Functional Overview

The HTC-915 Controller manages heat tracing applications by receiving input from temperature sensors and controlling heating elements. It can be configured for various operational modes and includes alarm functions for safety and monitoring. The system can also interface with an optional HTC-915-LIM limiter for enhanced protection against over-temperature conditions.

Operator Console & Operation

The console features an alpha-numeric display and a 6-key keypad for operation. Key functions include:

  • SHIFT: Activates alternate functions.
  • TEST: Initiates a 30-second tracing test.
  • BACK: Exits the current menu or cancels edits.
  • ENTER: Selects menu items or accepts parameter values.
  • Up/Down Arrows (⬆️ / ⬇️): Navigate menus and adjust values.

LED indicators display the operating mode (SHIFT, ALARM, MONITOR, CONFIG) and the status of the alarm and control outputs.

Limiter Functionality

The optional HTC-915-LIM limiter provides additional safety by tripping the heating circuit if certain conditions are met, such as exceeding the setpoint or detecting sensor failures.

  • Limiter Current Sensor Input: Can be configured to allow temperature overshoot if no current is flowing, useful for external heat sources. Sensors are monitored for short circuit and cable breakage.
  • Limiter Outputs: Includes a control output (typically for an EMR) and an alarm output that changes state upon limiter trip, power-up, or detected faults.
  • Limiter Reset: Requires manual reset after tripping, only possible if the actual temperature is below the limit temperature minus hysteresis. Reset methods include console, limiter unit button, external input, or DCS system.

Configuration

The HTC-915 system can be configured using the console's menu system. Key configuration areas include:

  • Basic Mode Menu: For essential settings like Control Setpoint, Lo TS 1, Lo Load, Switch Control Mode, Circuit Breaker, Temp. Units, and Feature Mode.
  • Advanced Mode Menus: Provides more detailed settings for temperature alarms (TS Alarms), other alarms, point setup, and miscellaneous configurations.
  • Communication Setup Sub-Menu: Configures communication parameters such as Protocol (Modbus RTU/ASCII), Address, Baud Rate, Parity, and Tx Delay.

Note: Factory default settings are provided for firmware V1.0X. Users are responsible for verifying and adjusting configurations for their specific applications.

Installation and Maintenance

  • Installation Personnel: Must be qualified and familiar with electrical equipment and safety practices.
  • Installation Location: Consider atmospheric conditions, accessibility, and ambient temperature.
  • Operator Safety: Ensure all power sources are de-energized before maintenance. The HTC-915 module requires protection by external over-current and disconnect devices.
  • Mounting: Designed for standard 35 mm x 7.5 mm DIN rail mounting.
  • Maintenance: The HTC-915 is designed to be maintenance-free. Inoperative components should be returned to Chemelex.
  • Cleaning: Use a damp cloth only when disconnected from power. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Electrical Connection: Use screw connections suitable for 0.5 to 2.5 mm² cables. Do not rely on the controller as a disconnect device.
  • Installation Notes: Isolate the unit from the mains supply when working on it. Be aware of multiple power sources. Avoid magnetic or electric fields. Route cables separately. Use twisted and screened cables for sensor extensions, with shields earthed on the controller side.
