Introduction
Thank you for purchasing this Acurite product. This wireless thermometer features outdoor temperature, outdoor temperature memory (daily high/low), indoor temperature, and an atomic clock. Please read this manual in its entirety for full benefits and features. Keep this manual for future reference.
Note: A clear protective film is applied to the LCD and must be removed before use. Locate the clear tab and peel to remove.
1. Overview of Features
The main unit displays:
- Wireless Signal Reception Indicator: Shows the strength of the signal from the wireless sensor.
- Outdoor Temperature: Displays the current outdoor temperature.
- Outdoor Temperature Trend Indicator: Compares the last 10 minutes of temperature data to the previous hour's average to indicate temperature direction (rising, decreasing, or steady).
- Outdoor Temperature Daily High/Low: Shows the highest and lowest recorded temperatures since midnight.
- Time Zone: Allows selection of the appropriate time zone.
- Atomic Clock: Receives signals from the WWVB atomic clock for accurate timekeeping.
- Atomic Clock Signal Reception Indicator: Shows the status of the atomic clock signal reception.
- Indoor Temperature: Displays the current indoor temperature.
- AM/PM Indicator: Indicates AM or PM for the displayed time.
- Daylight Saving Time (DST) Indicator: Shows if DST is active.
About the Atomic Clock
Atomic clocks are highly accurate, maintaining accuracy within one second per million years. Consumer atomic clocks achieve this by receiving signals from a primary atomic clock. In North America, the National Institute of Standards and Technology operates an atomic clock in Colorado, transmitting time codes via the WWVB radio station at a very low frequency (60,000 Hz). The Acurite clock receives this signal. Signal strength can be affected by solar radiation, with weaker signals during the day and stronger signals at night.
2. Setup
Install Batteries
Install batteries in both units within a 6-minute period to ensure proper wireless synchronization.
A. Wireless Sensor
- Remove the 4 battery compartment screws.
- Remove the battery compartment cover.
- Install 2 fresh "AA" batteries, observing correct polarity.
Important: Always install batteries into the wireless sensor FIRST to ensure proper wireless synchronization with the main unit.
B. Main Unit
- Remove the battery compartment cover.
- Install 3 fresh "AA" batteries, observing correct polarity.
Select Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F)
Slide the switch located inside the main unit's battery compartment to select either °C or °F for temperature display.
Main Unit: Basic Setup
After installing batteries and selecting the temperature unit, set the time zone, time, and DST. The atomic clock will automatically adjust for DST after the initial manual setting.
- Time Zone: The time zone will flash initially (default is PST). Use the '◀' or '▶' buttons on the back of the main unit to adjust, then press 'SET' to confirm and proceed.
- DST: Select 'on' or 'off' for Daylight Saving Time using the '▶' or '◀' buttons. Press 'SET' to confirm.
- Hour: Adjust the hour using the '▶' or '▶' buttons. Press 'SET' to confirm and move to minute setting.
- Minute: Adjust the minutes using the '▶' or '▶' buttons. You can press and hold these buttons for faster adjustment. Press 'SET' to confirm.
- Press 'SET' one more time to exit basic setup mode. Basic setup can be re-entered at any time by pressing the 'SET' button.
The wireless sensor will soon send a signal to the main unit for synchronization. This may take a few minutes. If units do not function properly, refer to the troubleshooting section.
3. Placement
Ensure the wireless sensor is placed within 100 feet of the main unit.
Radio frequency communication can be affected by electronic devices and large metallic items. Keep both units at least 3 feet away from appliances (TVs, microwaves, radios) and objects like large metal surfaces or thick walls that may interfere with wireless communication.
Placement of Main Unit
Place the main unit in a dry, dust-free area. To ensure accurate indoor temperature readings, place it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources or vents.
The main unit can be hung on a wall using the integrated hang hole or placed on a flat surface using the detachable table stand.
Placement of Sensor
The wireless sensor MUST be placed OUTDOORS to measure outdoor temperatures. Ensure it is within 100 feet of the main unit.
The sensor is water-resistant but designed for outdoor use. To prolong its life, place it in an area protected from direct weather elements. For accurate readings, place the sensor out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
Wireless Reception
The wireless signal reception indicator on the main unit shows signal strength. Low bars may result in no temperature display ('--') or clock inaccuracy. If this occurs, relocate one or both units. If most or all 4 bars are present, reception is good.
4. Operation
Once the main unit and wireless sensor are powered on and synchronized, no further input is required. The atomic clock will periodically re-synchronize to maintain accuracy and adjust for DST automatically.
Batteries typically last approximately one year. Replace batteries following the installation procedure in this manual.
Troubleshooting
Problem | Possible Solution |
---|---|
Bad Temperature Reception (no bars) | Relocate the main unit and/or wireless sensor. Ensure both units are within 100 feet of each other and at least 3 feet from interfering electronic devices or large metallic objects. It may take up to 20 minutes for the main unit to resynchronize after battery replacement. |
Bad Atomic Clock Reception (no bars) | Relocate the main unit at least 3 feet from interfering electronic devices. Large metallic surfaces can also interfere with the atomic clock signal. |
No Outdoor Temperature or Humidity Display (no communication) | If wireless reception is poor (no bars), refer to the "Bad Reception" section. Ensure the Wireless ID setting on both the main unit and the wireless sensor match. See "Set Wireless ID" below. |
Main Unit Display Not Working | Ensure batteries are installed correctly. Batteries may need replacement. |
Set Wireless ID
This thermometer uses 433 MHz radio frequency for communication. To resolve reception problems due to interference, you can select a wireless ID (A, B, or C) for both the main unit and the wireless sensor. The ID switches are located within the battery compartments. Both the main unit and the wireless sensor IDs must match for successful synchronization.
