Brookstone Smart WiFi Remote Control

USER MANUAL

This manual provides instructions for the Brookstone Smart WiFi Remote Control, Model BKSCNTRL.

The device is a sleek, black, oval-shaped remote control with the "Brookstone" logo on its top surface. It features an FCC ID: 2ANDL-UFOR1, RoHS compliance, and CE marking.

PRODUCT CONFIGURATION

The Brookstone Smart WiFi Remote Control has the following components:

DOWNLOAD APP

To use the Smart WiFi Remote Control, download the "Brookstone Smart" app:

  1. Android: Download the "Brookstone Smart" app from Google Play.
  2. iPhone: Download the "Brookstone Smart" app from the App Store.

The app icon is a dark gray square with "Brookstone SMART" in white text.

REGISTRATION AND LOGIN

  1. Run the “Brookstone Smart" app from your smartphone.
  2. Register and login. The app interface shows a login screen with "Register" and "Log in with existing account" options, and a home screen displaying weather information, device categories ("All devices", "Living Room", "Bedroom"), and a "+" button to add devices.

ADD DEVICE

  1. Plug in the Smart Wi-Fi Remote Control into a USB hub or computer. Hold the reset button until the indicator light blinks blue rapidly.
  2. Ensure your phone is connected to your Wi-Fi network and that it is a 2.4GHz network.
  3. Press the "+" symbol in the top right corner of the app and select the "Smart Controller” from the list of devices to add. The app displays various device types like "Smart Controller", "Smart Outlet", "Light Switch", "Smart Camera", "Smart Bulb", "Motion Sensor", "Water Sensor", and "Door/Window...".
  4. Confirm the indicator light is blinking and press the "Confirm indicator rapidly blinks" button in the app. The app screen shows a circular animation indicating the device is ready for connection.
  5. Ensure your phone is connected to the Wi-Fi network that the device will be connected to. Enter your password for the Wi-Fi network.
  6. The connecting process will begin. Do not turn off the Smart Wi-Fi Remote or phone while connecting. Wait for the connection process to complete. The app displays a "Connecting" screen with a percentage progress (e.g., 7%).
  7. Once the device has been successfully added, name the device what you would like it to be called in the app. The Smart Wi-Fi Remote is ready for use. The app shows a "Device added successfully" screen, allowing you to name the device and assign it to rooms like "Living Room", "Bedroom", "Dining Room", "Kitchen", "Study Room".

CONNECTING AN IR REMOTE CONTROLLED DEVICE

  1. To connect an IR remote controlled device to the Smart Wi-Fi Remote, click on your Smart Wi-Fi Remote under "All devices” on your home page. Then click on "Add Remote Control". The app shows the Smart Wi-Fi Remote listed as "Online" on the home screen, and a subsequent screen with a large "+" button labeled "Add Remote Control".
  2. Then select what kind of device you would like to add. If you would like to set up a TV, press the TV button. The app displays a list of device types to add, such as "STB", "TV", "Air Conditioner", "TV Box", "Fan", "DVD", and "DIY".
  3. Then select the brand of the device you are adding. The Smart Wi-Fi Remote will automatically connect to your device. The app shows a search bar and a list of TV brands like "Skyworth", "TCL", "Hisense", "Changhong", "Konka", "Haier", "Samsung", "LETV", "LG", "10moons", "3S Digital".
  4. You'll then see a remote layout. Scroll through button layouts at the bottom of the page until you find the one you like. Then press "select this one”. The app displays a virtual remote control with buttons like power, channel up/down, volume up/down, back, OK, and number pad.
  5. Continue steps 8-11 to add more devices if desired. All added remotes can be viewed in the app by clicking the Smart Wi-Fi Remote from your home screen.

REMOVE A DEVICE

  1. From the home screen, click on the device you would like to remove.
  2. Then click on the edit symbol (pencil icon) on the top right of the screen.
  3. From there, click the "Remove Device" button at the bottom of the screen. The app displays a "More" screen with options like "Check Device Network", "Supported Third-party Control" (Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant), "Share Device", "Create Group", "Device Information", "Feedback", "Add to Home Screen", "Check for Firmware Update", and "Remove Device", "Restore Factory Setting".

HOW TO CONTROL THE SMART WI-FI REMOTE WITH AMAZON ALEXA

Ensure your Alexa app is connected to your Amazon Echo and both work successfully on your Wi-Fi home network.

  1. Step A: Log into your Alexa app, tap the top left corner (menu icon), and tap “Skills”. The Alexa app menu shows options like "Add Device", "Lists", "Reminders & Alarms", "Contacts", "Routines", "Things to Try", "Skills & Games", "Activity", "Help & Feedback", "Settings".
  2. Step B: Type "Brookstone Smart” in the search results and tap the "enable” button. The Alexa app search results show "Brookstone Smart" with a "Smart Home" category and an "ENABLE TO USE" button.
  3. Step C: Enter your account info for the "Brookstone Smart" app, tap "Link Now”, then tap "Authorize” on the next page to link your Brookstone Smart account to Alexa. The app displays a login screen for Brookstone Smart and an authorization screen for Alexa to access your public profile and control devices.
  4. Step D: Once your Brookstone Smart account is successfully linked to Alexa, the next page will pop up. Tap "Done" on the top left corner, then tap "Discover Devices".
  5. Step E: Wait a few seconds for Alexa to detect the Smart Wi-Fi Remote from the Brookstone Smart app. The device named “Smart Wi-Fi Remote" will be paired to the Alexa app from the "Brookstone Smart" app. If the Brookstone Smart account is already linked, Alexa will automatically detect the new device. To rename the device, press "Devices" in the bottom right corner, then "All Devices” at the top right. On the next page, scroll down to "Smart Wi-Fi Remote" and press "Edit Name”. You can now name it as desired. The Alexa app shows a "Devices" screen with categories like "Lights", "Plugs", "Switches", "All Devices", and a list of discovered devices including "Smart WiFi Remote".
  6. Step F: Once you can control your IR remote controlled devices via Amazon Alexa, any device connected to the Smart Wi-Fi Remote will react to voice commands.

    For example, if a TV remote is connected to the Smart Wi-Fi Remote, try these commands:

    • “Alexa, turn on the TV”
    • “Alexa, turn off the TV”

    Note: The controlled device name is the name given in the "Brookstone Smart" app after adding the remote to the Smart Wi-Fi Remote.

HOW TO CONTROL THE SMART WI-FI REMOTE WITH GOOGLE ASSISTANT

  1. Pair the Smart Wi-Fi Remote with the Brookstone Smart App and name it with an easily recognizable name.
  2. Download the Google Home App and register and log in with your Google account info.
  3. Step A: Once logged into the Google Home App, buttons will appear at the top to connect your Brookstone Smart account to the Google Home App. The Google Home app displays a "Home" screen with a "Connect Brookstone Smart" button.
  4. Step B: Tap the "Connect Brookstone Smart" button to link your account with the Google Assistant.
  5. Step C: Enter your account info for the "Brookstone Smart" app, tap "Link now", then tap "Authorize" on the next page to link your Brookstone Smart account to the Google Assistant. The app displays a login screen for Brookstone Smart and an authorization screen for Google Assistant to access your public profile and control devices.
  6. Step D: The Google Assistant will find the device named "Smart Wi-Fi Remote" on this page. You can now view and control your IR remote controlled devices connected to the Smart Wi-Fi Remote with the Google Home App. The Google Home app displays a screen for the "TV" device with an on/off toggle.
  7. Step E: You can control your IR remote controlled devices connected to the Smart Wi-Fi Remote with the Google Assistant via voice commands.

    For example, if a TV remote is connected to the Smart Wi-Fi Remote, try these commands:

    • “Hey Google, turn on the TV”
    • “Hey Google, turn off the TV”

    Note: The controlled device name is the name given in the "Brookstone Smart" app after adding the remote to the Smart Wi-Fi Remote.
