IMPORTANT NOTES
- Do not use control with exhaust fans.
- CAUTION: To avoid overheating and possible damage to other equipment, do not use to control receptacles, lighting, fluorescent lighting fixtures, or transformer-supplied appliances.
- Do not use control with a fan and light that operate with the same switch.
- When no "grounding means" exists within the wallbox for an existing switch or dimmer, the National Electrical Code® (NEC®) allows a switch/dimmer to be installed as a replacement as long as: 1) a nonmetallic, noncombustible faceplate is used with nonmetallic attachment screws or 2) the circuit is protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter. Lutron wallplates meet this requirement.
- The use of ceiling fan controls on circuits protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) may result in nuisance tripping and is not recommended.
- Use control with a ceiling paddle fan only. Use only one ceiling paddle fan per control.
- For new installations, wire a test switch before installing the control.
- Set multi-speed fans to their highest setting before installing controls.
- Use only one control in a 3-way circuit.
- Install in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
- Clean control with a soft damp cloth only. Do not use any chemical cleaners.
- Not for use with DC motor fans.
Installation Steps
1. Set fan to highest speed
NOTE: For ceiling-mounted, paddle fans only.
2. Turn power OFF at circuit breaker
⚠️ WARNING: SHOCK HAZARD. May result in serious injury or death. Turn off power at circuit breaker or fuse before installing.
[ON/OFF switch]
3. Remove side sections (if ganging devices)
When combining controls in one wallbox, remove all inner side sections before wiring (see below). Use pliers to bend each side section back and forth until it breaks off. No derating is required.
- Do Not Remove Outside Sections
- Each Control Has Inside Sections Removed
- Middle Control Has Two Side Sections Removed
Bend back and forth
4. Determine wiring type (ONLY ONE FAN CAN BE USED PER CONTROL)
For fans switched from one location:
Diagram Description: Shows a wallbox with connections. A ground wire (bare or green) is connected to the ground screw. A line/hot wire (black) is shown. A control wire (red) is shown. A red/white wire is capped off (no connection).
For fans switched from two locations:
4B NOTE: Only one control can be used per circuit.
Diagram Description: Shows a wallbox with connections. A ground wire (bare or green) is connected to the ground screw. A line/hot wire (black) is shown. A marked wire (red/white) is shown. A red wire is capped off (no connection).
[different-colored screw]
IMPORTANT: Tag or mark the common wire. This is usually connected to a darker (or different) colored screw than the others. This does NOT include the ground screw.
5. Remove existing switch and connect the new fan control (appropriately choose ONE of the diagrams below)
For fans switched from one location:
Diagram Description: Shows the Lutron control wiring.
- Green wire connects to Ground wire (bare or green).
- Black wire connects to Line/Hot.
- Red wire connects to Fan.
- Red/White wire is capped off (No connection).
- Neutral wire connects to Neutral.
[insert and twist to tighten]
For fans switched from two locations:
Diagram Description: Shows the Lutron control wiring and a 3-way switch.
- Lutron Control:
- Green wire connects to Ground wire (bare or green).
- Black wire connects to Line/Hot.
- Red wire connects to the 3-way switch's marked wire (traveler).
- Red/White wire connects to Fan.
- Neutral wire connects to Neutral.
[insert and twist to tighten]
[marked wire]
6. Mount the control using the provided screws
7. Install the faceplate (not included)
8. Turn power ON at circuit breaker
[ON/OFF switch]
9. Installation is complete!
