8. Customer Care & Warranty
8.1 Philips' Flat Panel Monitors Pixel Defect Policy
Philips strives for high-quality products with advanced manufacturing and quality control. However, pixel or sub-pixel defects on TFT panels are sometimes unavoidable. Philips guarantees repair or replacement under warranty for monitors with an unacceptable number of defects. This policy defines different types of pixel defects and acceptable levels.
A pixel is composed of three sub-pixels (red, green, blue). When all sub-pixels are lit, it appears as a white pixel; when dark, a black pixel. Other combinations create other colors.
Types of Pixel Defects
Pixel and sub-pixel defects appear in different ways, categorized into two main types:
Bright Dot Defects
These are pixels or sub-pixels that are always lit ('on'). They stand out on dark backgrounds. Types include:
- One lit red, green, or blue sub-pixel.
- Two adjacent lit sub-pixels (e.g., Red + Blue = Purple).
- Three adjacent lit sub-pixels (one white pixel).
? Note: A red or blue bright dot must be >50% brighter than neighboring dots; a green bright dot must be >30% brighter.
Black Dot Defects
These are pixels or sub-pixels that are always dark ('off'). They stand out on light backgrounds. Types include:
- One dark sub-pixel.
- Two adjacent dark sub-pixels.
- Three adjacent dark sub-pixels.
Proximity of Pixel Defects
Tolerances are specified for the proximity of defects of the same type, as they can be more noticeable when close together.
Pixel Defect Tolerances
To qualify for warranty repair or replacement, pixel or sub-pixel defects must exceed the following tolerances:
Defect Type | Acceptable Level |
---|---|
BRIGHT DOT DEFECTS | |
1 lit subpixel | 2 |
2 adjacent lit subpixels | 1 |
3 adjacent lit subpixels (one white pixel) | 0 |
Distance between two bright dot defects* | >15mm |
Total bright dot defects of all types | 2 |
BLACK DOT DEFECTS | |
1 dark subpixel | 3 or fewer |
2 adjacent dark subpixels | 2 or fewer |
3 adjacent dark subpixels | 0 |
Distance between two black dot defects* | >15mm |
Total black dot defects of all types | 3 or fewer |
TOTAL DOT DEFECTS | |
Total bright or black dot defects of all types | 5 or fewer |
? Note: 1 or 2 adjacent sub-pixel defects = 1 dot defect.
