Introduction
This document provides a quick start guide for the Behringer NEKKST series studio monitors (K8, K6, K5) and the K10S studio subwoofer.
NEKKST K8/K6/K5 Studio Monitors
Audiophile Bi-Amped 8", 6", and 5" Studio Monitors with Advanced Waveguide Technology.
NEKKST K10S Studio Subwoofer
Audiophile 10" Studio Subwoofer with High Excursion Woofer.
Step 1: Hook-Up
This section outlines the basic connections required to set up your NEKKST system.
General Placement Advice:
- Place the monitor speakers at head level, unobstructed, and at equal distances to the left and right of your listening position to form an equilateral triangle.
- For the K10S subwoofer, experiment with its position, such as in corners or near walls, to find the best bass response.
Connection Steps:
- Connect the included power cables to each monitor and the subwoofer. Plug the other ends into a mains outlet properly configured for your models. Ensure all equipment is connected to the same outlet if possible to avoid ground loops. DO NOT turn the power on yet.
- Connect your audio source(s) to the inputs of the monitors and subwoofer.
- For mixers, balanced outputs are preferable.
- Audio outputs from a computer can be connected using an interface (e.g., FCA1616).
- Refer to the hook-up diagrams for specific connection ideas using various audio sources like guitars, keyboards, and drum machines.
- Turn on your audio source (mixer, computer, etc.) with the volume set to minimum.
- Turn on the power to each monitor and the subwoofer using their rear panel power switches.
Step 2: Controls
Familiarize yourself with the controls on your NEKKST monitors and subwoofer.
NEKKST K5/K6/K8 Monitor Controls:
- HIGH FREQUENCY: Compensates for room acoustic absorption.
- LOW FREQUENCY: Adapts the monitor for use with a subwoofer or emulates smaller speaker characteristics.
- ROOM COMPENSATION: Provides low-frequency roll-off to compensate for monitor placement (e.g., near walls).
- INPUT TRIM: Adjusts the monitor's input sensitivity to the audio source signal.
- INPUT: Connect audio sources via XLR, RCA, or 1/4" cables.
- POWER SWITCH: Turns the unit on and off. The Behringer logo lights up when powered on.
- POWER SOURCE: Connect the included power cable here and to a mains outlet.
NEKKST K10S Subwoofer Controls:
- LEVEL: Adjusts the subwoofer's input sensitivity to the audio source signal.
- CROSSOVER: Adjusts the crossover frequency to match the K5, K6, or K8 monitors or other system speakers.
- PHASE: Reverses the output phase to compensate for frequency cancellation between the subwoofer and monitors.
- LINE IN (RCA): Connect unbalanced RCA cables for audio sources. The subwoofer sums left and right inputs to mono.
- LINE OUT (RCA): Sends full-range copies of the unbalanced RCA input signal.
- BALANCED INPUTS (XLR): Connect audio sources via XLR cables. The subwoofer sums left and right inputs to mono.
- BALANCED OUTPUTS (XLR): Send full-range copies of the balanced XLR input signal.
Step 3: Getting Started
Follow these steps to set up and achieve optimal sound:
- Position the monitor speakers as described in Step 1 (head level, equal distance).
- Position the K10S subwoofer, experimenting with placement for best bass.
- Connect all audio sources and power cables as per Step 1. Ensure power is off.
- Turn on the audio source (mixer/computer) with volume at minimum.
- Turn on the monitors and subwoofer.
- Set the INPUT TRIM on each monitor to the center (0 dB) position.
- Set the K10S subwoofer's LEVEL knob to the center (0 dB) position. Adjust the CROSSOVER knob to match your monitors.
- Start playing your audio source and slowly increase the volume to a comfortable listening level.
- Adjust the monitor's INPUT TRIM and the subwoofer's LEVEL knobs as needed to achieve a good overall balance.
