HomeWorks QS Wired Maestro Designer Local Controls

Product Specifications

Introduction

HomeWorks QS Wired Maestro local controls function similarly to standard dimmers and switches but can be integrated into a lighting control system. They are ideal for locations requiring control of single lighting circuits or single ceiling paddle fans. The dimmers offer advanced features like fade on/fade off, delayed long fade to off, and rapid full on. All local controls include a Front Accessible Service Switch (FASS) for safe lamp replacement and can be installed in single-pole or multi-location setups. Remote dimmers/switches are also available. Lutron Designer (Claro or Satin Colors) wallplates or compatible designer-style wallplates are recommended and sold separately. Wallplates snap on without visible attachment means. Color change kits are supported for most models.

Dimensions

All dimensions are shown in inches (mm).

Front View: Height: 4¹⁄₁₆ in (119 mm), Width: 2¹⁵⁄₁₆ in (75 mm).

Side Views: Depth varies slightly. Common side dimensions include a width of 5⁄₁₆ in (8 mm) and depths of 1¹⁄₈ in (30 mm) or 1¹⁄₁₆ in (43 mm) for -2ANF models, and 1³⁄₈ in (35 mm) for -5NE models.

Mounting and Derating

Mounting and Parts Identification: The system includes a control unit, wallbox, mounting screws, wallplate adapter, and wallplate. The wallplate adapter and wallplate are purchased separately.

Ganging and Derating: When combining controls in the same wallbox, derating is required (refer to Load Type and Capacity). No derating is needed for remote dimmers, switches, or fan speed controls. The HWD-8ANS model has fins that may need removal for multigang installations: outside fins on end controls should not be removed, while inside fins on middle controls should be removed.

Notes on Load Types:

  • ¹ Dimmer Load Types (-6D, -6ND, -10D, -10ND) are for permanently installed incandescent, magnetic low-voltage, or tungsten halogen loads only. Do not control receptacles or motor-operated appliances.
  • ² Low-Voltage Applications: Use with magnetic (core and coil) low-voltage transformers. Not for electronic (solid-state) transformers. For electronic transformers, use HWD-5NE. Operation with inoperative lamps can cause transformer overheating; replace lamps promptly and use transformers with thermal protection.
  • ³ Compatible with specific Lutron power boosters and load interfaces (e.g., HP-2, HP-4, HP-6, GRX-TVI, LUT-LBX, PHPM-PA, PHPM-SW, PHPM-3F).
  • ⁴ Refer to www.lutron/ledtool for LED lamp/fixture compatibility and Application Note 487 for minimum/maximum loading.
  • ⁵ HWD-8ANS is for lighting loads and motor loads up to 1/4 HP (5.8 A).
  • ⁶ HWD-2ANF is for single paddle-type ceiling fans (permanent split-capacitor motor). Use the fan's pull chain for the highest speed setting. Do not use with shaded-pole motors, fans with integrated controls, other motor appliances, lighting loads, or fan lighting kits. See http://resi.lutron.com/Portals/3/Product/AppNotes/048-217a_prelim.pdf for more information.

Operation

Dimmer: Status LEDs indicate light level (glow softly as night light when off). Dimming rocker adjusts brightness. Tapswitch turns lights on/off. FASS switch is for service.

Switch: Status LED indicates load status (glows softly as night light when off). Tapswitch turns lights/motors on/off. FASS switch is for service.

Fan Speed Control: Status LEDs indicate speed level (glow softly as night light when fan is off). Speed control rocker adjusts fan speed. Tapswitch turns fan on/off. FASS switch is for service.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: FASS - Front Accessible Service Switch: To replace a bulb, pull the FASS out fully on all controlling devices to remove power. Push the FASS back in fully to restore power after replacement.

Wiring

Dimmer communications wiring can be daisy-chained, in a star, or t-tap configuration. Each home run on a bus can be up to 500 ft (152 m) and support up to 8 devices. The total wire length per bus (all home runs) can be up to 1000 ft (305 m). Up to 48 HomeWorks Wired Maestro Local Controls can connect to a HomeWorks Dimmer Hub (HWI-H48). Up to four HWI-H48 Dimmer Hubs can be on each processor link configured as an H48 link.

Dimmer Side View: Illustrates IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 wiring to the Dimmer Hub or other Wired Maestro devices, showing connections within a wallbox, including butt splices and drywall.

IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 Wire Type: Requires one pair of twisted shielded 22 AWG to 18 AWG (0.5 mm² to 1.0 mm²) wire. This wiring is non-polarized.

HWI-H48 Dimmer Hub: The hub diagram shows multiple bus connections (BUS 1-6) and processor bus connections, indicating where up to 8 devices can be wired per bus.

Wiring Diagrams:

  • Wiring Diagram 1 (Single Location, No Neutral): For -6D and -10D models. Shows connections for Dimmer/Switch, Hot/Live, Load, Ground, and a violet/gray wire for communication. The blue terminal wire is unused and should be tightened.
  • Wiring Diagram 2 (Single Location, With Neutral): For -6ND, -10ND, -5NE, -2ANF, and -8ANS models. Shows connections for Dimmer/Switch/Fan Speed Control, Hot/Live, Load, Ground, Neutral, and violet/gray communication wires. The blue terminal wire is unused.
  • Wiring Diagram 3 (Multi-Location, No Neutral): For -6D and -10D with HQD-RD. Shows connections for Remote Dimmer/Dimmer, Hot/Live, Load, Ground, Neutral, and violet/gray communication wires. Notes that the dimmer can be in any circuit location.
  • Wiring Diagram 4 (Multi-Location, With Neutral): For -6ND, -10ND, -5NE, -2ANF with HQD-RD; and -8ANS with HQD-RS. Shows connections for Remote Dimmer/Switch, Dimmer/Switch/Fan Speed Control, Hot/Live, Load, Ground, Neutral, and violet/gray communication wires. Notes that neutral wire controls must be on the load side of a multi-location installation.
