ↓ (NARROW): Narrows the sound field.
Example: With the sound effect set to 'HALL', WIDE reproduces a large hall atmosphere, while NARROW reproduces a small hall atmosphere.
Note: Sound field settings can be made independently for each sound source (FM, AM, CD, MD, TAPE, CHANGER, AUX IN), except for DVD IN.
Subwoofer Output Settings (DDBC)
These settings are for connecting an optional power amplifier (e.g., CY-M9054D) or an amplifier-equipped subwoofer (e.g., CJ-BL100D) to the SUB-W-OUT terminal.
Adjusting Sound Timing (DDBC DELAY Time)
Adjust the output timing of the subwoofer to match the main speakers, eliminating time differences perceived by the listener for a more impactful bass response. Initial Setting: 0ms, adjustable from -10ms to +10ms.
- Select DDBC DELAY.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right:
- '←' shortens delay (subwoofer output is earlier).
- '→' lengthens delay (subwoofer output is later).
0ms aligns the subwoofer and speaker output timing. The subwoofer output display lights up upon adjustment.
Note: DDBC delay time also affects rear speaker output (p.41).
Adjusting Volume Level (DDBC LEVEL)
Adjust the volume level of the subwoofer output. Initial Setting: 0dB, adjustable from -∞dB to +10dB in 2dB increments.
- Select DDBC LEVEL.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right:
- '←' decreases level.
- '→' increases level.
Note: Setting -∞dB silences the subwoofer output.
Adjusting Bass Thickness by Cutting High Frequencies (DDBC FREQ. SELECT)
Set the upper limit of low frequencies (cut-off frequency) to adjust bass thickness by cutting high frequencies. Initial Setting: OFF.
- Select FREQ. SELECT.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to cycle through settings:
- OFF: Normal monaural output, no high-frequency cut.
- 100Hz
- 150Hz
- 200Hz
Note: If using the cut-off frequency and phase adjustment functions of an optional external amplifier, set this unit's DDBC Cut-off Frequency to 'OFF' and DDBC Delay Time to '0ms'. The DDBC cut-off frequency also affects rear speaker output (p.41).
Convenient Functions
Arranging Spectrogram Display
Customize the color tone and movement patterns of the spectrogram display (available for displays 2-12).
- Press and hold the ARRANGE button for over 2 seconds, then rotate the DJ encoder to select one of 6 patterns.
Note: The spectrogram display arrangement changes with each selection.
Selecting Icon Display
Choose from 5 patterns for the upper and lower icon display areas. You can combine different displays.
Initial Setting: Upper: HEQ, Lower: SPACE.
- Select ICON SELECT.
- Tilt the DJ encoder up or down to select the display area (upper or lower).
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to select an icon:
- HEQ: Displays current Human Equalizer setting (upper display only).
- SPACE: Displays current sound field setting.
- MODE: Displays current sound source.
- WAVE: Displays waveform of audio signal level.
- PREOUT: Displays current subwoofer output setting (lower display only).
- CLOCK: Displays the clock.
Note: If the clock is not set, '--:--' will be displayed for the clock.
Setting Display Brightness (DIMMER)
Set the display brightness for when the car's small lights are ON or OFF. Initial Settings: Light ON: FL: MI, CFL: ON; Light OFF: FL: HI, CFL: OFF.
- Press the DIMMER button, then rotate the DJ encoder to select brightness settings:
- FL: HI, CFL: ON
- FL: HI, CFL: OFF
- FL: MI, CFL: ON
- FL: MI, CFL: OFF
- FL: LO, CFL: ON
- FL: LO, CFL: OFF
Key: FL = Display section, CFL = Surrounding illumination. HI = Bright, MI = Medium, LO = Dim. ON = Illuminates, OFF = Turns off.
Temporarily Lowering Volume (MUTE/ATTENUATOR)
Pressing the MUTE (ATT) button temporarily lowers the unit's volume. The volume reduction level depends on the setting (MUTE or ATT).
- Press the MUTE (ATT) button. Pressing the button toggles between MUTE and ATT ON/OFF.
- MUTE ON: Volume becomes 0 (silent).
- ATT ON: Volume drops to approximately 1/10th.
Note: The MUTE indicator blinks when MUTE/ATT is ON.
Scrolling MD Titles
MD title displays can be set to scroll continuously or remain static.
Initial Setting: SCROLL ON.
- Select TITLE SCROLL.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right:
- SCROLL ON: MD titles scroll continuously.
- SCROLL OFF: MD titles scroll once and then stop.
Note: When SCROLL is OFF, pressing the DISP button for 2 seconds scrolls the display once.
Setting Whether to Input External Sources When Switching Sound Sources
When external inputs are not in use, you can prevent them from appearing when switching sound sources.
Initial Settings: DVD IN... OFF, AUX IN... ON.
- Select DVD IN SET.
- Tilt the DJ encoder up or down to select the source to set (DVD IN or AUX IN).
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to set ON or OFF:
- ON: The source can be selected via the SOURCE button.
- OFF: The source cannot be selected via the SOURCE button.
Notes:
- Set DVD IN to 'ON' only when using the digital surround processor (CY-AC300D) for DVD surround sound.
- If connecting an external stereo power amplifier to the FRONT/REAR terminals, set DVD input to 'OFF'.
Setting the Sound Quality Adjustment Mode for HEQ
Choose between two modes for HEQ sound quality adjustment. Initial Setting: HEQ NORMAL.
- Select HUMAN EQ SET.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to select a mode:
- HEQ NORMAL: Select from 49 patterns for easy adjustment.
- HEQ DAY & NIGHT: Automatically switches sound quality based on time of day, with 7 patterns per period.
Note: The DAY & NIGHT mode cannot be selected if the clock is not set.
Other Settings
Enjoying Button Operations with Signal Sounds (VX707)
Set the operational sounds (signal sounds) that play when buttons are pressed. Initial Setting: SIGNAL SOUND / Level 3.
- Select SIGNAL SEL.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to choose the sound type:
- SIGNAL SOUND: Different signal sounds for each operation from the center speaker.
- SIGNAL BEEP1: Beep sound from the center speaker.
- SIGNAL BEEP2: Beep sound from the center speaker.
- SIGNAL BEEP3: Beep sound from the center speaker.
- SIGNAL OFF: Turns off operational sounds.
- Tilt the DJ encoder up or down to adjust the volume level (Levels 1-3).
Confirming Button Operations with Sounds (VX505)
Set whether operational sounds (beep sounds) are output. Initial Setting: BEEP ON.
- Select BEEP SELECT.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right:
- BEEP ON: Operational sounds are output from the center speaker.
- BEEP OFF: Turns off operational sounds.
Setting Functions Operated by DJ Encoder Rotation
Customize functions operated by rotating the DJ encoder. Initial Setting: ROTARY HEQ.
- Select ROTARY SEL.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to choose a function:
- ROTARY HEQ: Operates Human Equalizer sound quality adjustment.
- ROTARY VOL: Operates volume adjustment (rotate right for volume up, left for volume down).
- ROTARY UP/DW: Allows different operations for different sound sources (e.g., frequency tuning for TUNER, track selection for CD/MD/Changer, rewind/fast forward for TAPE).
Selecting Icon Display
Choose from 5 patterns for the upper and lower icon display areas. You can combine different displays.
Initial Setting: Upper: HEQ, Lower: SPACE.
- Select ICON SELECT.
- Tilt the DJ encoder up or down to select the display area (upper or lower).
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to select an icon:
- HEQ: Displays current Human Equalizer setting (upper display only).
- SPACE: Displays current sound field setting.
- MODE: Displays current sound source.
- WAVE: Displays waveform of audio signal level.
- PREOUT: Displays current subwoofer output setting (lower display only).
- CLOCK: Displays the clock.
Note: If the clock is not set, '--:--' will be displayed for the clock.
Setting Spectrogram Display Speed
Adjust the speed of the spectrogram display movement. Initial Setting: SPEANA FAST.
- Select SPEANA SPEED.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right:
- SPEANA FAST: Spectrogram display moves faster.
- SPEANA SLOW: Spectrogram display moves slower.
Setting Unit's Volume During Navigation Mute
Set the unit's volume level when the navigation system's voice guidance is active. Initial Setting: MUTING ON.
Note: This function is active when an optional navigation system (e.g., CN-DV2500D) is connected.
- Select MUTING SEL.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right:
- MUTING ON: Sets the unit's volume to 0 (silent).
- MUTING HALF: Sets the unit's volume to approximately half.
- MUTING OFF: The unit's volume remains unchanged.
Note: 'MUTING' is displayed when navigation mute is active. Volume can only be adjusted with VOL +/- buttons when MUTING OFF is selected.
Setting the Function of the MUTE (ATT) Button
Set how the MUTE (ATT) button functions when pressed, affecting the volume reduction level. Initial Setting: MUTE KEY.
- Select MUTE KEY SEL.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right:
- MUTE KEY: Pressing the MUTE (ATT) button sets volume to 0 (MUTE).
- ATT KEY: Pressing the MUTE (ATT) button reduces volume to approximately 1/10th (ATT).
Scrolling MD Titles
Set MD title displays to scroll continuously or stop after one cycle. Initial Setting: SCROLL ON.
- Select TITLE SCROLL.
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right:
- SCROLL ON: MD titles scroll continuously.
- SCROLL OFF: MD titles scroll once and then stop.
Note: When SCROLL is OFF, pressing the DISP button for 2 seconds scrolls the display once.
Setting Whether to Input External Sources When Switching Sound Sources
Configure whether external inputs (AUX/DVD) appear when switching sound sources. Initial Settings: DVD IN... OFF, AUX IN... ON.
- Select DVD IN SET.
- Tilt the DJ encoder up or down to choose the source to configure (DVD IN or AUX IN).
- Tilt the DJ encoder left or right to set ON or OFF:
- ON: The source can be selected via the SOURCE button.
- OFF: The source cannot be selected via the SOURCE button.
Notes:
- Set DVD IN to 'ON' only when using the digital surround processor (CY-AC300D) for DVD surround sound.
