VLAN Configuration

VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) group devices for improved network traffic and security. Plan your VLAN setup carefully.

Configuring VLAN on the Altronix Netway4EBT3 Series Switch:

  1. Ensure the laptop/PC used for programming is on a port assigned to your first VLAN configuration. By default, management is assigned to VLAN-1.
  2. CAUTION: Changing VLAN ID 1 (industry standard VLAN HOST address) should be done with caution and only locally, as it will drop the original HOST connection. Local access then requires physical reconnection.
  3. Note: Only the configured VLAN network allows access to IP management.
  4. In the Network Section, click the VLAN Tab.
  5. Click 'Add VLAN'.
  6. Enter a name for the VLAN.
  7. Enter a VLAN ID (e.g., 10, 20). Ensure this ID is associated with the main switch's VLAN setup and your programming device is on the same ID. Note: VLAN ID can be any value from 2-4094.
  8. Assign VLAN QOS (Quality of Service) priority (0 = Lowest, 7 = Highest).
  9. Pick a Trunk port (Tagged Ports) for main network traffic connections to switches, WAPs, etc.
  10. Pick Access port(s) (Untagged Ports) for devices like Cameras. If programming locally, ensure your laptop/PC is connected to one of these ports.
  11. Save Configuration.
  12. Repeat steps 2-9 to add another VLAN.
  13. If the unit is programmed incorrectly and access is lost, try moving your PC's port on the main switch to a correct port, or perform a factory reset as a last resort.
  14. Advanced Port Settings:

    Unknown VID Packet Forwarding Configuration:

On ingress unknown VID, forward to a fixed set of ports. Default is no forwarding.

    Configuration on Ingress Untagged Traffic:

Trunk Port action for ingress UNTAGGED packets. Default is do not drop packets.

    Keep Tag on Egress:

Select if ACCESS Ports should keep the VLAN tag when sending egress packets. Default is tags are stripped.

    Preferred VLAN Forwarding:

For ACCESS Ports belonging to more than one VLAN, select the preferred VLAN to forward UNTAGGED ingress packets. Default is the last VLAN created.

Typical VLAN Setup

Diagram (Fig. 2) shows a typical VLAN setup. Example VLAN ID 10 for ports 1-2 and VLAN ID 20 for ports 3-4. It illustrates connections to a host switch via fiber (Trunk, i.e., VLAN ID 10 and 20) and passing through to the next switch (e.g., VLAN ID 0 and/or 20). Any Ethernet port can be used for VLAN Pass Thru.
