Sonos One: Smart Speaker Guide and Setup

Sonos One: The Smart Speaker for Music Lovers

Overview

The Sonos One is a smart speaker designed for music lovers, offering a perfect fit for various spaces and versatile control options.

  • Ideal for shelves, counters, snug spaces, or mounted to a wall, ceiling, or speaker stand.
  • Control your music using the Sonos S2 or Sonos S1 app, the touch controls on the speaker, or your voice.
  • Pair two Sonos Ones for immersive left-right stereo sound, or use them as rear surrounds for a home theater experience.
  • Refer to the "Setup" section to add a Sonos One to your system.

Control and Lights

Volume Control

Use the touch controls on the speaker:

  • Volume up: Touch the right side.
  • Volume down: Touch the left side.
Touch and hold to quickly change the volume.

You can also adjust volume using the Sonos app or voice commands.

Play/Pause

  • Press once to play or pause audio.
  • Press and hold to add the music playing in another room.

Next/Previous Track

  • Swipe right to skip to the next song.
  • Swipe left to go to the previous song.

Note: You cannot skip forward or go back when listening to a radio station.

Microphone

Tap to turn the microphone on or off. The microphone LED light indicates its status:

  • Microphone light on: Voice control is active and ready, and microphone-dependent features like Trueplay tuning are available.
  • Microphone light off: Voice control is inactive, and microphone-dependent features are unavailable.

If you've installed a voice service, you can still use voice commands by pressing and holding the microphone button (no wake word needed). Voice control turns off when you release the button.

Status Light

This light displays the speaker's WiFi connection, indicates when the volume is muted, and signals errors. You can learn more about it. If the light is distracting, it can be turned off in the settings.

If you prefer not to allow playback or volume adjustments via the speaker's touch controls, you can disable them in the room's settings.

Connector Panel

The connector panel on the back of the Sonos One includes:

  • 1. Join button: Press to connect to your Sonos system during setup.
  • 2. Ethernet port: Use an Ethernet cable to connect to a router, computer, or network-attached storage (NAS) device (optional).
  • 3. AC power (mains) input: Use only the supplied power cord. Using a third-party power cord may void your warranty. Ensure the power cord is inserted firmly until it is flush with the bottom of the speaker.

Select a Location

The Sonos One can be placed almost anywhere. For optimal performance, follow these guidelines:

  • Sonos One sounds great when placed near a wall or on a shelf. For best performance, maintain at least 1 inch (2.5cm) of space around the back of the speaker.
  • The speaker is humidity-resistant and suitable for use in a bathroom.
  • It is not water-resistant; avoid placing it near water or leaving it in the rain.

Advanced Setups

Set Up Stereo Pair

Pair two Sonos speakers in the same room for a wider, more immersive stereo experience. One speaker will handle the left channel, and the other will handle the right channel.

Note: Both speakers in a stereo pair must be the same model.

  1. Place the speakers 8 to 10 feet apart. Position your favorite listening spot 8 to 12 feet from the paired speakers for optimal stereo imaging (closer distance increases bass, farther distance improves stereo imaging).
  2. Navigate to ⚙️ System.
  3. Select one of the speakers for the stereo pair and choose "Set Up Stereo Pair" to begin. Learn more about this process.

Set Up Surrounds

Turn two Sonos speakers (same model), or a Sonos Amp with compatible speakers, into dedicated left and right rear channels for your home theater.

  1. Position each surround speaker approximately 10 feet from your primary listening position, angling them towards the seating area.
  2. Navigate to ⚙️ System.
  3. Select a room that includes a soundbar and choose "Add Surrounds" to configure.

Note: Grouping rooms or creating a stereo pair instead will not enable surround sound functionality.

Surround Audio Settings:

Setting Description
Surrounds Turn surround sound On or Off.
TV Level Adjust surround volume for TV audio.
Music Level Adjust surround volume for music.
Music Playback Choose between "Ambient" (subtle) or "Full" (louder, full range). This setting does not apply to Dolby Atmos Music playback.

Voice Services

Control your Sonos system and content using voice commands with any voice-enabled Sonos product. You can play music, manage playback, and adjust volume.

  • Sonos Voice Control: Offers hands-free control of your entire Sonos system with enhanced privacy. It's ready to use immediately after setup. Learn more about Sonos Voice Control.
  • Amazon Alexa: Requires the Sonos app and the Alexa app with the Sonos skill enabled. Setup involves changes in both applications. Learn more about integrating Alexa.
  • Google Assistant: Requires the Sonos app and the Google Assistant app. Setup involves changes in both applications. Learn more about integrating Google Assistant.
  • Siri: Compatible with AirPlay 2-enabled Sonos speakers. Add your speakers to the Apple Home app and use an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV to ask Siri to play music (currently limited to Apple Music). Learn more about using Siri.

Voice control availability may vary by country. Features will be enabled as Sonos and voice services launch in your region.

Microphone On/Off

The microphone is essential for voice control and features like Trueplay tuning. Press the microphone icon ? to toggle it on or off. The microphone LED light will indicate when your voice assistant is listening.

  • When the microphone light is on: Voice control is active and ready, and microphone-dependent features like Trueplay are available.
  • When the microphone light is off: Voice control is inactive, and microphone-dependent features are unavailable.

Trueplay™ Tuning

Trueplay tuning optimizes your Sonos speaker's sound for any room by measuring how sound reflects off surfaces. It fine-tunes the audio for great sound regardless of placement.

Trueplay requires an iOS mobile device running iOS 8 or later. During tuning, you will move around the room holding your device.

  1. Navigate to ⚙️ System and select the room you wish to tune.
  2. Choose "Trueplay Tuning" to begin.

Note: Trueplay tuning is not available if VoiceOver is enabled on your iOS device. Disable VoiceOver in your device settings before tuning.

Auto Trueplay

Portable Sonos products (like Sonos Roam and Move) can automatically tune themselves using Auto Trueplay. This feature uses the speaker's microphone to detect the environment and make periodic adjustments for optimal sound quality wherever the speaker is placed.

To enable Auto Trueplay, navigate to ⚙️ System and select your portable speaker.

Product Settings

Customize your Sonos products for your environment. Navigate to ⚙️ System and select the specific product.

  • Room Name: If you move your speaker to a new room, you can rename it in Settings.
  • Turn off WiFi (not on portable products): When connected via Ethernet, you can disable WiFi to reduce power consumption and potentially improve connectivity for wired speakers. For products like Amp and Port, disabling WiFi can also help manage internal temperature in stacked or racked setups. Learn more.
  • EQ: Sonos products come with preset equalization settings. You can adjust sound settings (bass, treble, balance, loudness) to your personal preferences. Learn more.
  • Trueplay: Trueplay automatically tunes the sound for your surroundings and content. Portable products can also utilize Auto Trueplay. Learn more.
  • Volume Limit: Set a maximum volume level for each room. Learn more.
  • Status Light: Displays WiFi connection status, volume mute status, and error indicators. Learn more. If the light is distracting, it can be turned off in Settings.
  • Touch Controls: You can disable the speaker's touch controls, for example, to prevent accidental adjustments by children or pets. Learn more.
  • Battery Saver (portable products): Conserve battery life by setting portable speakers to power off automatically instead of entering sleep mode. The speaker will not appear in the Sonos app until it is powered back on.
  • Line-In (products with line-in capability): Connect external audio devices like turntables or stereos to Sonos Amp, Port, or Five. Navigate to Browse Line-In and select the source to start playback. You can adjust settings like source name, audio level, and autoplay.
