BH EMOTION EVO USER MANUAL 2017

Welcome to your BH EMOTION electric bicycle.

Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase of this BH EMOTION. Enjoy your BH bike!

For over a century, BH has been synonymous with bicycles, cycling, sportsmanship and the will to improve. Many children have given their first, hesitant turns of the pedals with BH and many legendary cyclists built their reputations on our bicycles. The industrial activity of BH (Beistegui Hermanos) began in 1909, in the arms manufacturing town of Eibar (Guipúzcoa, Spain) thanks to the talent and entrepreneurial spirit of three brothers: Cosme, Domingo and Juan Beistegui Albistegui. The company, which initially manufactured weapons, took a radical change of direction after the First World War and set out to provide a fast, comfortable and affordable means of transport for the residents of Eibar. The result was some very lightweight, agile and reliable bicycles. This was the birth of one of the current cycling icons and one of the strongest and most successful brands. From that point onwards, thanks to technological advances and its commitment to sport, BH has brought sporting triumphs and numerous innovations to the world of cycling.

This manual is designed to help you with the functions and maintenance of your BH EMOTION pedal-assist bicycle.

Pedal Assistance System Operation

Components of the Pedal Assistance System

The BH EMOTION pedal assistance system consists of the following components:

Diagrams showing component placement on EVO/NITRO, ATOM, EVO AWD, and EASY GO models are provided.

The Pedal Assistance System

Provides optimal assisted power based on pedalling force, speed, and drivetrain. Assistance is not provided in the following situations:

Assistance Modes of the Pedal Assistance System

There are 5 power assistance modes:

ModeDescription
100% or BOOSTMaximum power.
70% or SPORTClimbing difficult terrains.
50% or NORMALComfortable ride, e.g., climbing a steep hill.
30% or ECOTravel as far as possible.
0% or NO ASSISTTravel without assisted power.

Use the (+) button to increase assistance level and (-) button to reduce it.

Range of the Pedal Assistance System

Range varies based on riding conditions, including:

Starting Pedalling

Sit on the seat and hold the handlebar firmly. Use caution with high assistance modes (100%/BOOST, 70%/SPORT) as the motor provides maximum thrust. For acceleration, the motor provides an initial thrust. Minimal force is needed to start motion.

WARNING: Start pedalling with a short gear ratio (higher gears) and low assistance mode (30% or ECO) for better control, safety, and energy consumption. Higher modes may risk user safety.

WARNING: When pushing the bike while walking, ensure the system is disconnected.

Display Panel

Overview of the Display Panel

Two types of display panels exist:

Display Panel Operation

  1. Installation of the Fixed or Removable Display Panel:

The panel can be fixed or removable using an M3 screw. To remove, loosen grips, brake lever, shift lever, and panel bracket. Push the flap beneath the panel and slide upwards.

NOTE: To reduce theft risk, loosen components before removing the screw.

  2. Switching the Pedal Assistance System On and Off:

Press and hold the POWER button for 3 seconds to turn on or off. The bicycle can be used without assistance.

WARNING: Check the assistance mode after turning on. It defaults to the last selected mode.

NOTE: Wait 3 seconds after turning on before pedalling to allow system calibration. Pressing the pedal too early may cause errors.

  3. Pedal Assistance Mode Selection:

    5 modes available: 100% BOOST, 70% SPORT, 50% NORMAL, 30% ECO, 0% NO ASSIST.

Use (+) to increase assistance level, (-) to decrease level.

NOTE: Selecting appropriate modes balances battery economy and comfort.

  4. Turning the Bicycle Lights and Backlighting On and Off:

Hold the (-) button for 3 seconds. A lights indicator will appear on screen.

  5. Selecting Information on the Screen:

Press the POWER button to cycle through information: Total distance, Total time, Average total speed, Trip distance, Trip time, Average trip speed, Range (TO GO km).

To reset trip information, hold ON/OFF and (-) buttons for 3 seconds.

NOTE: Range is calculated based on recent riding conditions and battery capacity.

  6. Battery Level Indicator:

5-segment scale showing estimated battery capacity (91-100% down to 0-10%).

NOTE: Assistance modes are limited based on battery charge to prolong life and prevent damage (e.g., 100%/BOOST unavailable below 20% charge).

  7. Settings Menu:

Access by holding (+) and (-) for 3 seconds. Use POWER button to scroll options. Exit by holding POWER for 3 seconds.

Settings include: Wheel size, Km/Miles, AWD Mode (ALL, ECO, FRONT, REAR, OFF), Battery type, Controller temperature, Torque sensor reading, Battery state of health, Controller firmware version.

WARNING: Make adjustments while stopped in a safe place.

  8. Throttle Function (NITRO models):

Max speed 6 km/h (EN 15194 compliant). Activate by holding (+) for 3 seconds. Cancel by releasing (+).

  9. System Error Indicator:

Activated when a malfunction occurs. Check battery charge, restart system. If persistent, disconnect motor and contact BH store.

WARNING: If problem persists, contact a BH store.

  10. USB Port (Central Display Panel only):

Below the screen for charging devices.

ATTENTION: Do not force the USB port or cable. Ensure plug is dry and correctly inserted. Use standard USB 2.0 OTG cable. Do not insert foreign objects. Charging devices may reduce bicycle range.

  11. Exclusive features of NITRO models:

Throttle in right grip, max speed 20 km/h, activated only in "0%" assistance mode.

WARNING: NITRO models approved as motorcycles; require insurance, helmet, license, registration plate.

FAQ

What is this bicycle's maximum speed?

Pedal assistance disabled above 25 km/h (EN 15194 regulation). NITRO models: max 45 km/h (motorcycle approval). AWD models: max 35 km/h (off-road use only).

Isn't a BH bicycle extremely heavy?

BH EMOTION bikes weigh 15–30 kg, among the lightest e-bikes. They are 3–6 kg heavier than standard bikes due to battery and motor.

Should I take any additional precautions?

Pay special attention when starting the BH EMOTION due to motor thrust. Start in 30%/ECO mode with a short gear ratio.

Do I have to stop every time that I want to activate pedal assistance?

No, but it's advisable to stop pedalling for two seconds after pressing ON/OFF for proper activation.

Can I stand over the bicycle when I stop at traffic lights?

Yes. The motor remains inactive without pedal pressure. Greater pedal force means greater forward thrust.

How often should I take the bicycle to a BH store for maintenance?

Similar to standard bicycles, depending on use and care.

What should I do when I don't plan to use the bicycle for a long period of time?

Charge to 50% before storing. Check charge level every three months and keep above 50%.

Why is the range reduced when it is frosty or very cold?

Below -5°C, battery performance is reduced, limiting discharge and range. No damage occurs.

Can I purchase additional batteries?

Yes, available at BH stores. Recommended if longer range is needed and charging is not possible between journeys.

Can I use the battery from my wife's electric bicycle?

Only if it's a compatible BH bicycle model. Using incompatible batteries can cause irreparable damage and void the warranty.

Should I use a helmet?

Recommended for safety, though laws vary by country.

Should I have third-party liability insurance?

Not compulsory, except for NITRO models.

Is there a minimum age required for using a BH bike?

No, except for NITRO models.
