Product Overview
The DEFA 421821 is an oil heater designed to preheat your vehicle's engine oil. This process facilitates easier engine starting in cold conditions, reduces engine wear, and contributes to quicker cabin heating.
General Instructions and Safety Information
Important: DEFA disclaims any liability for damages resulting from modifications, the use of unoriginal parts, or installation not in accordance with these instructions. Claims are handled according to national consumer laws. Please retain your purchase receipt.
Products installed in a vehicle's engine compartment should be fitted by an authorized workshop.
Connection Guidelines:
- Only connect the heater using original DEFA extension cables or the DEFA WarmUp Plugin contact on the inlet cable.
- Power on and off should be controlled via a DEFA WarmUp control unit or manually using the connection cable.
- When connecting the connection cable, always connect the MiniPlug to the car first, followed by the schuko plug to an approved mains socket.
Usage Definitions:
Normal Use: DEFA defines normal use as 3 connections for 3 hours per 24-hour period, based on 150 usage days per year (approximately 5 months per year).
Special Use Cases:
- Emergency Vehicles/Power Supplies: If the engine heater is used in emergency vehicles, power supplies, or similar applications where it is continuously connected or the vehicle is not in use, an annual service check is mandatory. The heater may need replacement if found defective, which is not covered by warranty.
- Pulse-Controlled Garages: Using the engine heater in garages with pulse-controlled power outlets (where the heater is switched on and off multiple times per hour) will significantly reduce its lifespan. Such usage is not recommended and is not covered by the product warranty.
Oil Heater Specifics:
This is an oil heater that preheats the engine oil, not the coolant. Therefore, the temperature increase observed on the engine block may differ from that of a coolant heater.
Maximizing Heating Effect:
- Thoroughly clean the contact surfaces on the oil sump.
- Apply the supplied Heat Sink Compound to the heater's contact surface.
- Ensure the bracket presses the heater firmly against the oil sump for maximum contact.
A contact heater must NOT be mounted on composite materials.

Installation Steps
- Preparation: Remove the engine compartment undertray (if applicable). Thoroughly clean the installation area (1) on the oil sump.
- Bracket Installation: Fasten the bracket (3) to the available threaded hole (2) located above the oil sump. Use the enclosed bolt (4) and lock washer (5). Important: Do not fully tighten the bolt at this stage.
- Heater and Paste Application: Apply the supplied Heat Sink Compound to the heater's contact surface. Fit the heater (6) and adjust the bracket so the lug on the heater fits into the hole on the bracket.
- Securing and Cable Management: Push the heater contact towards the oil sump edge, ensuring approximately 10mm clearance between the beam and the inlet cable (7). Tighten the bolt (4) and confirm the heater is securely fastened. Important: If the bracket does not press firmly against the heater, bend the bracket slightly before retightening the bolt. Secure the armoured cable to a suitable point (e.g., the ACC-compressor's support (7) or a frame member (8)) using cable ties. Ensure the cable does not come into contact with moving parts or hot surfaces.
- Finalization: Remount the engine compartment undertray.
