Important Notice: Compare this data with your water treatment needs. Test your water supply if necessary. Do not use with microbiologically unsafe water without adequate disinfection. Actual performance may vary based on local water conditions.
Before You Start
- Read all steps and guides carefully before installation and use.
- Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection.
- All plumbing must comply with local codes. Consult a licensed plumber if needed.
- The system operates on water pressures between 30 psi and 100 psi. Install a pressure reducing valve if your house pressure exceeds the maximum.
- Do not install the system outdoors or in extreme hot or cold temperatures. Water supply temperature must be between 40°F and 100°F. Do not install on hot water.
Dimensions
The water filtration unit has the following approximate dimensions: Height: 6-1/4 inches, Length: 11-1/4 inches, Width: 3-1/2 inches.
[Diagram showing the filter unit with dimensions labeled: 6-1/4" height, 11-1/4" length, 3-1/2" width.]
Parts of the System
- Filter system assembly
- Water supply fitting
- Filtered water faucet (for sink or countertop mounting)
- Color-coded 3/8" tubing
- Filter change drip tray
Materials and Tools Needed
- Slotted and Phillips screwdrivers
- Pliers and adjustable jaw wrench
- Tubing cutter
- Electric drill and 1-1/4" drill bit (if mounting hole is needed for the faucet)
IMPORTANT: To avoid damaging sinks (porcelain, stainless steel, granite), consult a qualified plumber or installer for drilling procedures.
Typical Undersink Installation
Locate the water filter housing on the cold water supply pipe under the kitchen or bathroom sink.
[Diagram illustrating an undersink installation: A sink is shown with hot and cold water lines. A shutoff valve is on the cold line. A water supply fitting connects to the shutoff valve, with yellow tubing (WATER IN) going to the filter housing and blue tubing (WATER OUT) going to a filtered water faucet. A filter change drip tray is positioned below the housing.]
Installation Instructions
Step A - Install Cold Water Supply Fitting
Check and comply with local plumbing codes. Install the water supply fitting to ensure a leak-tight connection for the 3/8" tubing.
Included Water Supply Fitting:
- Close the cold water shutoff valve and open a faucet to relieve pressure.
- Disconnect the existing cold water line from the shutoff valve.
- Ensure the gasket is inside the water supply fitting's female threaded portion.
- Install the water supply fitting onto the cold water shutoff valve where the old line was removed. Hand tighten, avoiding cross-threading or overtightening.
- Connect the existing cold water line to the male threaded portion of the fitting. Hand tighten, avoiding cross-threading or overtightening.
Optional Pipe Fittings (compression type shown):
Turn off water supply and open a faucet to drain. Install a fitting on the cold water pipe to adapt 3/8" OD tubing. Use pipe joint compound or thread sealing tape on threaded fittings.
[Diagram showing two water supply connection methods: Figure 3A illustrates the included fitting connecting to a shutoff valve with 3/8" tubing to the filter inlet. Figure 3B shows an optional compression fitting connection with insert and ferrule.]
Step B - Make Hole For Filtered Water Faucet
IMPORTANT: Consult a qualified plumber or installer for drilling procedures in porcelain, stainless steel, or granite to avoid damage.
- Select a location for the faucet: an existing sink spray attachment hole, the sink top, or the countertop next to the sink. Ensure there is room underneath for connections.
- If drilling is required, make a 1-1/4" diameter (minimum) hole for the faucet.
Step C - Install Faucet
- Insert one end of the 3/8" blue tubing into the push-in fitting on the bottom of the faucet. Push tubing fully into the fitting (3/4" engagement).
- Feed the 3/8" tubing through the mounting hole. Slide toggle bolts through the hole and tighten screws to secure the base. Do not overtighten.
- Place the faucet onto the base and turn 1/4 clockwise to attach.
- Install the battery in the faucet base (refer to "Battery Change" section).
[Diagram illustrating faucet installation: A faucet is shown with blue tubing. Below it, exploded view shows the faucet base, rubber washer, toggle bolt, and screw connecting to a hole in the sink or countertop.]
Step D - Make Tubing Connections
- Measure and cut a length of 3/8" tubing to connect the supply fitting to the filter system inlet. Cut tubing ends square.
- Insert tubing fully into the supply fitting and filter inlet fitting. Tug gently to ensure a secure connection.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 to connect tubing from the faucet to the filter system outlet.
Tubing Connection (Push-in Fittings):
- Use a box cutter or knife to cut tubing ends square.
- Inspect the cut end (approx. 1") for nicks, scratches, or rough spots. Recut if necessary.
- Push tubing through the collet and fully into the fitting (3/4" engagement).
[Diagrams showing correct and incorrect tubing connections: Figure 5 illustrates tubing cut square and fully engaged (3/4"), contrasted with an incorrectly partially engaged tube. Figure 6 shows how to disconnect tubing by pressing the collet.]
Step E - Turn On Water, Check for Leaks and Rinse Carbon Fines
- Open the shutoff valve(s) closed during installation.
- Open the sink faucet and filtered water faucet to purge air. Once water runs smoothly without bubbles or spurting, close faucets and check for leaks.
- Open the filtered water faucet and let water run for 10 minutes to rinse out carbon fines.
Filter Cartridges
Filter Cartridge Life
Taste and Odor Cartridges contain activated carbon. When new, flush the system by opening the filtered water faucet until fine carbon particles (fines) are no longer visible, or for approximately 10 minutes. It is recommended to replace the battery and filter cartridges every six months.
Cartridge life depends on water usage and the amount of sediment, taste, or odor in the water. You will know it's time to replace a cartridge when you notice the return of the unwanted substance in your water.
The Whirlpool WHADUS5 system with WHEEDF replacement element pack is rated for 270 gallons (1,022 liters) at a service flow of 0.5 gallons per minute.

Filter Cartridge Replacement
- Turn filter cartridges counterclockwise to remove them from the manifold.
- Dispose of used cartridges properly.
- Install new cartridges by turning them clockwise onto the manifold.
- Replace the timer battery (see "Battery Change" section).
[Diagram showing filter cartridges being turned counterclockwise to remove and clockwise to attach to the manifold.]
Faucet Electronics
Faucet Timer
The faucet base contains a battery-operated 6-month timer. An amber LED indicator on the faucet base flashes continuously after 6 months, signaling the need to replace the battery and filters.
Battery Change
- Loosen the screw on the right side of the faucet base.
- Press the battery housing upwards from the base until it releases.
- Replace the battery (CR 2032 or equivalent), ensuring the positive (+) side faces the back of the holder.
- Upon first replacement, the light flashes six times, indicating a full charge and the start of the 6-month cycle. Repeated two-time flashes indicate a weak battery.
- Re-install the battery housing and tighten the mounting screw.
