SuperFish UVC Units: Test & Maintenance Guide
Introduction
This guide provides instructions for testing and maintaining SuperFish UVC units. It covers procedures for models with green and red locks, including lamp and quartz sleeve replacement, and essential safety precautions.
Note: Pictures in this document are from tests on a filter + UVC Topclear Kit 5000 (March 2024, green lock) and filter + UVC Topclear Kit 10000 (2021, red lock). The testing principle is consistent across most SuperFish UVC units.
Important Notes
- ALWAYS UNPLUG the electrical equipment of your pond before any maintenance.
- CAUTION: UVC radiation can cause severe, irreversible damage to your eyes. NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY into an operating UV lamp. Wear recommended PPE or perform tests using a non-UVC lamp.
- Proper equipment maintenance ensures long equipment life and warranty coverage.
- It is recommended to change the UVC lamp annually and clean the quartz sleeve with a descaling product (e.g., Pump & UVC Clean® or a solution of water and white vinegar). Also, check the state of the rings during cleaning.
1. UVC with Green Lock (>02/2024)
A. Access to the UVC Ballast
- Locate the filter top. Take out the grey cover by pulling it upwards.
- The UVC head is now visible within the UV housing.
- Pull up the green lock, then turn the UV head counterclockwise to detach it.
B. Taking out the Quartz and the Lamp
- With the UVC head removed from its housing, unscrew the small screw that secures the black ring.
- Unscrew the ring and slide it upwards towards the lamp. Keep all parts in a safe place to avoid losing them.
- Carefully remove the quartz sleeve from the UV block by pulling it upwards. A silicone sleeve seals the block, which might make removal slightly difficult. Take care not to break the glass.
- Carefully remove the UV lamp by pulling it upward. Remove the black ring and the metal ring.
C. Reassemble the UV Head
- Follow the steps in section B in reverse. Ensure everything is watertight.
- Replace the 2 rings (1 black and 1 metal) onto the new lamp.
- When tightening the black ring, ensure the notch for the screw aligns with the hole.
- Insert the UV block into its housing. With the safety catch (round magnet) facing you, insert the block slightly turned to the left, with the green lock on the right.
- Turn the block clockwise. You will feel resistance as the notches make contact. Press firmly on the block so its base is fully in contact with the housing, then continue turning until you hear a click.
- Push down the green lock to secure the UVC head.
D. Testing the UVC Operation
- All SuperFish UV-C systems have an eye safety device: UVC radiation is dangerous, so the lamp automatically switches off if the UV unit is not in its housing.
- An indicator light, visible from the outside, confirms if the lamp is working.
- Electrical operation of the ballast can be tested.
- Precautions: If possible, use a lighting lamp with the same base and wattage as the UV lamp for testing to avoid eye danger. Otherwise, use appropriate protection and do not look directly at the UV lamp.
Testing Procedure:
- Remove the UV unit from its housing.
- Connect the plug to the mains. The lamp will not light up due to the eye-safety feature.
- Place a magnet (e.g., an aquarium cleaning magnet) on the flat side of the ballast. The lamp will then light up.
- REMINDER: Protect your eyes from UVC radiation! NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT A UV LAMP.

2. UVC with Red Lock (<02/2024)
A. Access to the UV Ballast
- Locate the filter top. Take out the grey cover by pulling it upwards.
- The UVC head is now visible within the UV housing.
- Pull up the red lock, then turn the UV head counterclockwise to detach it.
B. Taking out the Quartz and the UV Lamp
- With the UVC head removed, unscrew the small screw that secures the clamping ring.
- Unscrew the ring and slide it upwards. Keep all parts in a safe place.
- Carefully remove the quartz by pulling it upwards.
- Carefully remove the UV lamp by pulling it upwards. Remove the 2 black rings at the top and base of the lamp.
- Keep the 2 black rings; the one at the base seals the electrical block.
C. Reassemble the UV Head
- Follow the steps in section B in reverse. Ensure the assembly is tightly sealed.
- Replace the 2 black rings on the new bulb.
- Tighten the black ring until resistance is felt, ensuring the screw hole is accessible through one of the ring's notches.
- Insert the UV block into its housing. With the safety catch (plastic nipple) facing you, insert the block slightly turned to the left, with the red lock on the right.
- Turn the block clockwise. You will feel resistance as the notches make contact. Press firmly on the block so its entire base is in contact with the housing, then continue turning to the right until you hear a click.
- Push down the red lock to secure the UVC head.
D. Testing the UVC Operation
- All SuperFish UV-C systems have an eye safety device: UVC radiation is dangerous, so the lamp automatically switches off if the UV unit is not in its housing.
- An indicator light, visible from the outside, confirms if the lamp is working.
- Electrical operation of the ballast can still be tested.
- Using a FLAT, NON-SLIP tool, press the membrane into the notch at the indicated point (refer to image). The lamp will light up.
- REMINDER: Protect your eyes from UVC radiation! NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT A UV LAMP.
