Setup
Select a location
You can place your speaker almost anywhere. For optimal performance, consider these guidelines:
- The S39 is designed to deliver powerful sound in any environment. Trueplay tuning balances the sound based on your room's acoustics and your listening preferences.
- The S39 sounds great even when placed near a wall or on a shelf. For best performance, ensure at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) of space around the back of the speaker.
- If using S39s as surrounds, maintain at least 8 inches (203 mm) of clearance around each speaker.
Bluetooth pairing
- Turn Bluetooth on in your device settings.
- Press and hold the Bluetooth button on the back of the speaker until you hear the pairing tone, then release. The status light will blink blue when the speaker is ready to pair.
- Select "S39" from the list of available devices in your Bluetooth settings. Your mobile device will automatically connect next time.
Set up stereo pair
Pair two Sonos speakers of the same model in the same room for a wider, stereo experience. One speaker acts as the left channel, and the other as the right channel.
- Note: Sonos speakers in a stereo pair must be the same type.
- Place the speakers 8 to 10 feet apart. Your primary listening position should be 8 to 12 feet from the paired speakers; closer placement emphasizes bass, while greater distance enhances stereo imaging.
- Navigate to Settings ⚙️ > System.
- Select one of the speakers you wish to use in the stereo pair, then choose "Set Up Stereo Pair" to begin. Learn more.
Set up surrounds
Easily turn two Sonos speakers (same model), or a Sonos Amp and compatible non-Sonos speakers, into separate right and left channels for your home theater setup.
- Place each surround speaker approximately 10 feet from your favorite listening position, angling them towards the seating area.
- Navigate to Settings ⚙️ > System.
- Select a room that includes a soundbar and choose "Add Surrounds" to get started.
- Note: Grouping rooms or creating a stereo pair instead will not enable surround sound. Learn more.
Surround audio settings
During setup, surround sound is optimized for your room. These settings can be adjusted:
Setting | Description |
---|---|
Surrounds | Turn surround sound On or Off. |
TV Level | Adjust surround volume for TV audio. |
Music Level | Adjust surround volume for music. |
Music Playback | Choose between "Ambient" (subtle) or "Full" (louder, full range). This setting does not apply to Dolby Atmos Music playback. |
Line-in
Connect the S39 to an audio device, such as a turntable or stereo, using a Sonos Line-In Adapter (sold separately). Then, navigate to Browse ➡️ > Line-In to select the source and start playback. Learn more.
Microphone on/off
There are two methods to control the microphones on the S39:
- A universal microphone switch located on the back of the S39 turns all microphones on and off.
- A voice services button on the top of the S39 toggles voice services on and off without affecting microphones needed for Trueplay and other microphone-dependent features.
- When both the universal microphone switch and the voice services lights are on, voice control and all microphone-dependent features are available.
- When both the universal microphone switch and the voice services lights are off, voice control is off, and all microphone-dependent features are unavailable.
- When the universal microphone switch is on and the voice services lights are off, voice control is off, but Trueplay and other microphone-dependent features remain available.
Trueplay™
Trueplay tuning measures how sound reflects off walls, furnishings, and other surfaces in a room, then fine-tunes your Sonos speaker for optimal sound quality regardless of placement.
Trueplay requires an iOS mobile device running iOS 8 or later. During tuning, you will move around the room holding your mobile device.
- Navigate to Settings ⚙️ > System, and select the room you wish to tune.
- Choose "Trueplay Tuning" to begin.
- Note: Trueplay tuning is not available if VoiceOver is enabled on your iOS device. Disable VoiceOver in your device settings before tuning your speakers.
Auto Trueplay
Portable Sonos products, such as Sonos Roam and Move, can tune themselves automatically. Auto Trueplay uses the speaker's microphone to detect the environment and make periodic tuning adjustments, ensuring great sound wherever your speaker is and whatever you're listening to.
Navigate to Settings ⚙️ > System, and select your portable speaker to enable Auto Trueplay.

Customize your Sonos products for your environment by navigating to Settings ⚙️ > System and selecting a product.
