2. First Steps and Appliance Installation

Getting Started

Place the machine on a stable, horizontal, clean, and dry work surface. Before first use, the machine will fill its water circuits through a priming process. Preheating and automatic rinsing will occur.

For more information on the initial start-up, refer to "Quick Guide" Section 1.

Your appliance has been tested. Despite cleaning efforts, coffee residues may be present in the grinder or drip tray. You may also notice dust from protective material. It is recommended to clean the machine thoroughly with a cloth before first use.

Never use a damaged appliance.

Tips and Advice

Water

Water quality significantly impacts aroma. Lime and chlorine can alter coffee taste. For optimal flavor, use fresh, clear water, a Claris Aqua-Filter System cartridge, or bottled water with dry residue below 800 mg/l.

Refer to the "FILTER AND WATER HARDNESS" section.

Cup

For hot beverages, pre-warm cups by rinsing them with hot water. Ensure the cup size is appropriate for the desired beverage volume.

Coffee Beans

Roasted coffee beans can lose aroma if not stored properly. Use beans within 2-3 days of opening and opt for 250g bags. Bean quality varies; Arabica beans offer fine, floral aromas, while Robusta beans are bitter, fuller-bodied, and higher in caffeine. Blending both types can achieve a balanced taste. Consult your coffee roaster for advice.

Avoid oily and caramelized beans, as they can damage the machine.

Grind size affects strength and crema quality. Finer grinds yield smoother crema. Adjust grind size according to your beverage preference.

2.1 Installing the Filter

Why Use a Filter Cartridge?

The KRUPS Claris Aqua-Filter System cartridge optimizes coffee taste, reduces limescale, and minimizes maintenance. For appliance longevity, using a filter cartridge is recommended. Available at KRUPS.com.

When to Change the Claris Aqua-Filter System Cartridge?

How to Install the Claris Aqua-Filter System Cartridge

2.2 Grinding: Adjusting the Grind

Why Adjust the Grind?

Adjust the grind based on coffee bean type or desired coffee strength. Different bean types may require different grind settings.

Roast Levels:

Grind setting also influences taste: finer grinds result in stronger flavors.

Grind Positions:

How to Adjust the Grind

Turn the adjustment dial in the coffee bean container to match your bean type and desired aroma strength (5 levels). This adjustment should be made while grinding, step by step. Noticeable taste differences appear after three preparations.

Vorsicht: Avoid oily or caramelized coffee beans, as they are difficult for the grinder to process and can damage the machine and sensor performance.

3. Preparing Beverages

The KRUPS Sensation/Sensation Milk allows you to prepare a wide variety of beverages to your taste. Preparations can be accessed directly via the control panel.

3.1 Milk Beverages and Hot Water

Tips and Advice

For frothy milk, use pasteurized milk (3-5°C). Special milks (microfiltered, raw, fermented, enriched) or plant-based milks (almond, oat, soy) may yield less satisfactory foam quality and quantity. Once opened, store the milk container (plastic or glass) in the refrigerator at max 4°C. Milk typically lasts 5-7 days.

Frothing Milk with the Steam Nozzle

The steam nozzle is used for frothing milk for beverages like Cappuccino or Latte. Steam generation requires higher temperatures, hence an additional preheating phase.

The "X2" function is not available for simultaneous preparation of two cups.

Wichtig: There are two preheating stages: one for the machine and one for steam. The ▶️ LED blinks to indicate readiness. Press ▶️ again to start steaming. If ▶️ is not pressed within two minutes of preheating, the machine returns to its initial state.

Refer to "Quick Guide" Section 5 for milk beverage preparation.

Achtung: Be careful to avoid burns.

Wichtig: Steam generation stops automatically based on the selected beverage volume. You can press ▶️ before the cycle ends if sufficient foam is produced.

Cleaning the Steam Nozzle

Wichtig: Clean the steam nozzle carefully after each use for consistent foam. Do not wash in a dishwasher. Clean periodically if not used for over two days.

Gefahr: The steam nozzle can be hot after use. Wait a few minutes before touching.

The entire steam nozzle can be removed for thorough cleaning with water, mild detergent, and a brush. Refer to "Quick Guide" Section 6 for details.

6. Answers to Your Questions

Operation

  1. Machine displays an error, software is frozen, OR all lights blink: Turn off the machine, unplug it, remove the filter cartridge (if installed), wait one minute, plug it back in, and restart.
  2. Appliance does not turn on after pressing the ON/OFF button: Check fuses and electrical outlets. Ensure both power plugs are securely inserted.
  3. Power outage during a cycle: The appliance will automatically reset when switched back on.
  4. Grinder runs empty: This is normal and occurs occasionally when the coffee bean container is low or empty. If beans are present, they might be too oily for the grinder. Try pushing them down. If the problem persists with previously used beans, contact KRUPS Customer Service.

Usage

  1. Grinder makes an unusual noise: Foreign objects are likely in the grinder. Try cleaning gently with a vacuum cleaner. If unsuccessful, contact KRUPS Customer Service.
  2. Water under the appliance: Wait 15 seconds after dispensing coffee before removing the drip tray to allow the machine to complete its cycle. Ensure the drip tray is correctly positioned and always attached, even when the machine is off. Check that the drip tray is not full.
  3. Grind adjustment dial is stiff: Turn the dial only when the grinder is operating.
  4. Appliance dispensed no coffee: A problem occurred during preparation. The appliance resets automatically and is ready for a new cycle.
  5. Used ground coffee instead of beans: Remove ground coffee from the bean container using a vacuum cleaner.
  6. Water flows from coffee spouts when the appliance is off: This is normal; it's an automatic rinse for cleaning the spouts. You can disable this in the settings under "Automatic Rinsing".

Steam and Milk

  1. No steam emerges:
    • First-time use or poor steam output: Ensure the steam nozzle is not blocked. Refer to "Quick Guide" Section 6 for cleaning. If not blocked, temporarily remove the Claris Aqua-Filter System cartridge and fill the water tank with mineral water (> 100 mg/l). Perform 5-10 consecutive steam cycles into a container until a constant steam jet is produced. Reinsert the cartridge.
    • Previously working steam nozzle: Ensure the steam nozzle is not blocked. Refer to "Quick Guide" Section 6 for cleaning. If steam output remains insufficient, contact KRUPS Customer Service.
  2. Water or steam exits the steam nozzle unusually: Check that the steam nozzle is correctly positioned on the fastening joint and that the joint is securely attached to the steam outlet. A few drops may emerge at the beginning or end of preparation.
  3. Steam may escape from the drip tray grille depending on the preparation type.
  4. Milk Maestro milk container no longer produces foam: Use fresh, low-fat, or whole milk (3°C to 6°C). Rinse the Milk Maestro milk container using the MILK RINSE program. Clean all parts in the dishwasher or by hand with soapy water and dry before reassembly.

Maintenance

  1. Appliance did not prompt for descaling: Descaling is necessary more often if you frequently prepare milk drinks with steam or hot water. Coffee-only preparation requires less frequent descaling.
  2. Coffee grounds in the drip tray: A small amount of ground coffee may enter the drip tray. The machine pumps out excess grounds to keep the flow zone clean.
  3. Control light ?️ lights up after emptying the coffee grounds container: Reinsert the coffee grounds container.
  4. Control light ? lights up after filling the water tank: Ensure the tank is correctly positioned. The float at the bottom of the tank must move freely. Check and release the float if necessary.
  5. No water exits the nozzles during the first phase of descaling: This is normal. Water is only dispensed if the machine is heavily clogged.

Beverages

  1. Coffee flows too slowly: Turn the grind adjustment knob to the right for coarser grounds (depending on coffee type). Perform one or more cleaning cycles. Replace the Claris Aqua-Filter System cartridge. Ensure the coffee bean container has beans and they move down properly. Avoid oily, caramelized, or flavored coffees that may not process correctly. Reduce quantity and increase preparation strength using the coffee strength function. Turn the grind knob for finer coffee. Prepare your drink using the 2-cup function in two cycles.
  2. Espresso or coffee is not hot enough: Increase coffee temperature in the appliance settings. Warm the cup with hot water before preparing the beverage. Perform a rinse cycle before coffee preparation.
  3. Clear water runs from the coffee spouts before each coffee: This is a preheating phase that may result in a small amount of water exiting the spouts.

If any of the above problems persist, contact KRUPS Customer Service.

Disposal

Wichtig: Your appliance contains materials that can be recovered or recycled. Help protect the environment! Bring the appliance to a collection point for disposal.
