Interface Board (1972-010)
The interface board connects to the main board and provides connections for keypads, card readers, and RF receivers via RS-485. It also includes an RJ-45 jack for network connections.
- RS-485 Terminals: For connecting up to six RS-485 devices. Requires Cat5e wire.
- RJ-45 Jack: For network connections (LAN/WAN).
Interface Board LED Status
- RS-485 RX (Green): System is online and scanning RS-485 devices.
- BAD DNS (Yellow): Email server problem.
- LAN DOWN (Red): LAN, IP, or Gateway issue.
- PHONE LINE IN USE (Yellow): Phone line is active (dial-out, call forwarding).
- LAN CONNECTION (Green): Good wired connection to computer/router.
- DATA TRANSMIT (Yellow): TCP/IP connection is transmitting data or sending email.
Installation Overview
Proper installation is crucial for system performance and longevity. Key considerations include:
- Mounting Location: Mount the unit on a rigid wall, away from excessive shock or vibration. For vehicular gates, maintain a minimum of six (6) feet separation from the gate and operator.
- ADA Compliance: When controlling a public door, follow ADA mounting height and reach range requirements (refer to ICC/ANSI A117.1-2009).
- Wiring: Use appropriate gauge wire for power and telephone lines. Ensure telephone wires are twisted pair and rated for direct burial if used outdoors. Do not run power and telephone wires in the same conduit.
- Grounding: Proper grounding is essential to prevent component failure from static charges or surges. Use a minimum 12 AWG wire to a ground point within 10 feet of the device.
- Surge Suppression: Recommended for both telephone lines and low voltage power to protect against surges.
- Power: Use ONLY the specified 16.5 VAC, 20 VA transformer.
- Tamper Switch: Connect the tamper switch to a security device or system to comply with UL 294 standards. Failure to activate an alarm signal when tripped will void certification.
Programming Methods
The 1838 Access Plus can be programmed using three methods:
- Computer (Recommended): Using the DoorKing Access Plus Management software via LAN, WAN, or modem. This method offers the most comprehensive control and simplifies setup.
- System Keypad: Direct programming via the unit's keypad.
- Touch-Tone Telephone: Remote programming via a connected phone line.
Certain features, such as Strike Out, Holiday Schedules, Email Notification, and Transaction Log viewing, can only be programmed via the computer software.
Network Connections
The 1838 can connect to a network via:
- Crossover Cable: Direct connection from a computer to the 1838 (max 325 feet).
- Router (LAN): Connection through a Local Area Network (max 325 feet).
- Internet (WAN): Connection via a router and DSL/cable modem, using either a static or dynamic IP address.
Phone Modem Connection: Requires a dedicated phone line. The PC must be connected to a separate phone line for modem programming.

Troubleshooting
Common issues and their solutions are provided. Many problems are programming-related. Always check power, wiring, and programming before contacting support.
- Board Not Powering Up: Verify 16 VAC input power. Check for excessive voltage (OV LED ON).
- Cannot Enter Programming Mode: Ensure correct master code is used, buttons are pressed promptly, and the keypad is correctly connected.
- Keypad Dead: Check 16 VAC input power and keypad connection.
- Buzz or Noise on Line: Check for shorts, pinched wires, improper grounding, or incorrect cable types.
- System Not Answering Calls: Verify 'Answer Incoming Call' feature is enabled and the number of rings is set correctly.
- Electric Strike Locks / Gate Operator Holds Open: Check for voltage drop, or if a hold open schedule is enabled. Reprogram access codes as needed.
- Access Code Not Working: Verify correct code entry, check time zone restrictions, or ensure the code is not programmed for hold location.
