Keurig Custom™ Use & Care Guide

Get the most from your new Keurig® brewer.

From time to time, Keurig may send software updates for your Keurig Custom™ brewer. This Use & Care Guide will be updated to reflect any changes as necessary. You can always find the latest version of this document on Commercial.Keurig.com.

Before You Brew

Follow these steps for initial setup and your first brew.

  1. 1. Ready & Place

Remove protective film and packing tape from the brewer. Place a large mug (12 oz minimum) on the drip tray.

Illustration: A mug is placed on the drip tray of the brewer.

  2. 2. Rinse & Fill

Remove the water reservoir lid, then lift the reservoir straight up to remove it. If you have a Keurig Water Filter, install it now (refer to its starter kit for instructions). Rinse the reservoir with fresh water and fill to the top of the handle. Replace the lid and water reservoir. Note: Do not use distilled water.

Illustrations: Show removing the water reservoir, filling it to the 'Max Fill' line, and replacing it.

  3. 3. Cleansing Brew

Do not insert a K-Cup® pod. When prompted for a cleansing brew, tap the BREW button to start. Discard the hot water in a sink. This one-time setup process is now complete.

Illustration: The brewer with the 'BREW' button highlighted.

Note: Between brew cycles, the brewer may take about a minute to reheat.

Brew Your First Cup

  1. 4. Place Mug & Pod

Place a mug on the drip tray. If using a travel mug, remove the drip tray and place the mug on the drip tray base. Lift the handle and place a K-Cup® pod in the K-Cup® pod holder. Lower the handle completely to close the lid.

Illustrations: Show placing a mug on the drip tray, removing the drip tray for a travel mug, and placing a K-Cup pod into the holder.

Note: Not all reusable coffee filters are compatible with this brewer. Visit support.commercial.keurig.com for more information.

  2. 5. Brew & Enjoy!

Tap the BREW button to brew with the current settings. To customize your brew, tap the current size, strength, or temperature at the top of the screen. Adjust the sliders to customize your brew, tap the check mark to confirm, and then tap the BREW button.

Illustrations: Show the brewer's touch interface for customizing brew settings (size, strength, temperature) and confirming selections.

Note: Brewing is complete when the "Enjoy" screen is displayed. The brewer will be ready to brew another cup in about a minute. For iced beverages, only use a plastic cup. Do not use glass.

Caution: While brewing, there is extremely hot water in the K-Cup® pod holder. To avoid injury, do not lift the handle during the brewing process.

Enjoy your brew!

Caring for Your Brewer

Regular cleaning keeps your brewer running smoothly. Always turn off and unplug your brewer before cleaning. Keurig recommends using a Keurig® Rinse Pod or running a cleansing brew immediately after brewing hot cocoa or other sweetened pods to keep the needles clean.

Caution: Parts are not dishwasher safe.

Brewer Exterior

Clean the exterior with a paper towel and a non-vinegar glass cleaner. Never immerse the brewer in water or other liquids.

Illustration: A hand wipes the exterior of the brewer with a cloth.

Drip Tray

The drip tray holds up to 8 ounces of overflow and should be emptied and cleaned occasionally. Slide it toward you, keeping it level to avoid spilling. Clean with a damp, soapy, lint-free, nonabrasive cloth.

Illustration: The drip tray is slid out and cleaned.

Water Reservoir & Reservoir Lid

Clean the water reservoir lid and reservoir periodically with a damp, soapy, nonabrasive cloth. Rinse the reservoir thoroughly after cleaning to ensure no cleaning solutions remain. Fill with clean water and return to the brewer. Do not dry the inside of the reservoir with a cloth, as lint may remain. The reservoir lid and reservoir should not be put into the dishwasher.

Illustrations: Show the water reservoir and its lid being cleaned.

Note: If using a water filter, remove it before cleaning. The filter cartridge should be replaced regularly per its instructions.

K-Cup® Pod Holder and Needles

K-Cup® Pod Holder

To remove the K-Cup® pod holder, lift the handle and grasp the top. Push up from underneath until it releases. After cleaning, align the holder with the opening using the front ribs as a guide and snap into place from the top.

Diagram: Shows how to remove the K-Cup pod holder by lifting the handle and pushing from underneath.

Caution: Sharp needles puncture the K-Cup® pod. Do not put fingers in the holder.

Note: Remove used K-Cup® pods after brewing or as part of daily cleaning.

Funnel

The funnel can be removed from the K-Cup® pod holder by pulling until it pops off. To replace, orient the snaps to the indent and snap it back on.

Diagram: Shows the funnel being detached from the K-Cup pod holder.

Exit Needle

Remove the pod holder assembly and detach the funnel. Locate the exit needle on the inside bottom. Insert a straightened paper clip into the exit needle to loosen any coffee grounds.

Diagram: Shows a straightened paper clip being inserted into the exit needle.

Entrance Needles

Lift the brewer handle. Locate the entrance needles on the underside of the lid. To clean the holes, hold the handle up and carefully insert a straightened paper clip into all holes. Gently move it around to loosen coffee grounds. Lower the handle completely and run two cleansing brews without a K-Cup® pod.

Diagram: Shows a straightened paper clip being inserted into the entrance needles on the underside of the lid.

Tip: Refer to support.Keurig.com for video instructions on cleaning needles.

Descaling Your Brewer

Descale your brewer every 3-6 months. Do not use a K-Cup® pod during descaling. Calcium deposits or scale can build up, hindering performance. Regular descaling maintains the heating element and internal parts.

Descaling Procedure

You will need a large ceramic mug, fresh water, Keurig® Descaling Solution, and access to a sink. Allow approximately 45 minutes. Empty the water reservoir. Remove any Keurig® Water Filter.

STEP 1: Descaling Solution Rinse

Press the power button to turn the brewer off. Pour the entire bottle of Keurig® Descaling Solution into the emptied water reservoir. Fill the empty bottle with water and pour into the reservoir. Press the power button to turn the brewer back on. Place a large mug on the drip tray and run a rinsing brew using the largest brew size.

STEP 2: Descaling Rinse & Repeat

Repeat the rinsing brew process until you see the "add water" warning. Let the brewer stand for at least 30 minutes while still on. After 30 minutes, discard residual solution and rinse the reservoir thoroughly.

STEP 3: Fresh Water Rinse

Fill the water reservoir with fresh water to the top of the handle. Place a large mug on the drip tray and run a rinsing brew using the largest brew size. Discard the hot water. Repeat this process until you have completed at least 12 rinsing brews. You may need to refill the water reservoir.

Note: The cleaning action of Keurig® Descaling Solution may produce foam, which is natural. For heavily scaled brewers, output may be low initially. If this occurs: turn off/unplug the brewer, discard any solution, rinse the reservoir, refill with water, power on, and repeat Step 3. If the problem persists, allow the brewer to sit unplugged for 30 minutes before continuing.

Troubleshooting

Grounds in Your Coffee

Grounds may have gathered in the exit or entrance needles. Clean them using a straightened paper clip. Refer to the exit needle and entrance needle care instructions.

Excessive Grounds in the K-Cup® Pod Assembly Housing

Do not use already-punctured pods, as this may result in grounds escaping through holes in the lid.

Brewer Will Not Brew

If you see the "add water" warning, add water to the reservoir (fill to the handle line) and ensure the reservoir is seated properly. If the warning persists, contact Customer Service.

Older My K-Cup® reusable coffee filters may not be compatible due to the number of entrance needles. The compatible filter has five holes on its lid.

Helpful Hints

Water quality varies. For undesirable tastes (e.g., chlorine, mineral), use bottled or filtered water. Do not use distilled water. A Keurig® Water Filter can help remove impurities and improve taste.

Regular Maintenance

FrequencyCleaning AreasCleaning Method
DAILYExterior components (e.g., drip tray, water reservoir)Remove and dispose of used pods. Run a hot water rinse brew*. Rinse reservoir and drip tray clean.
WEEKLYPod holder assemblyDetach and rinse clean.
QUARTERLYInterior water path and tankDescale**.

* A rinse brew is running a hot water cycle with no K-Cup® pod. Run a rinse brew immediately after using a pod with hot cocoa or milk ingredients. If the brewer is not used daily, repeat a rinse brew before the first serving.

** If the brewer will be unused or in storage for an extended period (e.g., over a month), a full descale procedure can be conducted before and after storage.

Storage

Empty the water reservoir before storing or transporting. Store your brewer in a safe, frost-free environment in its upright position to avoid water leakage. Storing in a cold environment risks water freezing and causing damage. When preparing to use after storage, rinse the water reservoir with fresh water and run three rinsing brews without a K-Cup® pod.

If moving the brewer, turn it off, unplug it, and empty the water reservoir. If it has been in a sub-freezing environment, let it warm to room temperature for at least 2 hours before use. Conduct a descaling procedure as appropriate.
