Balboa BP Series TP400/TP600 Control Panel Manual

A comprehensive guide detailing the features and operation of Balboa Water Group's BP Series TP400 and TP600 spa control panels.

Filtration

The system is factory-programmed with a single filter cycle designed to run in the evening, when energy rates are typically lower. The specific time and duration of this filter cycle are programmable. For detailed instructions on programming, consult the TP400/TP600 User Guide (document number 40940). An optional second filter cycle can be enabled as needed.

Dual Temperature Ranges

This spa system is equipped with two distinct temperature range settings, allowing for independent temperature management. The High Range, clearly indicated on the control panel display, can be configured between 80°F and 104°F. The Low Range, also shown on the display, can be set between 50°F and 99°F. Utilizing the Low Range is often economical during periods when the spa is not in use.

The manufacturer may specify more precise temperature ranges, for example, 50°F to 79°F for the low range, or 90°F to 104°F for the high range.

The control panel display typically shows status information, such as: 102°F READY RANGE FLTR 1.

Ready and Rest Modes

If the spa's filtration pump is a 2-Speed Pump 1, the READY mode will activate. In this mode, the pump circulates water every 30 minutes using Pump 1 Low. This action helps maintain a constant water temperature, provides heating as necessary, and refreshes the temperature display. This periodic check is commonly referred to as "polling."

The REST mode, conversely, permits heating only during the scheduled filter cycles. Because polling does not occur in REST mode, the temperature display might not reflect the current water temperature until the filtration pump has been operational for a minute or two. The mode indicator READY/REST may appear on the display when Jets 1 is activated.

Startup Procedure

Upon initial power-up via the spa's GFCI, the control panel display will show a startup sequence of numbers. If no buttons are pressed during this sequence, the display will eventually show "LINK". Note that on some older spa systems, it may be necessary to press any button to establish the link between the control panel and the spa system.

Following the linking process, the spa will enter Priming Mode. During Priming Mode, press the [Jets Button(s)] to cycle the pumps on and off. This is a crucial step to verify that all air has been purged from the plumbing system, particularly from the heater's plumbing. If the spa is equipped with a circulation pump, the [Light Button] can be used to turn this circulation pump on and off during the priming process.

Priming Mode is designed to conclude automatically after 4 minutes. Alternatively, you can manually exit Priming Mode by pressing any [Temperature Button]. Once Priming Mode has ended, Pump 1 low will initiate operation (provided there is no circulation pump). The water temperature reading may take approximately one minute to appear. When the system successfully recognizes the water temperature, and if it is below the programmed Set Temperature, the heater will commence operation.

Basic Operation

The control panel typically features [Up/Down Buttons], which are commonly known as [Temperature Buttons]. Some panel models may be equipped with only a single [Temperature Button].

Pressing a [Temperature Button] once will cause the current Set Temperature to flash on the LCD screen. It's important to note that the Set Temperature and the actual water temperature may differ. While the numbers are flashing, pressing a [Temperature Button] again allows you to adjust the Set Temperature. For a quicker adjustment, press and hold the button.

After the new Set Temperature stops flashing (which typically occurs within about 10 seconds), the actual water temperature will be displayed again, confirming that the new Set Temperature has been programmed. The spa will then automatically heat the water to meet this new Set Temperature as needed.

The [Light Button] serves the dual purpose of turning the spa light on and off, and it is also used in conjunction with the [Temperature Button(s)] to navigate through the various system menus.

Programming

For comprehensive details regarding operation, programming options, and understanding system messages, please refer to the TP400/TP600 User Guide (document number 40940).

Navigation through the deeper menu structure is accomplished using either two or three buttons on the control panel. To access the menus, press the [Light Button] while the set temperatures are flashing. Subsequent presses of the [Light Button] will advance through the available menu options. When a specific menu item is displayed, pressing a [Temperature Button] will either allow direct editing of that item or initiate an editing sequence.

Depending on the specific screen being displayed, waiting for a period of 10 to 30 seconds will typically allow the panel to revert to its normal operation mode, displaying the current spa status.
