2. First Steps and Device Installation
First Steps
Place the machine on a stable, horizontal, clean, and dry work surface. Before first use, the machine will perform a priming process to fill the water circuits. Preheating and automatic rinsing will occur.
For more information on the initial start-up, refer to the “Quick Guide” in Section 1.
Your device has been tested. Despite careful cleaning, coffee residues may be present. Dust may also have settled on the machine during transport. It is recommended to clean the machine thoroughly with a cloth before first use.
Never use a damaged device.
Tips and Advice
Water
Water quality significantly impacts aroma. Lime and chlorine can alter coffee taste. For optimal aroma, use fresh, clear water, a Claris Aqua-Filter System cartridge, or bottled water with low mineral content (under 800 mg/l).
See section “FILTER AND WATER HARDNESS”.
Cup
For hot beverages, use pre-warmed cups (rinsed with hot water) sized appropriately for the desired volume.
Coffee Beans
Roasted coffee beans lose aroma if not stored properly. Use beans within 2-3 days of opening and opt for 250g bags. Bean quality varies; Arabica beans offer fine, floral aromas, while Robusta beans are bitter, fuller-bodied, and higher in caffeine. Blending both can achieve a more balanced taste. Consult your coffee roaster for advice.
Avoid oily or caramelized beans as they can damage the machine.
The grind size affects aroma and crema quality. Finer grinds produce smoother crema. Adjust the grind to your preference.
2.1 Installing the Filter
Why Use a Filter Cartridge?
The KRUPS Claris Aqua-Filter System cartridge optimizes coffee taste, reduces limescale, and minimizes maintenance. For device longevity, using a filter cartridge is recommended. Available at KRUPS.com.
When to Change the Filter Cartridge?
- Two months after installation.
- When installing, turn the grey ring on the other end of the filter cartridge to indicate the installation date plus 2 months.
How to Install the Claris Aqua-Filter System Cartridge
- Ensure your device is plugged in and switched on.
- The cartridge must be inserted into the water tank.
- Position the cartridge with the numbered ring at the top.
- Use the black screw provided with the cartridge to secure its position.
- Press the ⚙️ button for 3 seconds. A beep confirms the addition in the “Installing Filter” menu.
- Place a container under the nozzles.
- The START/STOP button ▶️ blinks, and the light ⚪ illuminates.
- Press START/STOP to begin filter usage.
- The light strip blinks red during installation.
- Installation is complete when the light strip turns white again.
2.2 Grinder: Adjusting the Grind
Why Adjust the Grind?
Adjust the grind when changing coffee bean types or coffee strength. Different bean types require different grind settings:
- Strongly roasted, oily beans require a coarse grind.
- Lightly roasted beans are drier and need a fine grind.
Grind setting also affects taste: finer grinds result in stronger flavor.
Roast Levels: Very Strong (Dark French), Strong (French), Medium (Light French), Medium (amber), Light (pale).
Grind Positions: Position 1 (Extra Fine), Position 2 (Fine), Position 3 (Medium), Position 4 (Coarse), Position 5 (Extra Coarse).
How to Adjust the Grind
Turn the adjustment knob in the coffee bean container to match your bean type and desired aroma strength (5 levels). Adjust during grinding, step by step. Noticeable taste differences appear after three preparations.
Caution: Avoid oily or caramelized coffee beans, as they are difficult for the grinder to process and can damage the machine and sensor performance.
3. Preparing Beverages
The KRUPS Sensation/Sensation Milk allows for a wide variety of beverages. Preparations can be accessed directly via the control panel.

3.1 Milk Beverages and Hot Water
Tips and Advice
For frothy milk, use pasteurized H-milk from the refrigerator (3-5 °C). Special milks (microfiltered, raw, fermented, enriched) or plant-based milks (almond, oat, soy, etc.) may yield less satisfactory foam quality and quantity. Once opened, store the milk container (plastic or glass) in the refrigerator at max 4 °C. Milk typically keeps for five to seven days.
Frothing Milk with the Steam Nozzle
The steam nozzle froths milk for beverages like Cappuccino or Latte. Steam generation requires higher temperatures than espresso preparation, hence the additional preheating phase for steam.
The “X2” function is not available for simultaneous preparation of two cups.
Important: There are two preheating stages: one for the machine and one for steam. The START/STOP LED blinks to indicate preheating is complete. Press START/STOP again to begin steaming.
If the START/STOP button is not pressed within two minutes of preheating, the machine returns to its initial state.
For milk beverage preparation details, see “Quick Guide” in Section 5.
Caution: Be careful to avoid burns.
Important: Steam generation stops automatically based on the previously selected beverage volume. You can press START/STOP before the cycle ends if sufficient frothed milk is produced.
Cleaning the Steam Nozzle
Important: To ensure consistent foam, clean the steam nozzle carefully after each use. Do not wash it in the dishwasher. Clean the steam nozzle if it has not been used for more than two days.
Danger: The steam nozzle can be hot after use. Wait a few minutes before touching it.
The entire steam nozzle can be removed for thorough cleaning. Clean it with water, mild detergent, and a brush. For more details, see “Quick Guide” in Section 6.
- To remove milk residue, place a container under the nozzle, start hot water preparation, and wipe the nozzle with a clean, damp microfiber cloth.
- If no steam emerges, the nozzle may be blocked. Use the provided cleaning needle to clear the blockage. For more details, see “Quick Guide” in Section 6.
Preparing Hot Water
- Place a cup under the steam nozzle.
- Press “Hot Water”.
- You can adjust the beverage volume as desired. The “X2” function is not available.
- Press “START/STOP”. The machine will preheat (light strip blinks) before dispensing hot water.

6. Answers to Your Questions
Operation
- Machine displays an error, software is frozen, OR all lights are blinking.
Turn off the machine, unplug it from the power outlet, remove the filter cartridge (if installed), wait one minute, plug the machine back in, and restart it. - Device does not turn on after pressing the ON/OFF button.
Check the fuses and the power outlet of your electrical system. Ensure both power plugs are correctly inserted into the outlet. - Power failure during a cycle.
The device will automatically reset when switched back on. - The grinder runs empty.
This is normal and occurs occasionally when the coffee bean container has few or no beans. If there are still coffee beans in the container: The coffee may be too oily and not processed correctly by the machine. Try pushing the beans down to help the grinding process. It is advisable to change the coffee bean type. If you have used these coffee beans without problems before, contact your KRUPS customer service.
Usage
- The grinder makes an unusual noise.
There are likely foreign objects in the grinder. Try cleaning it carefully with a vacuum cleaner. If this does not work, contact KRUPS customer service. - Water is under the device.
Wait 15 seconds after dispensing coffee before removing the drip tray, allowing the machine to complete its cycle properly. Ensure the drip tray is correctly positioned in the machine. It must always be in place, even when the machine is not in use. Ensure the drip tray is not full. - The grind adjustment knob is difficult to turn.
Turn the grind adjustment knob only when the grinder is operating. - The device has not dispensed coffee.
A problem was detected during preparation. The device will automatically reset and be ready for a new cycle. - You have used ground coffee instead of coffee beans.
Remove the ground coffee from the coffee bean container using a vacuum cleaner. - Water flows from the coffee spouts when the device is switched off.
This is normal. It is an automatic rinse to clean the coffee spouts. You can disable it in the device settings by deactivating the “Automatic Rinsing” setting.
Steam and Milk
- No steam is emerging.
a. First time using a steam cycle and little or no steam emerges: Verify the steam nozzle is not blocked. See “Quick Guide” in Section 6 for steam nozzle cleaning. If the steam nozzle is not blocked, perform the following procedure once: Empty the water tank and temporarily remove the Claris Aqua-Filter System cartridge. Fill the water tank with mineral water (> 100 mg/l) and run consecutive steam cycles (5 to 10 cycles) into a container until a constant steam jet is produced. Reinsert the cartridge into the water tank.
b. The steam nozzle previously worked: Verify the steam nozzle is not blocked. See “Quick Guide” in Section 6 for steam nozzle cleaning. If steam output still does not function after the above steps, contact your KRUPS customer service.
2) Water or steam emerges from the steam nozzle in an unusual way.
Check if the steam nozzle is correctly positioned on the mounting joint and if the mounting joint is securely attached to the steam outlet. A few drops may flow from the steam nozzle at the beginning or end of preparation.
Maintenance
- The device has not prompted for descaling.
The descaling cycle is necessary when frequently preparing milk beverages with steam or hot water. If you only brew coffee, descaling is less frequent. - Coffee grounds in the drip tray.
A small amount of ground coffee may enter the drip tray. The machine is designed to pump out excess coffee grounds to keep the flow zone clean. - The indicator light ?️ lights up after emptying the coffee grounds container.
Reinsert the coffee grounds container. - The indicator light ? lights up after refilling the water tank.
Ensure the tank is correctly positioned on the device. The float at the bottom of the tank must move freely. Check and release the float if necessary. - During the first phase of descaling, no water comes out of the nozzles: This is normal. Only if the machine is severely blocked will water be dispensed from the nozzles.
Beverages
- Coffee flows too slowly.
Turn the grind adjustment knob to the right for coarser ground coffee (depending on the coffee type). Perform one or more cleaning cycles. Change the Claris Aqua-Filter System cartridge. - Coffee is too weak or not full-bodied enough.
Ensure the coffee bean container has coffee and that the beans move down properly. Avoid oily, caramelized, or flavored coffees that may not be processed correctly. Reduce the quantity and increase the preparation strength using the coffee strength function. Turn the grind adjustment knob for finer ground coffee. Prepare your beverage using the 2-cup function in two cycles. - The espresso or coffee is not hot enough.
Increase the coffee temperature in the device settings. Warm the cup by rinsing it with hot water before starting beverage preparation. Perform a rinse cycle before starting coffee preparation. - Clear water flows from the coffee spouts before each coffee: A preheating phase occurs when you start a preparation, which may cause a small amount of water to exit the coffee spouts.
If any of the above problems persist, contact KRUPS customer service.
