Introduction

This guide provides essential information for setting up and using your FortiFone FON-780B IP phone. It covers installation, configuration, basic operations, and troubleshooting.

Installation

Attaching the Stand

To attach the stand:

  1. Align the posts of the stand base with the corresponding holes on the back of the phone.
  2. Push the stand firmly into place until it is secure.

The phone's screen angle can be adjusted by gently pulling it forward or pushing it back to your desired position.

Connecting the Phone

The phone features several ports on its rear panel:

Connection steps:

  1. Connect the handset cord to the handset jack on the phone.
  2. Optionally, connect an amplified headset to the headset jack [headset-icon].
  3. Connect the WAN port [ethernet-icon] to your network using the provided Ethernet cable.
  4. Optionally, connect your desktop PC to the PC port [pc-icon] using an Ethernet cable (not supplied).
  5. If your network supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), a power adapter is not required. If PoE is not supported, connect the DC 12V 1.5A power adapter to the power jack [power-dc-icon].

Setting Up the Phone

The phone can be configured for three types of extensions:

For use as an internal extension

If the phone and FortiVoice phone system are on the same network, the phone supports plug-and-play installation. It automatically downloads its configuration from the FortiVoice system and displays the extension number and name upon registration.

For use as an external extension

If the phone and FortiVoice phone system are on different networks, manual configuration is required. Follow these steps:

  1. On the phone, press the Menu button [menu-icon].
  2. Select Setting > Provisioning.
  3. Enter the password 23646 and press OK.
  4. In the FortiVoice Server field, enter the public IP address or FQDN of the FortiVoice unit and press OK.
  5. In the Server Port field, enter the port for the FortiVoice Server (default is 443) and press OK.

For use as a cloud extension

To use the phone with the FortiVoice Cloud service:

  1. On the phone, press the Menu button [menu-icon].
  2. Select Cloud.
  3. Enter the Cloud ID.
  4. Enter the Extension No..
  5. Enter the Cloud PIN and press OK.

Using the Phone

The FortiFone FON-780B features a touch screen, navigation keys, and a dialpad.

Troubleshooting

If using Power over Ethernet (PoE):
  • Ensure your Ethernet cable is plugged into the WAN port on the back of your phone.
  • Ensure the PoE switch is properly configured. If issues persist, replace the Ethernet cable.
If using the power adapter:
  • Ensure it is plugged in. If issues persist, replace the power adapter.
Phone is not receiving a DHCP IP addressThe DHCP server may not be responding.
  1. Ensure your DHCP server (typically your router) is online.
  2. Reboot the router or DHCP server.
  3. If issues persist, advanced network configuration may be required. Contact your administrator.
No name and extension number is displayedYour phone may not be registered.
  1. On the FortiVoice interface's Extensions page, verify the MAC address is correctly entered and the Phone Type is set to FON-780. Save configuration and reboot the phone.
  2. If configured as an external extension, ensure the Server Address is correct. Refer to the "For use as an external extension" section.
  3. If configured as an external extension, check network connection and firewall settings at the FortiVoice location.
No audio during a call
  1. Check handset/headset connections.
  2. Ensure the phone is properly registered with the FortiVoice unit.
  3. If configured as an external extension, check network connection and firewall settings at the FortiVoice location.
