SITRANS FM: Standard Inlet / Outlet Conditions
For accurate flow measurements, SITRANS FM flowmeters require specific inlet and outlet conditions:
- Inlet: Allow 5xD (5 times the nominal diameter) of straight pipe.
- Outlet: Allow 3xD of straight pipe.
Conditions to avoid:
- Inlet conditions causing flow disturbances, such as elbows, tees, or reducers.
- Partially open valves less than 10xD at the inlet.
U-tube Installation: Suitable for partially filled pipes and pipes with downward flow, requiring free outlet flow.
With Reducer Installation: Applicable between two reducers (e.g., DIN 28545) at an angle of ≤ 8°, subject to pressure drop curves.
SITRANS FM: Flow installation in 0xD inlet and outlet conditions – non-optimal piping – Test conditions
Objective: To verify SITRANS FM flowmeter compliance with OIML R 49-2:2013, 7.10 for flow disturbance tests with zero upstream and downstream straight pipe lengths.
Test Description and Sequence: The tests involve using flow disturbers (types 1, 2, and 3) to determine the meter's indication error under various installation configurations.
- Flow Disturbance Scheme:
- Type 1: Swirl generator (sinistrorsal)
- Type 2: Swirl generator (dextrorsal)
- Type 3: Velocity profile flow disturber
- Straightener
- Test Conditions: Tests are conducted with and without straighteners for different upstream and downstream configurations.
Results and Conclusion
Results:
- The test reports indicate that even with non-standard installation, the flow meter provides relatively good accuracy.
- With zero inlet and outlet straight runs, accuracy is between ±0.2 to 0.6% ± 2 mm/s (max.).
- The liquid must be conductive and homogeneous for accurate measurement.
Conclusion:
- For optimal performance, the flowmeter must be installed according to Siemens' guidelines.
- Performance accuracy is within ±0.2 to 0.6% ± 2 mm/s (max.) under specific conditions.
- Optimal mechanical piping conditions may not always be feasible, and modifications can be impossible or expensive.
(*) Note: Results reflect performance under controlled conditions and serve as guidance for accuracy under 0xD installation conditions.
