Sonos Move: Portable Smart Speaker
Overview
Sonos Move is a durable, battery-powered smart speaker designed for both indoor and outdoor listening. It features a rechargeable battery with up to 10 hours of playback and can be easily recharged on its charging base. For power on the go, a compatible USB-C charger can be used (sold separately). Its weatherproof design makes it suitable for various outdoor activities. Stream content via WiFi or Bluetooth®. Control your Move using the Sonos S2 or S1 app, the speaker's touch controls, or your voice. It integrates seamlessly with other Sonos speakers for multiroom listening. Refer to the 'Setup' section to add Move to your Sonos System.
Controls and Lights
The Sonos Move features intuitive controls and status lights:
- Volume Control: Use the right side for volume up and the left side for volume down. Touch and hold to quickly adjust volume. Volume can also be adjusted via the Sonos app and voice control.
- Play/Pause: Press once to play or pause music. Press and hold to add the currently playing music to another room.
- Next/Previous Track: Swipe right to skip to the next song. Swipe left to go to the previous song. Note: Skipping is not available for radio stations.
- Microphone Button: Tap to turn the microphone on or off. The microphone LED indicates its status. When the light is on, voice control and auto Trueplay are available. When off, these features are unavailable. Press and hold the button (without a wake word) to use voice commands when the microphone is off.
- Status Light: Indicates WiFi or Bluetooth connection, muted volume, and errors. This light can be turned off in Settings.
- Battery Light: Shows battery status. Blinking orange indicates low battery; solid orange indicates charging. The light may remain on for several minutes while charging.
Battery Saver: To conserve battery, Move can be set to power off automatically instead of sleeping. This setting is found under System > Move. The speaker will not appear in the app until powered back on.
Touch Control Disabling: Touch controls can be disabled in the room's settings to prevent accidental adjustments.
Connector Panel
The connector panel on the back of the Sonos Move includes:
- Power Button: Press to power on, short press to sleep, long press (5 seconds) to power off. The speaker goes to sleep automatically when not in use if not on the charging base.
- Join Button: Used to connect to your Sonos system during setup.
- Handle: Toggles between Bluetooth and WiFi modes.
- USB-C Port: For charging on the go with a compatible USB-C charger (45W, 20V/2.25A). Also used for diagnostic purposes.
- Charging Contacts: Connects to the charging base.
- Charging Base: Included for easy recharging.
Note: USB-C cable is not included.
Charging Dock
Place the Sonos Move on the included charging base for convenient recharging without extra wires. Ensure the speaker is properly seated and the charging contacts are aligned. The charging base is for indoor use only.
Location Guidelines
Sonos Move can be placed almost anywhere. For optimal performance:
- Allow at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) of space around the back of the speaker.
- Move is durable with a tough outer shell and IP56 rating, resistant to drops, bumps, moisture, dust, UV rays, and extreme temperatures. Avoid leaving it in heavy rain. The charging base is for indoor use only.
- With the microphone on, Auto Trueplay automatically tunes the speaker to the room's acoustics for optimal sound.
- Do not use or store the Sonos Move upside down.
Bluetooth Pairing
- Enable Bluetooth on your device.
- Press the mode button on the back of Move to switch to Bluetooth mode.
- Select 'Move' from your device's Bluetooth settings. If it doesn't appear, press and hold the mode button until 'Move' appears in the list. A confirmation tone will sound upon successful pairing. Devices will automatically connect in Bluetooth mode on subsequent use.
Switching Modes
After initial WiFi setup, use the mode switch on the back of Move to toggle between Bluetooth and WiFi. First-time Bluetooth use requires pairing with your device.
Charging
Recharge Move by placing it on the charging base. Ensure good contact with the charging pins. For charging on the go, use a compatible USB-C charger (45W, 20V/2.25A).
Microphone On/Off
The microphone enables voice control and features like Trueplay tuning. Press the microphone button (?️) to toggle the microphone and its indicator light. When the light is on, voice control and Trueplay are active. When off, they are inactive. Even with the microphone off, you can activate voice control by pressing and holding the button.
Voice Services
Control your Sonos system with voice commands using compatible voice services:

Trueplay™ Tuning
Trueplay tuning analyzes room acoustics and optimizes the speaker's sound. It requires an iOS device (iOS 8 or later). During tuning, you'll move around the room holding your device.
- Go to Settings (⚙️) > System, and select the room.
- Choose Trueplay Tuning.
Note: Disable VoiceOver on your iOS device before starting Trueplay tuning.
Auto Trueplay
Portable Sonos products like Move can tune themselves automatically using their microphones to adapt to the environment and ensure optimal sound quality wherever they are placed.
Enable Auto Trueplay in Settings (⚙️) > System, and select your portable speaker.
Set Up Stereo Pair
Create a wider stereo experience by pairing two identical Sonos speakers in the same room. One speaker will handle the left channel, and the other the right.
- Position the speakers 8 to 10 feet apart. For optimal listening, position yourself 8 to 12 feet from the speakers.
- Go to Settings (⚙️) > System.
- Select one speaker, then choose Set Up Stereo Pair.
Product Settings
Customize your Sonos products via Settings (⚙️) > System > [Product Name]:
- Room Name: Change the speaker's name if moved to a different room.
- Turn off WiFi: (Not available for Era 100, Era 300, or portable products). Disable WiFi when connected via Ethernet to reduce power consumption and potentially improve connectivity.
- EQ Settings: Adjust bass, treble, balance, and loudness to your preference.
- Trueplay: Manage Trueplay tuning settings.
- Volume Limit: Set a maximum volume level for each room.
- Status Light: Turn off the status light if it's distracting.
- Touch Controls: Disable touch controls to prevent accidental activation.
- Battery Saver: Configure automatic power-off for portable products.
- Line-In Settings: (For products with line-in capability) Customize source name, source level, audio delay, and autoplay settings for connected audio devices.
