Introduction
Thank you for purchasing Bandai's Tamagotchi for your Nintendo Game Boy. This manual provides instructions on how to play and care for your virtual pet.
Precautions
- Take a 10-15 minute break every hour when playing for extended periods.
- This is a precision-built electronic device. Avoid extreme temperatures, rough handling, and shock. Do not disassemble.
- Keep connectors dry and clean to prevent damage to the Game Pak and Game Boy.
- Do not use benzene, alcohol, or other solvents for cleaning.
- Always check the Game Pak edge connector for foreign material before insertion.
- Store the Game Pak in its protective case when not in use.
1. Welcome to the Tamagotchi Laboratory
With the Nintendo Game Boy Tamagotchi game, you can:
- Raise up to three Tamagotchi simultaneously.
- Set the growth rate of your Tamagotchi.
- Experience different care methods compared to the toy version.
- Enter your Tamagotchi in tournaments.
- Enjoy automatic game saving, allowing you to resume your game later.
2. How To Use The Controller
The Game Boy controller functions are as follows:
- Control Pad: Press to move the cursor up, down, or sideways.
- A Button: Press to make a selection.
- B Button: Press to cancel and return to the Main Menu.
- START Button: Press to set modes at the beginning of the game.
- SELECT Button: Press to return from the Laboratory to the Options Menu.
3. Starting The Game
Insert the Tamagotchi cartridge into the Game Boy and turn on the power. After a brief demonstration, the Main Menu will appear. From here, you can choose:
- Continue: Restarts your previously saved game.
- New Game: Starts a new game with a new egg.
- Options:
- Time Speed: Set the Tamagotchi's growth rate to Fast, Medium, or Slow.
- Memory: Check recorded data for your Tamagotchi.
- Exit: Returns you to the Start Menu.
To make a selection, use the Control Pad to move the cursor and press the A Button.
To start a new game, select "New Game" and press the A Button. You will enter the Laboratory and be prompted to "Erase Game". Choose "yes" to proceed. You will then reach the Choose Egg Screen.
On the Choose Egg Screen, you can select "Choose Egg" or "Explain". "Explain" provides detailed information about various game aspects. Selecting "Choose Egg" takes you to the Egg Room, where you can choose one of eight eggs.
After choosing an egg, you must name it. Use the Control Pad to select letters and press the A Button. Names can be one to six letters long. Select "ED" when finished to advance to the Game Screen. Names cannot be changed after the game begins.
You can raise up to three Tamagotchi simultaneously by choosing additional eggs after naming the first one.
4. Taking Care of Your Tamagotchi
The icons at the top and bottom of the Playing Screen are used for Tamagotchi care:
Top Screen Icons:
- Clock (⏰): Displays the current game time.
- Time Range: Changes based on the clock time.
- Call Signal: Appears when a Tamagotchi needs attention.
- Tamagotchi Selector: Allows you to choose which of your up to three Tamagotchi you wish to care for.
Bottom Screen Icons:
- Food (?): Select to choose food for your Tamagotchi.
- Light (?): Press the A Button to turn the light off when your Tamagotchi sleeps, and again to turn it back on.
- Game (?): Play one of three games to improve your Tamagotchi's mood, mental powers, and physical condition.
- Medical Care (?): A skeleton head icon (?) indicates sickness. Provide medicine or an injection to cure your Tamagotchi.
- Toilet (?): Select this icon to flush the toilet when your Tamagotchi needs to go.
- Check Meters (?): View your Tamagotchi's Life (hunger), Fun (mood), IQ (mental power), Body (physical fitness), and Deed (training) meters.
- Training (?): Use this icon to praise or scold your Tamagotchi.
- Laboratory (?): Return to the Laboratory to:
- Get a new egg.
- Receive special instructions from the Professor.
- Enter a Tamagotchi in tournaments.
- Select a Tamagotchi to return to its Home Planet (?).
- End the game.
5. Tamagotchi Games
Access these games via the Game icon (?):
The Smile Game:
Your Tamagotchi looks left or right. Guess the direction it will look next using the Control Pad. Guessing correctly three out of five times improves its Fun Meter (❤️). A full Fun Meter indicates your Tamagotchi is in its best mood.
The Study Game:
Help your Tamagotchi study with three difficulty levels of math questions (A, B, C). Getting two out of three questions correct improves its IQ Meter. A full IQ Meter signifies peak mental health.
The Sports Game:
Help your Tamagotchi catch a ball using the Control Pad (left/right) and the A Button. There are three difficulty levels (A, B, C) with increasing catch requirements. Successful exercise improves the Body Meter. A full Body Meter indicates peak physical health.
6. Checking The Health Meters
The Check Meters icon (?) allows you to view the following:
- Life Meter: Fills up when you feed your Tamagotchi.
- Fun Meter (❤️): Fills up when you play the Smile Game or give treats like ice cream or cake.
- IQ Meter: The bar increases to the right when you play the Study Game.
- Body Meter: The bar improves when you play the Sports Game.
- Deed Meter: Changes based on whether you praise or scold your Tamagotchi.
7. Entering Your Tamagotchi in Tournaments
Return to the Laboratory, select "Explain", then "Tournaments" to enter your Tamagotchi in Race, Beauty, or Knowledge tournaments. Tournaments are available between 12 noon and 6 PM. Be punctual and aware of age limitations. Winning earns a place in the Hall of Fame. Ensure your Tamagotchi is well-fed and healthy before entering competitions, as its condition affects performance.
8. Questions and Answers
- A. If your Tamagotchi calls you:
- Select the Check Meters icon (?). If hungry, feed it. If in a bad mood, play the Smile Game or offer treats.
- B. If your Tamagotchi is spoiled:
- If it calls without reason or is picky about food, give it a good scolding. Praise it when it does something good.
- C. If your Tamagotchi becomes sick:
- Provide care promptly. For a stomach ache, administer medicine. For a cold, give an injection. Avoid excessive treats and remember to flush the toilet.
- D. If your Tamagotchi dies:
- It has returned to its Home Planet (?) to start a new life. Do not be discouraged.
- E. If you want a new Tamagotchi:
- There are eight eggs available. If all are used and the last Tamagotchi has died, the game ends. New eggs may appear during gameplay.
- F. How to save a game:
- A record can be saved for each of your eight Tamagotchi. The Save Screen appears when a Tamagotchi dies or is returned to its Home Planet. Choose "Save" then "Yes". If no space is available, choose "Erase" then "Yes".
- G. If you want to read a record:
- Return to the Main Menu (B Button). Select "Options" then "Memory" to access the Record Screen. To delete data, press the A and SELECT buttons simultaneously on the Record Screen.
9. How to Play with the Super Game Boy
Insert the Tamagotchi Game Pak into the Super Game Boy cassette, then insert the cassette into the Super Game Boy unit. Turn on the power and play. Refer to the Super Game Boy manual for specific settings and functions.
Warranty Information
Bandai America Incorporated ("Bandai") warrants the Game Pak to the original consumer purchaser to be free from defects in material and workmanship for 90 days from the date of purchase. Bandai will repair or replace defective Paks free of charge within this period.
For service, contact the Bandai Consumer Service Department at 1-714-816-9500 (Monday-Friday, 9 AM - 5 PM Pacific Standard Time). If the problem cannot be resolved by phone, you will receive a Return Authorization number. Ship the defective Pak freight prepaid to Bandai America Incorporated, Consumer Service Department, 5551 Katella Avenue, Cypress, CA 90630, with the Return Authorization number on the packaging.
For repairs after the warranty period, contact the Bandai Consumer Service Department. A fee of $10.00 (payable to Bandai America Incorporated) may apply for repairs or replacements. If replacement Paks are unavailable, the defective Pak will be returned with the payment refunded.
Warranty Limitations: Implied warranties are limited to ninety days. Bandai is not liable for consequential or incidental damages. This warranty is valid in the United States only and provides specific legal rights that may vary by state.
