HOW TO USE THE HYBRID TRAINER

HOW TO MOVE THE HYBRID TRAINER

Moving the hybrid trainer requires two persons due to its size and weight. Stand in front, hold the upright, and place one foot against a wheel. Pull the upright while a second person lifts the rear stabilizer to allow the trainer to roll on its wheels. Move it to the desired location and lower it to the floor.

Diagram shows a person holding the upright and placing a foot near the wheel, with an arrow indicating to lift the rear.

HOW TO ADJUST THE PEDAL POSITION

Each pedal can be adjusted to several positions. To adjust, loosen the pedal knob, move the pedal forward or backward to the desired position, and then retighten the pedal knob.

Diagram shows a close-up of a pedal with a knob, indicating adjustment.

HOW TO USE THE ELLIPTICAL MODE

To use as an elliptical, pivot the upright to the high position, then tighten the console knob and washer into the upright.

Diagram shows the upright pivoted high, with a knob and washer being tightened.

ELLIPTICAL MODE MOUNTING AND OPERATION

To mount in elliptical mode, hold the handlebars or upper body arms and step onto the lower pedal, then the other pedal. Then, lift a pedal, fold the brace upward, and pivot the pedal to the low position. Repeat for the other pedal. To dismount, wait for pedals to stop. Note: The trainer has no freewheel; pedals continue moving until the flywheel stops. Step off the higher pedal first, then the lower pedal.

Diagrams illustrate pedal movement, brace folding, and dismounting.

HOW TO USE THE RECUMBENT BIKE MODE

To use as a recumbent bike, remove the console knob and washer, then pivot the upright to the low position. Lift a pedal, unfold the brace, set it in the pedal carriage, and pivot the pedal to the high position. Ensure the brace is securely inserted. Repeat for the other pedal.

Diagrams show the upright pivoted low and the pedal brace being set.

PEDAL OPERATION

Push the pedals until they move with continuous motion. The crank arms can turn in either direction. It is recommended to move them in the direction of the arrow, but for variety, you can turn them in the opposite direction.

Diagrams show the trainer's pedals, crank arm, and handlebars, with an arrow indicating recommended pedal direction.

CONSOLE DIAGRAM

Diagram shows the ProForm console with various buttons and displays labeled: SCAN, TIME DIST., RPM, CALS. PULSE SPEED RPM/TARGET, ON/RESET, DISPLAY, SMART WORKOUT APPS, RECUMBENT, ELLIPTICAL, RESISTANCE increase/decrease buttons.

FEATURES OF THE CONSOLE

The console offers features to make workouts more effective. In manual mode, resistance can be changed with a button press, providing continuous feedback. The handgrip heart rate monitor can measure heart rate. The console also offers fourteen smart workouts (seven for recumbent bike mode, seven for elliptical mode) that automatically adjust resistance and prompt pedaling pace variations.

Before use, ensure batteries are installed (see assembly step 15 on page 13). Remove any protective plastic from the display.

HOW TO USE THE MANUAL MODE

  1. Turn on the console: Press the On/Reset button or begin pedaling. The display will briefly show all segments, then be ready for use.
  2. Select the manual mode: Manual mode is selected by default. If a workout was previously selected, press Smart Workouts Apps buttons repeatedly until zeros appear to return to manual mode.
  3. Change the resistance: As you pedal, press the Resistance increase or decrease buttons. Note: It takes a moment for the pedals to reach the selected resistance level.
  4. Follow your progress: The display shows Speed (revolutions per minute, rpm), Time (elapsed or remaining for workouts), Distance (total revolutions), and Calories (approximate burned).

CONSOLE DISPLAY MODES

Pulse: Shows heart rate when using the handgrip heart rate monitor.

Scan: Alternately displays time and distance in the upper section, and calories in the lower left. An indicator appears below the word SCAN when selected. As you exercise, the upper section shows elapsed time and distance alternately, while the lower left shows calories and the lower right shows pedaling speed (rpm). Bars in the RPM meter indicate speed.

To cancel scan mode, press the Display button. The SCAN indicator disappears, and the upper display shows only elapsed time. Pressing Display again shows only distance. Pressing repeatedly cycles back to scan mode.

To reset the display, press On/Reset. To pause, stop pedaling; the time will flash. Resume pedaling to continue.

MEASURE YOUR HEART RATE

Note: Remove any plastic sheets from the handgrip heart rate monitor contacts. To measure heart rate, hold the handgrip monitor with palms resting against the contacts. Avoid moving hands or gripping too tightly.

When pulse is detected, a heart-shaped indicator flashes with each beat, followed by two dashes, then your heart rate appears. For best results, hold contacts for about 15 seconds. The display may show heart rate for up to 30 seconds. If heart rate is not shown, ensure proper hand placement and avoid excessive movement or squeezing. Clean contacts with a soft cloth; do not use alcohol, abrasives, or chemicals.

END OF EXERCISE

The console turns off automatically when you finish exercising. If pedals do not move for a few seconds, the time flashes, and the console pauses. If pedals do not move for a few minutes, the console turns off and the display resets.

HOW TO USE A SMART WORKOUT

  1. Turn on the console: Press the On/Reset button or begin pedaling.
  2. Select a smart workout: For Recumbent workouts, adjust the trainer to recumbent bike mode. For Elliptical workouts, adjust to elliptical mode. Press the desired Smart Workout Apps button repeatedly; the workout name appears, followed by its duration.
  3. Begin pedaling to start: Workouts have one-minute segments with programmed resistance and target speed (rpm). Resistance level flashes before changing automatically. Manual override is possible using Resistance buttons. IMPORTANT: At the end of a segment, resistance adjusts automatically for the next.
  4. Follow progress: The target meter shows target speed settings, and the RPM meter shows actual pedaling speed. Adjust pedaling speed to match the target meter bars. Arrows prompt speed adjustments if you are too slow or too fast. IMPORTANT: Target speeds are goals; actual speed may be slower initially. Pedal at a comfortable pace. The display shows remaining workout time. Pausing occurs if pedaling stops for a few seconds; resume pedaling to continue.
  5. Measure your heart rate: See step 5 on page 19.
  6. End of exercise: The console turns off automatically. See step 6 on page 19.

EXERCISE GUIDELINES

WARNING: Before beginning any exercise program, consult your physician. This is especially important for persons over age 35 or persons with pre-existing health problems.

The heart rate monitor is an exercise aid, not a medical device. Factors may affect accuracy; it helps determine heart rate trends.

These guidelines help plan your exercise program. For detailed information, consult a reputable book or your physician. Proper nutrition and adequate rest are essential for successful results.

EXERCISE INTENSITY

To burn fat or strengthen your cardiovascular system, exercising at the proper intensity is key. Use your heart rate as a guide. The chart below shows recommended heart rates for fat burning and aerobic exercise.

Heart Rate Chart (Beats Per Minute):

Age (approx.) Fat Burning (Low) Max Fat Burning (Mid) Aerobic (High)
20 115 125 165
30 110 120 155
40 105 115 145
50 100 110 140
60 95 105 130
70 90 100 125
80 85 95 115

Find your age at the bottom (rounded to the nearest ten years). The three numbers above your age define your “training zone”: lowest for fat burning, middle for maximum fat burning, highest for aerobic exercise.

Burning Fat: Exercise at low intensity for sustained periods. Your body uses carbohydrate calories first, then stored fat. Adjust intensity to be near the lowest number in your training zone for fat burning, or the middle number for maximum fat burning.

Aerobic Exercise: Strengthens the cardiovascular system through sustained activity requiring high oxygen intake. Adjust intensity to be near the highest number in your training zone.

WORKOUT GUIDELINES

Warming Up: 5-10 minutes of stretching and light exercise to increase body temperature, heart rate, and circulation.

Training Zone Exercise: 20-30 minutes with heart rate in your training zone. (Limit to 20 minutes in the first few weeks). Breathe regularly and deeply; never hold your breath.

Cooling Down: 5-10 minutes of stretching to increase flexibility and prevent post-exercise problems.

EXERCISE FREQUENCY

Complete three workouts weekly with at least one rest day between. After a few months, up to five workouts weekly may be suitable. Make exercise a regular, enjoyable part of your daily life.
