Sonos One Smart Speaker
Overview
The Sonos One is a smart speaker designed for music lovers, offering a perfect fit for shelves, counters, and snug spaces, or it can be mounted to a wall, ceiling, or speaker stand.
Enjoy freedom of control using the Sonos S2 or Sonos S1 app, the touch controls on the speaker, or your voice. You can pair two Sonos Ones for left-right stereo sound, or use two Sonos Ones as rear surrounds for your home theater. Refer to the 'Setup' section when you are ready to add a Sonos One to your system.
Control and Lights
The top of the Sonos One features touch controls and a status light.
Volume Control
Touch the right side of the top panel to increase volume, and the left side to decrease volume. Touch and hold either side to quickly change the volume. You can also use the Sonos app and voice control to adjust volume.
Play/Pause
Press the play/pause button once to play or pause audio. Press and hold it to add the music that's playing in another room.
Next/Previous
Swipe right on the top panel to skip to the next song. Swipe left to go to the previous song. Note: You cannot skip forward or go back when listening to a radio station.
Microphone
Tap the microphone icon ?️ to turn the microphone on or off. When the microphone light is on, voice control is active and your voice service is ready to respond. When the light is off, voice control is off. If you have installed a voice service and the microphone is off, you can still use voice commands by pressing and holding the microphone icon (no need for a wake word). Voice control turns off again when you release the button.
Status Light
The status light displays the product's connection to WiFi, indicates when the volume is muted, and signals errors. You can learn more about its functions. Note: If the light is distracting, you can disable it in the room's settings.
You can disable the speaker's touch controls in the room settings to prevent accidental adjustments by children or pets.
Connector Panel
The rear of the Sonos One features the following connectors:
- Join button: Press this button to connect to your Sonos system during setup.
- Ethernet port: Use an Ethernet cable to connect to a router, computer, or network-attached storage (NAS) device if desired.
- AC power (mains) input: Use only the supplied power cord. Using a third-party power cord may void your warranty. Ensure the power cord is inserted firmly until it is flush with the bottom of the speaker.
Placement and Setup
Select a Location
The Sonos One can be placed almost anywhere. For optimal performance, follow these guidelines:
- Sonos One sounds great even when placed next to a wall or on a shelf. For best performance, leave at least 1 inch (2.5cm) of space around the back of the speaker.
- The speaker is humidity-resistant, making it suitable for use in bathrooms.
- It is not water-resistant, so avoid placing it near water or leaving it in the rain.
Set up Stereo Pair
Pair two Sonos speakers in the same room for a wider, stereo experience. One speaker will serve as the left channel and the other as the right channel. Note: The Sonos speakers in a stereo pair must be the same type.
- Place the speakers 8 to 10 feet apart. Your primary listening position should be 8 to 12 feet from the paired speakers; a shorter distance increases bass, while a greater distance improves stereo imaging.
- Navigate to > System within the Sonos app.
- Select one of the speakers you wish to use in the stereo pair, then choose 'Set Up Stereo Pair' to begin.
Set up Surrounds
Easily convert two Sonos speakers (same model) or a Sonos Amp and your preferred non-Sonos speakers into separate right and left channels for your home theater.
- Place each surround speaker approximately 10 feet from your primary listening position, angling them towards the seating area.
- Navigate to > System within the Sonos app.
- Select a room that has a soundbar and choose 'Add Surrounds' to start the setup.
Note: Grouping rooms or creating a stereo pair instead will not enable surround sound. Learn more.
Surround Audio Settings
During setup, surround sound is optimized for your room. These settings can be adjusted:
Setting | Description |
---|---|
Surrounds | Turn surround sound On or Off. |
TV Level | Adjust surround volume for TV audio. |
Music Level | Adjust surround volume for music. |
Music Playback | Choose between 'Ambient' (subtle) or 'Full' (louder, full range). This setting does not apply to Dolby Atmos Music playback. |
Voice Services
Control your Sonos system with any voice-enabled Sonos product. You can play and control content, adjust volume, and more.
- Sonos Voice Control: Offers hands-free control of your entire Sonos system with enhanced privacy. It's ready to use immediately after setup, typically taking only a few seconds to add. Learn more.
- Amazon Alexa: Requires the Sonos app and the Alexa app with the Sonos skill enabled. Some changes may be needed in both apps during setup. Learn more.
- Google Assistant: Requires the Sonos app and the Google Assistant app. Some changes may be needed in both apps during setup. Learn more.
- Siri: Requires the Apple Home app. Add your AirPlay 2-compatible Sonos speakers to the Apple Home app. Then, use an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV to ask Siri to play music (currently limited to Apple Music). Learn more.
Note: Voice control availability may vary by country. This feature will be available as soon as Sonos and a voice service launch together in your region.
Microphone On/Off
The microphone is used for voice control and microphone-dependent features like Trueplay tuning. Press the microphone icon ?️ to turn it on or off; the microphone LED light indicates when your voice assistant is listening.
- When the microphone light is on: Voice control is active and ready to respond, and microphone-dependent features like Trueplay are available.
- When the microphone light is off: Voice control is off, and microphone-dependent features like Trueplay are unavailable.
Trueplay™
Trueplay tuning analyzes how sound reflects off surfaces in your room to fine-tune your Sonos speaker for optimal sound quality, regardless of placement. Trueplay works with iOS mobile devices running iOS 8 or later. During tuning, you will move around the room holding your mobile device.
- Select > System in the Sonos app, and choose the room you want to tune.
- Select 'Trueplay Tuning' to begin.
Note: Trueplay tuning is not available if VoiceOver is enabled on your iOS device. Turn VoiceOver off in your device settings before tuning your speakers.
Auto Trueplay
Portable Sonos products like Sonos Roam and Move can tune themselves automatically. Auto Trueplay uses the speaker's microphone to detect the environment and make periodic tuning adjustments, ensuring great sound wherever your speaker is and whatever you are listening to. To enable auto Trueplay, go to > System and select your portable speaker.
Product Settings
Customize your Sonos products for your surroundings by navigating to > System and selecting your product.
- Room Name: If you move your speaker to a new room, you can change its name in 'Settings'.
- Turn off WiFi: (Not available for Sonos Era 100, Era 300, or portable products) You can turn off your speaker's WiFi when it's connected to your network via an Ethernet cable. This reduces power consumption and can improve connectivity for wired speakers. For products like Amp and Port, turning off WiFi can reduce internal temperature when placed in a rack or stacked. Learn more. Note: WiFi is automatically turned off for Era 100 and Era 300 when a Sonos Combo Adapter is connected via Ethernet.
- EQ: Sonos products come with preset equalization settings. You can adjust sound settings (bass, treble, balance, or loudness) to suit your preferences. Learn more.
- Trueplay: Trueplay adapts the sound for your surroundings and content. Portable products can tune themselves automatically. Learn more.
- Volume Limit: Set a maximum volume for each room. Learn more.
- Status Light: Displays the speaker's connection to WiFi, indicates when the volume is muted, and signals errors. Learn more. Note: If the light is distracting, you can turn it off in 'Settings'.
- Touch Controls: Disable the speaker's touch controls to prevent accidental playback or volume adjustments. Learn more.
- Battery Saver: (Portable products only) To conserve battery life, set your portable speaker to power off automatically instead of going to sleep. It will not appear in the Sonos app until powered back on.
Line-In
(Sonos products with line-in capability)
When connecting a projector, turntable, stereo, or other audio device to a Sonos product, you can adjust these line-in settings:
- Source name: Assign a name to the line-in device.
- Source level: Adjust the line-in source level if the default volume setting is too quiet or distorted.
- Audio Delay: Add a delay between the line-in source and Sonos to reduce audio issues when playing line-in audio on grouped speakers.
- Autoplay: Choose a room to automatically start playing line-in audio when Sonos detects a signal on the line-in port. (Autoplay is disabled by default.)
