LUT-DMX DMX 512 Control Interface
Description
The LUT-DMX DMX 512 Control Interface allows GRAFIK Eye lighting controls to operate lighting and other equipment that uses the DMX 512 protocol. This includes:
- Strobes, fiber optic lighting, and LED-based lamps.
- Fogger machines.
- Animated characters and motorized fixtures.
Example of Usage
A DMX 512-controlled fiber optic fixture can be set up such that Channel 5 controls the color channel or dial setting, and Channel 6 controls the shutter open/close. The Control Unit's scenes can be configured so that Zone 5 intensity corresponds to the desired fiber optic color, and Zone 6 intensity corresponds to the desired shutter open/close. When a scene is selected at the Control Unit, the DMX 512 Interface converts the new scene's zone intensities into DMX 512 channel settings, allowing the fiber optics to automatically change color and shutter open/close.
Specifications

System Communications and Capacity
Low-voltage IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 wiring connects the LUT-DMX Interface to other components. One LUT-DMX is used per system, requiring no address. It does not count towards the maximum number of addresses (Wallstations, Control Interfaces, or Control Units) allowed on an IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 wiring link.
DMX 512 Link
Features three terminals for connecting the LUT-DMX to DMX 512-controlled equipment. Each terminal accepts up to two #18 AWG (1.0 mm²) wires. The link must be 1000 feet or less and may be extended with the Lutron MUX-RPTR interface. The link must begin and end with Link Terminators.
Environment
Operating temperature: 32 - 104 °F (0 - 40 °C). Relative humidity less than 90% non-condensing.
Dimensions
Measurements are shown in inches (mm).
Front View Description
The front of the LUT-DMX unit displays DIP Switches (SW1, SW2), Output Status LEDs (LED1, LED2), a Ground Screw, and terminal blocks labeled J1, J2, J3 for MUX Link to GRAFIK Eye® Control Units and Wallstations, and DMX 512 OUTPUT. Terminal blocks are clearly marked for CONTROL LINK EXT SW and DMX ZONE SELECT functions.
Side View Description
The side view indicates the unit's dimensions and the entry point for IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 Wiring.
Mounting
The LUT-DMX can be mounted on a 4 in (101.6 mm) square junction box or directly to the wall. Ensure the metal casing is grounded by connecting a ground wire to the ground screw. Wires do not feed through the back of the unit. A diagram illustrates mounting on a 4x4 junction box with wires inserted through punch-outs.
Functions and Zone Capacities
DIP Switch Settings
DIP switch settings determine the LUT-DMX Interface functionality:
- DIP Switches 1 & 2:
- Settings 1 & 2: Works with GRAFIK Eye® 3000 and 4000 Series Control Units, enabling operation of up to 48 or 64 total GRAFIK Eye® lighting zones and DMX 512 channels.
- Settings 3 & 4: Works with GRAFIK 5000™, GRAFIK 6000®, and GRAFIK 7000™ Systems, enabling operation of DMX 512-controlled equipment. GRAFIK 5000™ supports up to 128 total lighting zones and DMX 512 channels. GRAFIK 6000® supports up to 512 total lighting zones and DMX 512 channels.
- Settings 5 & 6: Allows DMX 512 stage boards to control GP Dimming Panels.
- Settings 7 & 8: Used only to retrofit existing GRAFIK Eye® lighting, specifically for the GP 4000 combiner function.
DMX 512 Link Wiring
Connect the DMX 512 link terminals on the LUT-DMX Interface to the input terminals on DMX 512-controlled equipment. Each terminal accepts up to two #18 AWG (1.0 mm²) wires. The link must be 1000 feet or less and must begin and end with Link Terminators.
DMX 512 Link Terminals on LUT-DMX and Connections:
LUT-DMX Terminal | Connect To |
---|---|
1: DMX 512 system COMMON | DO NOT connect to COMMON on GRAFIK Eye Control Unit or Processor. |
2: DMX 512 system DATA - (MUX) | Pin 2 on DMX 512 equipment. |
3: DMX 512 system DATA + (MUX) | Pin 3 on DMX 512 equipment. |
Wiring Diagrams and Connections
IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 Wiring for GRAFIK Eye® 3000/4000 Systems
Make daisy-chain connections to the low-voltage IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 MUX Link terminals on the front of the LUT-DMX Interface. Avoid T-taps; run all wires in and out of the terminal block. Each terminal accepts up to two #18 AWG (1.0 mm²) wires. A diagram illustrates the rear view of a GRAFIK Eye Control Unit connected via Lutron Cable (GRX-CBL-346S) to the LUT-DMX Interface, which then connects to DMX 512 Equipment. The diagram shows the maximum link length of 1000 ft (305 m) and the terminal connections for DMX 512 OUTPUT (COM, Data -, Data +).
IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 Terminal Connections (GRAFIK Eye 3000/4000)
For GRAFIK Eye® 3000 Control Units:
- Use two #18 AWG (1.0 mm²) conductors for common (terminal 1) and 12 V- (terminal 2). Ensure terminal 2 is wired correctly.
- Use one shielded, twisted pair #18 AWG (1.0 mm²) for the data link (terminals 3 and 4).
For GRAFIK Eye® 4000 Control Units:
- Use two #12 AWG (2.5 mm²) conductors for common (terminal 1) and 24 V- (terminal 2). Note: These larger conductors may not fit in the terminals; connect as shown in the diagram.
- Use one shielded, twisted pair #18 AWG (1.0 mm²) for the data link (terminals 3 and 4).
- Connect the Drain/Shield as shown in the diagram. Do not connect to Ground (Earth) or Wallstation/Control Interfaces. Connect the bare drain wires and cut off the outside shield.
A diagram details these terminal connections, showing wire gauges and specific terminal assignments (e.g., D: Drain/Shield, 3: MUX, 4: MUX) for the LUT-DMX unit.
IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 Wiring for GRAFIK 5000/6000/7000 Systems
Connect the LUT-DMX on the Power Panel Link. Make daisy-chain connections to the low-voltage IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 MUX Link terminals on the front of the LUT-DMX Interface. Use Link Terminators at the beginning and end of the Power Panel Link. A diagram shows the system architecture including GP Dimming Panel, LUT-DMX Interface, Processor Panel, Control Unit, Control Interface, and Wallstations, connected via Power Panel Link and User Interface Link to PC.
IEC PELV/NEC® Class 2 Terminal Connections (GRAFIK 5000/6000/7000)
- Use two #12 AWG (2.5 mm²) conductors for common (terminal 1) and 32 V- (terminal 2). Note: These larger conductors may not fit in the terminals; connect as shown.
- Use one shielded, twisted pair #18 AWG (1.0 mm²) for the data link (terminals 3 and 4).
- Connect Drain/Shield as shown. Do not connect to Ground (Earth) or Wallstation/Control Interfaces. Connect the bare drain wires and cut off the outside shield.
- Do not connect the extra #18 AWG (1.0 mm²) wire to the LUT-DMX. Connect it only to Dimming Panels as a “sense line” for emergency (essential) lighting.
A diagram details these terminal connections, showing wire gauges and specific terminal assignments (e.g., D: Drain/Shield, 3: MUX, 4: MUX) for the LUT-DMX unit.
