IKEA Kitchen Knives Warranty Information
This document outlines the warranty details for IKEA kitchen knives, ensuring customers understand the coverage and how to maintain their products.
Product Usage and Durability
IKEA kitchen knives are designed for daily use, built with quality to withstand everyday demands. IKEA guarantees that these knives will maintain their function for 15 years, provided that maintenance instructions are followed and the knives are used for normal domestic purposes, such as cutting food, washed once daily, and regularly sharpened.
This commercial warranty for function, material, and manufacturing is subject to the terms and conditions outlined in this document.
Warranty Duration and Coverage
The IKEA kitchen knife warranty is valid for fifteen (15) years from the date of purchase from IKEA, or from the date of delivery if different. This warranty applies to purchases made on or after September 1, 2024. An original invoice is required for warranty claims.
If a product is replaced under warranty, the warranty period will not be reset or extended; it will continue from the original purchase date.
The warranty is valid exclusively in Portugal. Replacements or exchanges for items purchased in other countries are not offered.
What this warranty covers:
- Sharpness: Knives are guaranteed to be sharp at the time of purchase and should be regularly sharpened to maintain optimal performance. The blade is made of hardened stainless steel, allowing for sharpening throughout the warranty period.
- Durable Handle: Handles, including wooden ones, should not crack, break, or detach from the blade. If this occurs, the knife is no longer usable.
- Blade Corrosion: The warranty covers the absence of corrosion on the blade.
This commercial warranty does not affect the rights granted by Decree-Law no. 84/2021, of October 18, concerning the conformity of goods, price reduction, or contract termination.
Products Not Covered by Warranty
The following IKEA products are not covered by this warranty: FÖRDUBBLA, HACKIG, UPPFYLLD, SKALAD, and SMÅBIT knives, as well as cutlery knives, steak knives, and knife sharpeners.
Warranty Claims and Resolution
IKEA Portugal will examine the product to determine if the reported defect is covered by the warranty. The consumer must prove the lack of conformity according to the warranty terms. IKEA Portugal reserves the right to repair or replace the item with an alternative of equal or lesser value, even if it has similar characteristics. If a customer requests a replacement of a higher value range, they will need to pay the difference. IKEA Portugal does not guarantee replacement within the same range, as ranges may be discontinued. Replacements may be of a different range or the same range with different aesthetic characteristics (e.g., color). IKEA Portugal will determine what constitutes an adequate replacement based on proportionality and suitability criteria. In such cases, IKEA Portugal will not cover costs for disassembly, transport, and assembly; these will be borne by the customer. If IKEA Portugal opts for repair, it will cover the costs of repairs, spare parts, labor, and necessary travel, provided the product is in an accessible location and the repair does not incur additional costs. This does not apply to unauthorized repair work. Replaced parts and components become the property of IKEA Portugal. IKEA Portugal may opt to terminate the contract if the repair or replacement is excessively costly.
What is Not Covered by this Warranty
This warranty does not cover non-domestic use. It does not cover changes in the knife's appearance unless they significantly impair its function. It also does not cover items stored incorrectly, used negligently or intentionally damaged, misused, altered, or cleaned with improper methods or products. Normal wear and tear, cuts or scratches, or damage from impacts or accidents are not covered. The warranty does not apply if products have been placed outdoors or in humid environments. Accidental or indirect damages are not covered.
The consumer is responsible for proving the lack of conformity as per the warranty terms.
Maintenance Instructions
Before First Use:
- Wash, rinse, and dry the knife before the first use.
Cleaning:
- Hand washing blades is preferred. While dishwashers are unlikely to damage the knife, the tip may be damaged, and the blade may rust.
- Wash and dry the knife immediately after use to prevent bacterial growth from food residues.
- Dry the knife immediately after washing to prevent stains on the blade.
Sharpening:
- A sharp knife is safer than a dull one. Sharpen knives regularly. IKEA kitchen knives have stainless steel blades that are easy to sharpen. Sharpening once a week is recommended for domestic use.
- Use a sharpener made of a material harder than the blade's steel, such as ceramic, diamond, or whetstone. Never use a stainless steel sharpener.
- If a knife becomes very dull due to prolonged use or lack of care, professional sharpening may be required.
Storage and Use:
- Avoid cutting frozen or very hard foods (e.g., bones), as this can warp or fragment the blade. If cutting hard foods, move the knife forward and backward through the food, avoiding lateral oscillation.
- Always use a wooden or plastic cutting board. Never cut on glass, metal, or ceramic surfaces.
- Store knives in a knife block or on a magnetic wall holder to protect the edge and prolong their lifespan.
Care for Wooden Handles:
- To protect wooden handles and enhance their natural resistance to humidity, treat them with an approved food-contact oil, such as vegetable oil. Apply oil once, remove excess, and repeat after 24 hours. Repeat as needed.
- Do not let wooden handles come into prolonged contact with water, immerse them, or leave them damp.
In addition to the above recommendations, all maintenance and cleaning instructions provided in the manual and on product labels must be followed.
