Installation Steps
1. Check dimensions
Ensure the door's backset is either 2-3/8" (60 mm) or 2-3/4" (70 mm). Verify the door thickness is between 1-3/8" and 1-3/4" (35 mm - 44 mm). Check the door edge for a 1" (25 mm) or 1-1/2" (38 mm) hole for the latch. For doors with 1-1/2" (38 mm) holes, additional preparation may be required. Service kits for 2-1/4" (57 mm) thick doors are available from Kwikset.
Diagram shows measurements for backset, door thickness, and latch hole diameter.2. Extend latch bolt
Extend the latch bolt to its fully extended position.
Diagram shows the latch bolt being extended.3. Adjust the backset of latch (if needed)
Hold the latch in front of the door hole with the latch face flush against the door edge. If the latch holes are centered in the door hole, no adjustment is required. If not centered, adjust the latch by rotating it 180 degrees.
Diagram illustrates checking latch centering and rotating the latch mechanism.4. Install Latch
Insert the latch into the door edge. Use the provided screws (C) to secure it. If the door edge is chiseled, use the latch plate (A2).
Diagram shows installing the latch into the door edge, with options for chiseled and non-chiseled edges.5. Prepare exterior keypad
Align the exterior keypad assembly with the door hole. This step shows alignment for doors with 2-1/8" (54 mm) holes and 1-1/2" (38 mm) holes.
Diagrams show aligning the exterior keypad for different door hole sizes.6. Install keypad and mounting plate
Attach the mounting plate (E) to the interior side of the door using screws (R). Ensure the cable (K) is routed underneath the latch and connects to the interior assembly. Keep the cable parallel to the door edge. Tighten screws evenly.
Diagrams show mounting plate installation, cable routing, and screw tightening.7. Disassemble interior assembly
Remove the interior assembly (B) from the door. Do not install batteries yet. Ensure the turnpiece is in the vertical position.
Diagram shows the interior assembly and its components.8. Install interior assembly
Connect the cable (K) to the interior assembly (B). Ensure a tight cable connection. Lay the cable flat against the interior housing.
Diagrams show connecting the cable and positioning it within the interior assembly.9. Perform door handing procedure
This step teaches the lock the door's orientation, crucial for operation. Install the battery pack (L) while pressing and holding the Lock button. Continue holding until the latch bolt starts moving on its own. If the latch bolt retracts and extends successfully, the process is complete. If not, remove the battery pack, wait 15 seconds, and try again. Ensure correct battery polarity and use new alkaline batteries.
Diagrams illustrate the door handing process: installing batteries while holding the lock button, checking latch bolt movement, and the YES/NO outcomes.10. Install strike
Install the strike plate (D) onto the door frame using screws (P).
Diagram shows installing the strike plate on the door frame.11. Program the lock
Programming instructions are located on the reverse side of this document.
12. Install the battery cover and re-key the lock
Install the battery cover (M) using screws (Q). If needed, re-key the lock to work with your existing key using the supplied SmartKey Re-key instructions. Keep the SmartKey tool (S) in a safe place for future programming access.
Diagrams show installing the battery cover, using the SmartKey tool, and re-keying the lock.Door Template
If your door requires drilling, cut out the provided template and place it on the exterior side of the door. Complete door drilling instructions are available on the SmartCode deadbolt page at www.kwikset.com.

Programming Codes
It is recommended to manage codes via your Z-Wave or ZigBee control system. If not possible, follow these instructions.
User Codes Requirements: 4-8 digits, unique. Up to 30 user codes can be programmed.
Programming Behavior: A 5-second timeout occurs if no button is pressed. Successful programming is indicated by a green flash and one beep (if audio is on). Unsuccessful programming shows a red flash and three beeps.
Mastercode: An optional security measure (4-8 digits) used for adding/deleting user codes. It does not unlock the door unless also programmed as a user code.
Enabling and Setting the Mastercode
- Press and HOLD the Program button until the keypad flashes green (approx. 5 seconds).
- Enter the new mastercode.
- Press the Lock button once.
- Re-enter the mastercode.
- Press the Lock button once.
If unsuccessful, ensure the mastercode isn't already programmed and re-enter it correctly.
Disabling the Mastercode
- Press and HOLD the Program button until the keypad flashes green (approx. 5 seconds).
- Press the Lock button once.
- Enter the mastercode.
- Press the Lock button once.
- Re-enter the mastercode.
- Press the Lock button once.
To confirm disabling, press the Program button once; if no beeps occur (with Switch #3 on), it's disabled.
Adding User Codes
With Mastercode: Perform steps 1-6.
Without Mastercode: Perform steps 4-6.
- Press the Program button once. (Keypad flashes green, three beeps indicate mastercode is enabled).
- Enter the MASTERCODE.
- Press the Lock button once.
- Press the Program button the number of times corresponding to the user code position (e.g., three times for the third code).
- Enter the new USER code (4-8 digits).
- Press the Lock button once.
Test the user code to ensure it unlocks the door. If unsuccessful, verify the code is not a duplicate and meets digit requirements.
Deleting User Codes
To delete a user code, override it by adding a different user code in the same position. Test the old code to ensure it's inactive. If code positions are unknown, perform a factory reset.
How the Keypad Works
Each button represents two numbers. Press the button once for either number. Example: For code 1-2-5-6-8, press the buttons corresponding to 1, 2, 5, 6, and 8.
