2. Getting Started and Setting Up the Coffee Machine
2.1 Filter Installation
Why Install a Filter Cartridge?
The KRUPS Claris water filter cartridge helps improve coffee taste, reduce limescale buildup, and decrease maintenance needs. To extend the appliance's lifespan, using a filter cartridge is recommended. This accessory is available on the KRUPS.ru website.
When to Replace the CLARIS Water Filtration System Cartridge?
- Two months after installation.
- When installing, turn the gray ring at the top of the filter cartridge so that the installation date plus two months is displayed.
Installing the CLARIS Water Filtration System Cartridge
- The appliance must be plugged in and turned on.
- The cartridge is installed in the water tank.
- Install the cartridge with the numbered ring facing upwards.
- Use the special black adapter supplied with the cartridge to install and screw in the cartridge.
- On the screen, press and hold CLEAN MODE for 3 seconds. A sound signal will indicate entry into the "Filter Installation" menu.
- Place a container under the spouts.
- The START/STOP button will flash, and the RINSE indicator will light up.
- Press START/STOP to begin using the filter.
- During installation, the light bar will flash red.
- Upon completion of installation, the light bar will turn solid white again.
2.2 Grinder: Adjusting the Grind Setting
Why Adjust the Grind Setting?
Adjusting the grind setting is necessary when changing coffee bean types or to adjust coffee strength. The grind setting allows for proper grinding of different types of coffee beans:
- For strongly roasted beans with a high oil content, a coarser grind is required.
- Lightly roasted beans are drier and require a finer grind.
Roast Level
Very Intense (French Dark) | Intense (French) | Strong (French Light) | Medium (Amber) | Light (Blond) |
---|---|---|---|---|
[Grind setting 5 icon] | [Grind setting 4 icon] | [Grind setting 3 icon] | [Grind setting 2 icon] | [Grind setting 1 icon] |
Very Fine | Fine | Medium | Coarse | Very Coarse |
Additionally, for the same coffee, the grind setting affects the beverage's aroma: the finer the grind, the more intense the taste.
Adjusting the Grind Setting
Turn the adjustment dial located in the bean container according to the type of coffee beans and the desired taste intensity (5 levels as shown above). This adjustment should be made while the grinder is running, one notch at a time. After preparing coffee at least three times, you will notice a difference in taste.
Attention! It is not recommended to use oily or caramelized beans, as they can damage the grinder and cause system malfunctions.

Tips and Advice
The coffee machine uses the last used settings for each beverage selection. You can increase the volume of each beverage during preparation. The appliance automatically performs the following steps to prepare a beverage:
- Grinding coffee beans
- Tamping ground coffee
- Pre-wetting (a few drops of coffee may fall into the cup at this stage)
- Coffee passing through the filter
3.1 Milk Beverages and Hot Water
Tips and Advice
For frothing milk, it is recommended to use ultra-pasteurized milk kept refrigerated (3-5 °C).
Using special types of milk (concentrated, raw, fermented, enriched) or plant-based milk (almond, oat, soy, etc.) may yield less satisfactory results in terms of foam quality and quantity. If a milk carton (plastic or glass) has been opened, store it in the refrigerator at 4 °C or below. Milk can typically be stored for 5-7 days.
Frothing Milk with the Steam Nozzle
The steam nozzle is used for frothing milk, for example, to prepare cappuccino or latte. As steaming requires a higher temperature than espresso preparation, the appliance includes an additional steam preheating phase.
Preparing two cups simultaneously is not possible – the X2 function is not available.
Important! There are two preheating stages: one for the coffee machine, one for the steam.
The START/STOP indicator will flash, signaling the end of the appliance's preheating. Press START/STOP again to start steaming.
If START/STOP is not pressed within two minutes of preheating, the coffee machine will return to its initial state.
For information on preparing milk beverages, see section 5 of the Quick Start Guide.
Caution! Be careful to avoid burns.
Important! Steaming stops automatically based on the previously selected beverage volume. If you have enough frothed milk, you can press START/STOP to stop steaming before the cycle ends.
Cleaning the Steam Nozzle
Important! To achieve consistent foam, it is recommended to thoroughly clean the steam nozzle AFTER EACH USE. Do not wash the steam nozzle in a dishwasher. We also recommend cleaning the steam nozzle if it has not been used for an extended period (more than two days).
Caution! The steam nozzle may be hot after use; wait a few minutes before touching it.
To thoroughly clean the steam nozzle, you can remove it. Clean it with water, a small amount of non-abrasive detergent, and a brush. For information on cleaning the steam nozzle, see section 6 of the Quick Start Guide.
- To remove milk residue from the steam nozzle, place a container under the nozzle and start hot water dispensing. Then, wipe the nozzle with a clean microfiber cloth.
- If steam is not released, the nozzle may be clogged: clean it using the provided needle. For information on cleaning the steam nozzle, see section 6 of the Quick Start Guide.
Dispensing Hot Water
- Place a cup under the steam nozzle.
- Press Hot Water.
- You can adjust the beverage volume as desired. However, preparing two cups simultaneously is not possible – the X2 function is unavailable.
- Press START/STOP. The coffee machine will heat up (the light bar will flash), and then dispense hot water.
- The "Favorite Drinks" function is available. For information on saving a favorite drink recipe, see section 3 of the Quick Start Guide.

6. Answers to Questions
Operation
- Appliance malfunction, software freeze, OR all indicators flashing.
Turn off the coffee machine and unplug it from the power outlet. Remove the filter cartridge installed in the water tank, wait 1 minute, plug the appliance back in, and restart it.
- The appliance does not turn on after pressing the power button.
Check the fuses and the electrical outlet. Ensure both power plugs are correctly connected.
- Power failure during preparation.
Upon restarting, the appliance will perform an automatic restart.
- The grinder runs empty.
This is normal if it happens rarely, and if the coffee beans in the container have run out or are low.
Coffee beans remaining in the container:
- The coffee may contain too much oil and not be processed properly by the grinder. You can try to push the beans down and see if operation resumes. However, it is recommended to change the coffee (see details on coffee bean types).
- If this is your usual coffee, with which you have not had problems before, contact KRUPS customer service.
Usage
- The grinder makes an unusual noise.
Most likely, there are foreign particles in the grinder. Try cleaning it with a vacuum cleaner or contact KRUPS customer service.
- Water is found under the appliance.
Wait 15 seconds after preparing coffee before removing the drip tray to allow the coffee machine to correctly complete the cycle.
Ensure the drip tray is correctly installed in the coffee machine. It should always be in place, even when the appliance is not in use.
Check that the drip tray is not full.
Grind Setting Adjustment
- The grind adjustment switch may be difficult to turn. Turn the grind adjustment switch only while the grinder is running.
- The appliance did not prepare coffee.
A problem was detected during preparation. The appliance will automatically restart and be ready for a new cycle.
- Ground coffee was used instead of coffee beans.
Use a vacuum cleaner to remove ground coffee from the coffee bean container.
- Water is dispensed from the spouts after the coffee machine is turned off.
This is normal. It is an automatic rinse to clean the spouts. You can disable it in the coffee machine settings by disabling the "Automatic Rinse" option.
Steam and Milk
- No steam is released.
a. If no steam is released or it is not released properly during the first use of the steam cycle, follow these steps:
- Ensure the steam nozzle is not clogged. For information on cleaning the steam nozzle, see section 6 of the Quick Start Guide.
- If the steam nozzle is not clogged, perform the following steps once: Drain the water from the tank and temporarily remove the Claris water filter cartridge. Fill the tank with mineral water with high calcium content (> 100 mg/L) and perform several steam dispensing cycles (5 to 10 cycles) into a container until a continuous steam flow is achieved. Reinstall the cartridge in the tank.
b. The steam nozzle has been used before.
- Ensure the steam nozzle is not clogged. For information on cleaning the steam nozzle, see section 6 of the Quick Start Guide.
- If it still does not work after performing the above steps, contact KRUPS customer service.
2) Water or steam is dispensed improperly from the steam nozzle.
- Ensure the steam nozzle is correctly installed on the mounting unit and that the mounting unit is securely attached to the steam outlet opening.
- A few drops may pass through the steam nozzle at the beginning or end of preparation.
Maintenance
- The coffee machine does not prompt for descaling.
The descaling cycle is prompted after preparing a large number of beverages using steam or hot water. If you only prepare coffee, descaling is rarely required.
- Ground coffee has entered the drip tray.
A small amount of ground coffee may enter the drip tray. The coffee machine's design is intended to remove excess ground coffee, keeping the filtration area clean.
- The indicator light for coffee grounds continues to glow after emptying the container.
Reinstall the coffee grounds container.
- The indicator light for the water tank continues to glow after filling the water tank.
Ensure the water tank is correctly installed in the appliance. The float in the lower part of the tank should move freely. Check and reposition the float if necessary.
- During the initial descaling phase, no water is dispensed from the spouts.
This is normal. Only when a large amount of limescale has accumulated will the coffee machine dispense water from the spouts.
Beverages
- Coffee dispenses too slowly.
- Turn the grind setting switch to the right to select a coarser grind (depending on the type of coffee used).
- Perform one or more rinse cycles.
- Replace the Claris water filter cartridge.
- Coffee is too weak or not strong enough.
- Ensure the coffee bean container contains coffee and is correctly installed.
- Avoid using oily, caramelized, or flavored coffees that are not processed properly by the coffee machine.
- Reduce the volume and increase the coffee strength using the coffee strength function. Turn the grind setting switch to set a finer grind. Prepare the beverage in two cycles using the two-cup preparation function.
- Coffee or espresso is not hot enough.
Increase the coffee temperature in the coffee machine settings. Before preparing the beverage, warm the cup by rinsing it in hot water. Before preparing coffee, the preparation system must be rinsed.
- Clean water is dispensed from the spout before each coffee delivery.
During recipe initiation, pre-wetting occurs, which may result in a small amount of water dispensing from the spout.
If any of the problems described above persist, contact KRUPS customer service.
