Before You Begin

  • Before installing and using the kitchen and bath water filtration system, carefully read all steps and guidelines. Follow all steps exactly to achieve correct installation. Reading this manual will also help you obtain all the benefits of the filtration system.
  • If the water is microbiologically impure or its quality is unknown, do not use the system without adequate disinfection before or after the unit. This system has been certified for cyst reduction and can be used with disinfected water that may contain filterable cysts.
  • All plumbing installation must be done in compliance with local codes and requirements. In the State of Massachusetts, plumbing codes 248 CMR 3.00 and 10.00 must be followed. Consult a licensed plumber.
  • The kitchen and bath water filtration system operates with water pressures from 30 PSI (minimum) to 100 PSI (maximum), or 207 to 689 kPa. If your home's water pressure exceeds the maximum, install a pressure-reducing valve on the water supply line to the filtration system.
  • Do not install the filtration system outdoors or under extremely hot or cold temperatures. The water supply temperature to the filtration system should be between 40 and 100 °F (4 and 38 °C). Do not install it on hot water pipes.

Typical Under-Sink Installation

Locate the water filter assembly on the cold water supply line, under the kitchen or bathroom sink, to filter cold water. Refer to the following diagram.

Figure 2 illustrates a typical under-sink setup. It shows the filtered water faucet, the sink (FREGADERO), the cold water supply line (tubería de suministro de agua fría) with a shut-off valve (válvula de paso), the filter's inlet (ENTRADA) and outlet (SALIDA), and the connection to the faucet. The inlet connection has a yellow collar, and the outlet has a blue collar. The diagram notes that a minimum clearance of 1-1/2 inches is required below the system to remove the filter cartridge for replacement.

Installation Instructions

Step A - Install Water Supply Fittings

When planning the installation, consult and comply with local plumbing codes, then install the fittings to connect the kitchen and bath filter to the sink's cold water supply line. Included fittings (9/16-24 thread) and 3/8 inch OD tubing provide connections to and from the kitchen and bath filter inlet and outlet. Figure 3 illustrates a typical connection with the included water supply fittings.

  1. Close the sink's shut-off valve(s) or another shut-off valve upstream from where you will install the filter, and open the faucets to relieve pressure in the sink's cold water supply line.
  2. Identify the tubing connecting the cold water shut-off valve to the sink faucet. This tubing is usually a flexible hose. Disconnect the nut connecting this tubing to the cold water shut-off valve. Use a bucket to collect any water draining from this tubing.
  3. Find a piece of the supplied 3/8 inch tubing, along with the included compression nut, ferrule, and tube insert. (See Figure 3). Assemble the parts onto the tubing as shown in Figure 3, and screw the compression nut onto the cold water shut-off valve. Tighten it to create a leak-proof connection.
  4. Identify the water supply adapter (included) and install it onto the supply tubing nut you disconnected in Step 2. Refer to Figure 3.
  5. Push the stem of the water supply adapter into one end of the supplied union connector. (See Figure 3). When tightening the stem, ensure it is fully seated.

Figure 3 shows the connection details: 3/8 inch tubing to the filter inlet (ENTRADA), compression nut, ferrule, insert, thread seal tape (use on threads), sink (FREGADERO), filtered water faucet (grifo de agua filtrada), flexible connection to faucet, inlet (ENTRADA) with yellow collar on push-to-connect fitting, outlet (SALIDA) with blue collar on push-to-connect fitting, cold water shut-off valve (válvula de paso de agua fría), water supply adapter (adaptador para suministro de agua), union connector (conector de unión), and 3/8 inch tubing from the filter outlet (SALIDA). The cold water shut-off valve is shown connected to the filter system assembly.

Step B - Make Tube Connections

  1. Find the unused 3/8 inch tubing. Lay it between the union connector and the filter system outlet. (See Figures 2 and 3). Measure with some slack and cut it. Cut the tubing ends at a right angle.
  2. Insert the tubing fully into the union connector and the filter system outlet. Pull on the tubing to ensure it is securely attached to the fittings.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to connect the tubing installed on the cold water shut-off valve to the filter system inlet.

Tubing Connection (All Push-to-Connect Fittings): The system includes push-to-connect fittings for quick tubing connections. When working with the fittings, follow these guidelines:

Connect the Tubing:

  1. Use a tube cutter to cut the tubing end at a right angle.
  2. Inspect the tube end (approximately 1 inch or 25 mm) to ensure it is round and smooth, without nicks, scratches, or any uneven sections. If necessary, recut the tube.
  3. Slide the tubing through the collar and insert it fully into the fitting. Full engagement is 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) of the tube portion inside the fitting.

Figure 4 illustrates correct and incorrect tubing connections. A correct connection shows a round, smooth tube end inserted 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) into the fitting. An incorrect connection shows partial insertion.

To Disconnect Tubing:

  1. Push the collar inward and hold it with a finger while pulling the tubing out.

Figure 5 shows the disconnection process: push the collar (apretar para retirar el tubo) inward while pulling the tube.

Step C - Turn on Water, Check for Leaks, and Flush Carbon Fines

  1. Open the supply valve(s) that you closed at the start of this installation.
  2. Open the filtered water faucet to purge air from the system. When the water runs smoothly, without bubbles or intermittent spurts, close the faucet and check the installation for leaks.
  3. Open the filtered water faucet and let the water run for 20 minutes to flush out carbon fines.

Filter Cartridges

Filter Cartridge Lifespan

Filter Cartridges: A filter cartridge contains activated carbon. When installing new cartridges, open the filtered water faucet and let the unit flush out carbon fines. Let the water run for 20 minutes. It is recommended to replace the filter cartridge every 6 months of use. Various variables will determine a cartridge's lifespan, including:

  1. How much water is used, and
  2. How much sediment, odor, or taste, or other undesirable substances are present in the water.

Use the following information as a guide. However, regardless of the type of cartridges you use, you will know it is time to replace them when you first notice sediment, taste, or odor in the water, or when the flow decreases or stops.

The Whirlpool® kitchen and bath water filtration system, model WHAFFS, with WHAFFF replacement element, meets NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53 for specific performance claims, which have been verified and substantiated by test data. The rated capacity of this system is 2000 gallons (7570 liters) at a nominal service flow rate of 1.85 gallons per minute (7.0 liters per minute).

Filter Cartridge Replacement

NOTE: It is not necessary to close the water shut-off valve when replacing the filter cartridge.

  1. Turn the filter cartridge counter-clockwise to remove it from the filter head.
  2. Dispose of the used cartridge properly.
  3. Install the new cartridge. Turn the cartridge clockwise to attach it to the filter head.

Filter Cartridges: Filter cartridges contain a black powder that is activated carbon. When installing new cartridges, open the filtered water faucet and let the unit flush out carbon fines. Let the water run for 20 minutes.

Figure 6 shows the filter cartridge replacement. It depicts turning the filter cartridge to the left (counter-clockwise) to remove it from the filter head, and turning it to the right (clockwise) to attach it to the head.

System Troubleshooting
