First Steps
- Attaching the strap: Follow the provided steps to attach the camera strap.
- Inserting the battery and memory card: Ensure the camera is off. Insert the EN-EL25a battery until the latch clicks. Insert the memory card in the orientation shown until it clicks.
- Charging the battery: Charge the EN-EL25a battery before first use. Connect the camera to an optional EH-8P AC adapter using the supplied USB cable. The charge lamp indicates charging status. The battery charges when the camera is off. A full charge takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. Third-party USB PD compliant AC adapters (15W or more) can also be used.
- Attaching a lens: Remove the camera body cap and rear lens cap. Align the mounting marks on the camera and lens. Rotate the lens until it clicks. Remove the front lens cap before shooting.
- Opening the monitor: Slowly rotate the monitor without excessive force.
Camera Setup
Set up your camera by choosing a language and setting the clock:
- Press the MENU button (G), navigate to the setup menu, and select [Language].
- Choose your preferred language.
- Select [Time zone and date].
- Choose your time zone.
- Enable or disable [Daylight saving time].
- Set the clock using the multi selector and press J.
- Select a [Date format].
- Exit the menus by lightly pressing the shutter-release button halfway.
Taking Photographs Easily (b auto)
- Set the photo/video selector to C (photo mode).
- Rotate the mode dial to AUTO (b).
- Frame your photograph.
- Press the shutter-release button halfway to focus.
- Press the shutter-release button fully to take the picture.
Note on retractable lenses: Extend lenses with retractable barrels by rotating the zoom ring until they click into place before use.
Recording Videos Easily (b auto)
- Set the photo/video selector to 1 (video mode).
- Rotate the mode dial to AUTO (b).
- Press the video-record button to start recording. The REC lamp will illuminate, and a recording indicator will appear on the display.
- Press the video-record button again to stop recording.
Playback
Press the K button to review photos and videos. Use the multi selector (4 or 2) or swipe on the monitor to navigate between images. Videos are indicated by a 1 icon. Press J or tap the a icon to play videos. Press the shutter-release button halfway to return to shooting mode.
Caring for the Camera
- Long-term storage: Remove the battery if the camera will not be used for an extended period. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from strong electromagnetic fields and extreme temperatures.
- Cleaning: Use a blower for dust and lint, and a soft, dry cloth for general cleaning. For beach use, wipe with a cloth lightly dampened in fresh water and dry thoroughly. Clean lens and viewfinder elements with a blower and lens cleaner if necessary. Avoid touching the image sensor. Keep lens contacts clean.
- Monitor/Viewfinder: Handle with care to avoid damage. Clean with a blower or a soft cloth. Be cautious of broken glass if the monitor breaks. Avoid contact with liquid crystal.
- Disposing of data storage devices: Ensure data is securely erased before discarding or transferring ownership of memory cards or other storage devices.
Troubleshooting
