Stripes, dots, florals, fractals... while the shapes might shift, pattern has been a mainstay of interior design for centuries. It only takes a look at the famed Sanderson archives to see that; founded in 1860, the brand has long combined its timeless British sensibility and hand-drawn patterns to create an array of bold fabrics and wallpapers. With a history that runs parallel to John Lewis, which began life as a draper's shop in 1864, a collaboration was surely overdue.

But, you ask, how to combine these vibrantly patterned pieces in your own home? "Select a cohesive colour palette," says Sanderson's senior stylist, Emma Coles. "A pattern's style and scale can vary, but sticking to a unified colour scheme helps pull everything together beautifully."

With those principles in mind, the collection has been designed so that each of the elements work in harmony: "we love to pair florals with geometric patterns or stripes", says Coles. Take that as your cue to mix and match to your heart's content.

The easiest way to approach tablescaping is to invest in pieces that can be mixed and matched to create both classic or maximalist tablescapes. Start by breathing life into your crockery by layering and stacking your plates before adding a bowl of the same colour or an accent sideplate on top of a dinner plate, then top with a napkin.

Contemporary white dinnerware is seeing a huge resurgence and is always worth investing in. Dipped glaze will be popular this year: mix and match deep shades of brown for a really warm tone.

Make every place matter when you're having friends and loved ones over for dinner. You are making memories so a tablecloth, napkin and personal place card (mine often done by my children which we have kept for years) go a long way.

Painting a room can feel daunting but it doesn't have to be. Think of it like 'posh dusting' - you can always repaint. Do the biggest swatch of colour choices you can fit on the walls and sit with it at different times of the day or evening to see how the light works with it. It's often nice to pick out a colour that is reflected in a piece of art to create a thread. Every surface is another colour opportunity so don't forget the ceiling and the skirting boards at the same time.

I love to overlay rugs to make a sort of patchwork, especially if I haven't one that's big enough or the right shape for the room. In my bathroom I have about ten or so mat size cotton rugs that I rotate around so they fit in. I love the colour and pattern mix and clash.

I often pick a colour that I am particularly drawn to at the time, it's usually a particular shade of green but my latest one is orange. Then I'll find small objects like a vase or candlestick, lampshade or cushion that has that exact colour in it.
