Instructions for 1830-185 TCP/IP Manual Mode to RS-232 Converter Kit
General Information
These instructions are for the TCP/IP adapter, part number 1830-185. This is a manual setup device. For Plug and Play setup, use part number 1830-186 (requires DKS Data over IP or DKS VoIP Voice + Data subscription service).
The 1830-185 Converter Kit is compatible with the following DKS Systems: 1830 Series Telephone Entry and Access Control Systems (1833, 1834, 1835, 1837, 1838).
Refer to the following manuals for additional information:
- P/N 1835-065 Telephone Entry Systems Installation Manual
- P/N 1838-065 Access Controller Installation Manual
- P/N 1835-066 Remote Account Manager Software User Manual
Connection via Internet
To connect via the internet, the system requires port forwarding to be enabled in the default gateway (router). It also requires either a Static IP address or a DDNS Host service configured in the router. Firewalls must allow communication from the programming PC outside the network. These tasks require IT personnel.
Diagram Description: A diagram shows a computer connected to a router via a network cable. The router is connected to the internet. Another network interface device (NID) is shown connected to the internet via a router. The NID has connections for Ethernet, RS-232, and RS-485. The RS-232 connection is shown going to a DoorKing converter unit.
Connection via LAN
Diagram Description: A diagram illustrates a network setup. A computer is connected to a router via an Ethernet cable. The router is connected to the internet. A DoorKing converter unit is shown connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. The converter unit has connections for Ethernet, RS-232, and RS-485. The RS-232 connection is shown connecting to a DoorKing circuit board with terminals labeled Pwr, Network, DC 5-18V, Ethernet, and Reload Defaults.
RS-232 Terminal Connections:

Note: RS-232 wire runs are limited to 500 feet. For longer distances, use the RS232 to RS422 Extender Kit, P/N 1830-190 (4000 feet maximum distance).
Note: Ethernet wire runs are limited to 330 feet maximum.
Programming and Configuration
A. Windows (Computer) Settings
The converter has factory default settings. If these are satisfactory, no changes are needed. Default settings are:
- IP Address: 192.168.1.40
- Gateway: 192.168.1.1
- Port: 1040
- Baud: 19200
If changes are needed, navigate to Local Area Connections in Windows (Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Properties). Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. Before proceeding, record the current IP settings (IP Address, Subnet mask, Default gateway, Preferred DNS server, Alternate DNS server) or take a screenshot. To connect to the converter, change your PC's IP address to 192.168.1.1. After configuring the converter, revert your PC's IP address to its original settings.
B. Connect 1830-185 for Programming
- Unplug the network cable from your PC.
- Using the supplied network cable, connect one end to your PC and the other to the CONVERTER.
- Power the CONVERTER with the supplied power supply.
- When finished, plug the network cable back into the PC and the 1830-185 cable back into the router.
C. Accessing the 1830-185 Menus
- Open a web browser and enter the converter's address: http://192.168.1.40.
- The user login window will appear. Enter the username 'admin' and password 'admin'.
- The parameter window will appear, allowing you to change settings.
D. Changing 1830-185 Settings
The converter allows modification of various parameters including Port 0 Settings, Socket A Parameters, and IP Address Selection.
Port 0 Settings:
- Baud Rate: 19200 bps (600~1M)
- Data Size: 8 bit
- Parity: None
- Stop Bits: 1 bit
- Flow Mode: RTS/CTS
- UART packet Time: 0 (0~255)ms
- Sync Baudrate (RF2217 similar): Enabled
- Enable Uart Heartbeat Packet: Enabled
Socket A Parameters:
- Work Mode: TCP Server
- UART packet length: 0 (0~1460)chars
- TCP Server MAX Sockets: 8
- Local Port Number: 1040 (1~65535)
- Enable Net Heartbeat Packet: Enabled
- Poll Timeout: 200 (0~9999) ms
IP Address Selection:
- IP type: Static IP
- Static IP: 192.168.1.40
- Submask: 255.255.255.0
- Gateway: 192.168.1.1
- DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
Notes:
- Baud Rate can only be set to 9600 or 19200 for compatibility with 1830 Series boards.
- Leave other settings as shown for Server Mode.
- Do not change the password. DoorKing cannot assist if the password is forgotten.
- The system status window is informational.
Resetting the Converter
- Remove power from the module.
- Press and hold the Reload button for 3 seconds while applying power.
- The module will reset to factory defaults: TCP IP address 192.168.1.40, username 'admin', password 'admin'. All other settings will need to be reconfigured.
Important: After configuring the converter, restore your PC's Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings to their original configuration to regain network access.
