1. Prepare the Door and Check Dimensions
Ensure the door is prepared according to the following measurements:
- Door Hole Diameter: Measure to confirm the hole in the door is 2-1/8" (54 mm).
- Backset: Measure to confirm the backset is either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60 or 70 mm).
- Door Edge Hole: Measure to confirm the hole in the door edge is 1" (25 mm).
- Door Thickness: Measure to confirm the door is between 1-3/8" and 1-3/4" (35 mm and 44 mm) thick.
Note on Hole Spacing: If installing this lever below an existing lock or planning to install a lock above it, ensure the distance between holes is at least 6-1/2" (165 mm).
Install the strike on the door frame.
2. Install the Latch and Strike
Install the latch into the door edge. Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge.
- Chiseled Door Edge: If the door edge is chiseled, use a flathead screwdriver to lift tabs on the collar of the rectangular face to remove it from the latch. Then, install the drive-in collar.
- Non-Chiseled Door Edge: Install the latch in the door with the supplied screws.
- Latch Hole Centering: If the latch holes are not centered in the door hole, adjust the latch by moving the pin to extend the latch bolt.
Install the latch in the door using a wood block and hammer if necessary.
Install the strike on the door frame.
3. Install the Exterior Keypad, Spindle, and Interior Assembly
- Install the exterior keypad onto the door.
- Route the cable from the exterior assembly under the latch mechanism.
- Connect the cable to the interior assembly and secure it by routing the cable through the provided clips. Ensure a tight cable connection.
- Install the spindle through the latch mechanism.
- Optional: Install the security set screw. This locks the interior cover, preventing easy access to the battery and Program button.
- Install the interior assembly. While holding the exterior assembly in place, insert the spindle fully into the interior assembly.
- Secure the interior assembly with the mounting screws (Q). Ensure both interior and exterior assemblies are parallel to the door edge before tightening. Do not use power tools. Tighten screws evenly and do not overtighten.
4. Install Levers
- Install the exterior lever onto the spindle.
- Insert the key and turn it 90° clockwise.
- Tighten the pre-installed set screw to secure the exterior lever.
- Turn the key back to the vertical position to remove it.
- Install and secure the interior lever. Ensure the lever handle faces away from the latch and the hole on the lever faces down. Tighten the pre-installed set screw.
5. Test Latch Operation
Close the door and test the latch operation. Make adjustments as needed:
- The small bolt of the latch should not enter the strike hole when the door is closed. If it does, reposition the strike.
- If the latch is loose in the strike, adjust the strike tab so it grips the latch bolt better when the door is closed.
6. Install Battery
- Remove the interior cover. If the security screw was installed in step 3C, it must be removed first to access the battery compartment.
- Connect the 9V battery.
- Secure the battery into the interior assembly.
7. Add User Codes
Important: Move swiftly during programming. The system times out after 10 seconds of inactivity.
- Make sure the door is open.
- Press and release the Program button. You will hear two beeps.
- Press 1. You will hear one short beep and the keypad will flash green once.
- Press the Kwikset button.
- Enter a User Code (must be between 4 and 8 digits). For security, the first 4 digits of each user code must be unique (e.g., you cannot program 1-2-3-4-5 and 1-2-3-4-6).
- Press the Kwikset button.
- If successful, you will hear one long beep and the keypad will flash green. If unsuccessful (three beeps and red flash), repeat from step A.
8. Optional: Enable / Disable Programming Code
A Programming Code allows programming from the outside without access to the interior Program button. If enabled, the Program button is disabled for normal programming and can only be used for factory reset.
- Make sure the door is open.
- If a Programming Code is NOT enabled: Press and release the Program button (you will hear two beeps).
- If a Programming Code IS enabled: Enter your Programming Code, then press the Kwikset button (you will hear one short beep and the keypad will flash green).
- Press 3. You will hear one short beep and the keypad will flash green.
- Press the Kwikset button.
- Enter a Programming Code (must be between 4 and 8 digits). The Programming Code cannot be the same as any user code.
- Press the Kwikset button.
- Re-enter the Programming Code.
- Press the Kwikset button.
- If successful, you will hear one long beep and the keypad will flash green. If unsuccessful (three beeps and red flash), repeat from step A.
- Reinstall the battery cover.
9. Test the Lock and Review Lock Functionality
Unlocking the Door with a User Code
With the door open and turnpiece set to the auto-lock position, confirm that programmed user codes can unlock the door. Enter the user code, then press the Kwikset button. The lock will beep twice to indicate it unlocked.
Tip: You can press the Kwikset button before entering your user code to light up the keypad at night.
Unlocking the Door with a Key
To unlock using a key, turn the key clockwise to the horizontal position, then turn the lever to open the door. To remove the key, turn it back to the vertical position.
Turnpiece Functions - Choosing a Mode
- Auto-lock mode: The lock will beep once when the turnpiece is turned to the vertical position. A key or code is required for entry from the outside.
- Passage mode: The lock stays unlocked, allowing entry without a key or code. The lock will beep twice when the turnpiece is turned to the horizontal position.
Emergency Egress
The interior lever of this lock will always open the door when turned, regardless of whether it is locked or unlocked. This is to allow for a safe and easy exit in case of emergency.
Re-key the Lock (if needed)
IMPORTANT: Remove the lever before re-keying. Follow the supplied SmartKey™ Re-key instructions for more information on re-keying the lock to work with your existing key.

Troubleshooting
- Keypad is not responding: Change battery.
- Desired user code cannot be programmed: For security reasons, the first 4 digits of each user code must be unique.
- Key cannot be removed when unlocked: This is a feature (store room function) to ensure the door is always locked. To remove the key, return it to the vertical position.
Important Safeguards
- Read all instructions in their entirety.
- Remind all users of safety precautions.
- Protect your user codes and programming code.
- Dispose of used batteries according to local laws and regulations.
CAUTION: Prevent unauthorized entry. Since anyone with access to the back panel can change the user codes, you must restrict access to the back panel and routinely check the user codes to ensure they have not been altered without your knowledge. The use of a program code can help protect your system's settings.
WARNING: No lock can provide complete security by itself. This lock may be defeated by forcible or technical means, or evaded by entry elsewhere on the property. No lock can substitute for caution, awareness of your environment, and common sense. Builder's hardware is available in multiple performance grades to suit the application. In order to enhance security and reduce risk, you should consult a qualified locksmith or other security professional.
