5. Health and Safety Information

5.1 General Safety Instructions for Power Tool Use

To ensure user safety when operating any power tool, common sense and respect for the tool are crucial. Read the instruction manual fully and understand how to safely start and stop the machine, especially in an emergency.

  • Keep the work area tidy and clean: Clutter reduces concentration and creates trip hazards. Spilled liquids can cause slipping.
  • Find a suitable location: For bench-mounted machines, ensure good natural or artificial lighting. Avoid damp and dusty locations. For portable tools, do not expose to rain. Never operate power tools near flammable materials.
  • Keep bystanders away: Restrict children, onlookers, and passers-by from the work area. The barrier should extend a suitable distance from the tool user.
  • Unplug and house all power tools not in use: Never leave a power tool unattended while connected to the power supply. Store them in a suitable, locked location away from children, including battery chargers.
  • Do not overload or misuse the tool: Tools are designed for specific purposes. Do not adapt or use a power tool for applications it is not designed for. Select the appropriate tool for the job size. Overloading can lead to tool failure and user injury, including accessories.
  • Dress properly: Loose clothing, long hair, and jewelry are dangerous near moving machinery. Wear close-fitted clothing, tie back long hair, remove jewelry and neckties. Footwear must be fully enclosed with a non-slip sole.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE): Protect against dust, noise, vibration, and swarf. Wear a dust mask if dust or fumes are created. Use vibration-reducing gloves and take breaks for prolonged use. Wear approved safety goggles or a face shield. Always identify hazards and wear suitable protective equipment.
  • Do not breathe contaminated air: If work creates dust or fumes, connect the machine to an extraction system (local or remote) if possible. Working outdoors may also help.
  • Move the machine as instructed: Do not carry handheld machines by the power supply cable. For heavy products, use a second or third person or a mechanical device. Always follow correct moving instructions.
  • Do not overreach: Extending your body too far can cause loss of balance and falls, leading to injury.
  • Maintain your tools correctly: A well-maintained tool operates safely. Replace damaged or missing parts immediately with original manufacturer parts. Keep blades sharp, moving parts clean, oiled or greased, handles clean, and emergency devices working.
  • Wait for the machine to stop: Unless fitted with a safety brake, parts may continue to move. Unplug from the power supply before making adjustments, maintenance, or finishing use.
  • Remove and check setting tools: Before starting, ensure all setting tools or keys are removed and safely away from the machine.
  • Prevent unintentional starting: Before plugging in, ensure the switch is in the OFF position. For portable machines, do not hold near the switch and take care when setting it down to prevent accidental operation.
  • Carefully select an extension lead: Some machines are not suitable for extension leads. If used outdoors, use an outdoor-rated extension lead. Select a lead capable of handling the machine's current. Fully extend the lead to prevent overheating and fire.
  • Concentrate and stay alert: Distractions can cause accidents. Never operate a power tool under the influence of drugs (prescription or otherwise), alcohol, or when feeling tired.
  • Have this tool repaired by a qualified person: This tool conforms to relevant international and local standards. Maintenance and repair should be performed by qualified personnel using only original manufacturer parts to ensure safety.

5.2 Specific Product Use and Care

WARNING: DO NOT USE THIS ASH CAN TO COLLECT HOT ASHES, COALS OR WOOD EMBERS. ALWAYS ALLOW THE RESIDUE FROM STOVES AND FIREPLACES TO COOL FULLY BEFORE COLLECTING WITH THIS ASH CAN.

  7. Never pick up burning cigarettes or other smoking substances.
  8. Never abuse the ash can by standing on it.
  9. Always transport the ash can using the handle.
  10. Only use the metal suction hose provided with this ash can. A normal plastic vacuum cleaner hose is not suitable and may be damaged.
  11. This appliance can be used by children aged 8 years and above and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge if supervised or instructed concerning safe use and understanding of hazards. Children shall not play with the appliance. Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children without supervision.
  12. Substance to be vacuumed: cold ashes from fireplaces, wood/coal stoves, ashtrays, grill.
  13. Empty and clean the vacuum cleaner before and after vacuuming to avoid potential fire hazards.
  14. Do not use for the separation of health-hazardous dusts (dust classes L, M, H).
  15. Vacuum only ashes from admissible fuels.

5.3 Residual Risk

Although safety instructions and operating manuals contain extensive information for safe working, every power tool involves a certain residual risk that cannot be completely excluded by safety mechanisms. Power tools must always be operated with caution!

5.4 Safety Instructions for Mains Powered Chargers & Battery Packs

  • The charger is for indoor use only.
  • Before plugging the charger into the supply, check that the plug and cable are in good repair. Replace damaged items immediately with suitably qualified personnel. If the battery charger casing is damaged, have it checked by a qualified person.
  • Only use a correctly rated mains outlet. Do not plug into site generators, engine generators, or D.C. sources. Do not use unswitched mains socket outlets.
  • Use the correct Draper charger with its corresponding battery pack. Consult the Draper website for more information or your local stockist.
  • Do not charge any other batteries with Draper chargers; any other application is considered misuse.
  • Do not attempt to charge battery packs that are too hot (over 30°C) or too cold (under 5°C). If these conditions apply, set the battery pack aside to “normalise” before charging.
  • Set up the charger and cable in a safe, well-ventilated place where it won't be knocked or tripped over. Ensure ventilation slots in the charger case are not obstructed. Plug the charger into the socket outlet.
  • Inspect the battery pack for damage. If undamaged, plug it into the charger, ensuring correct orientation. Most chargers and batteries have ‘keys’ to prevent incorrect insertion. If you have to ‘force’ the battery pack, check orientation and try again.
  • Switch the charger on and check for correct indicator illumination. Allow the battery pack to charge (refer to specific charger instructions). Once charging is complete, switch the charger off, remove the battery pack, and store. Repeat for multiple battery packs.

Caution: When the battery charger has been continuously used, it will be hot. After charging, allow 15 minutes rest before the next charge.

  • After charging, unplug the charger from the socket outlet by pulling on the plug, not the cable. Store the charger in a dry, secure place.
  • If the correct indications do not occur when the charger is switched on, allow 2-3 minutes for stabilization. If indications still do not occur, switch off, remove the battery pack, unplug the charger, check that contacts are clean, and repeat. If still no indication, switch off, remove the battery pack, unplug the charger, and check the fuse. If the fuse is blown, replace and repeat. If the fuse blows again, or if it was intact, attempt no further action. Refer the charger to a suitably qualified person for repair.

Battery Packs

  • Before charging, read the instructions.
  • For indoor use. Do not expose to rain.
  • Only use Draper D20 battery packs with this product. Consult your Draper stockist.

If electrolyte contacts eyes, flush with copious amounts of water only and seek medical attention immediately, relaying the information above.

5.5 Connection to the Power Supply (Charger)

Caution: Risk of electric shock. Do not open.

This appliance is supplied with an approved plug and cable for safety. The fuse value is marked on the plug pin face. If the fuse needs replacing, ensure the substitute is of the correct rating, approved to BS1362 and ASTA or BSI Kite marked. The fuse cover is removable with a small plain slot screwdriver. Ensure the fuse cover is replaced before connecting to an electrical outlet. If the cover is missing, a replacement must be obtained or the plug replaced. If a replacement plug is to be fitted, it must be carried out by a qualified electrician. A damaged or incomplete plug, once cut from the cable, should be disabled to prevent connection to a live electrical outlet.

This appliance is Class II (double insulated) and requires no earth connection as supplementary insulation protects against electric shock in case of basic insulation failure. It is designed for connection to a power supply matching the rating label and compatible with the fitted plug.

If an extension lead is required, use an approved and compatible lead rated for this appliance. Follow all instructions supplied with the extension lead.

IMPORTANT: If using an extension lead, follow the instructions regarding maximum load while the cable is wound. If in doubt, ensure the entire cable is unwound. Using a coiled extension lead will generate heat that could melt the lead and cause a fire.

  • Supporting the battery charger with your hand, pull the battery from the battery charger.

Caution: If the battery charger has been in continuous use, it will be hot. After charging, allow the charger 15 minutes to cool until next use.

8.3 Battery Pack Protection Features

If the battery is charged when warm due to use or sunlight, it will not recharge. Allow it to cool before charging. If the red indicator flickers rapidly (0.2 second intervals), check for and remove foreign objects in the charger's battery slot. If no foreign objects are present, the battery or charger may be malfunctioning. Allow them to normalise and try again. If the fault persists, contact Draper Tools.

  • Overcharging protection: Ensures the battery pack cannot be overcharged. When full charge is reached, the transformer/charger automatically shuts off, protecting internal components.
  • Over-discharging protection: Stops the battery pack from discharging below the recommended lowest safety voltage.
  • Overheating protection: The battery pack contains an internal thermistor cut-off sensor that shuts off if it becomes too hot during operation (e.g., due to overload or extended use). Up to 30 minutes cooling time may be required.
  • Current protection: If the battery is overloaded and maximum current draw is exceeded, the battery will shut off to protect internal components. It will resume working once excessive current draw returns to normal.
  • Short circuit protection: If the battery pack short circuits, the protection will immediately stop operation.

8.4 Battery Pack Charge Status

To display the amount of charge left in the battery pack, press the charge level indicator button (12.2).

8.5 Battery Life Efficiency and Charging Advice

  • Avoid recharging at high temperatures. A rechargeable battery will be hot immediately after use. Recharging immediately after use will deteriorate internal chemical substance and shorten battery life. Allow the battery to cool before recharging.
  • The battery should only be used and/or charged when its temperature is between 5°C and 30°C.
  • The battery needs to be warmed-up or cooled down to prevent damage to internal components.

Note: If the battery is too hot or too cold, allow it to 'normalise' before use or charging.

Note: Failure to warm up or cool down a battery could result in serious damage to the battery, charger, and user.

9. Operating the Vacuum Cleaner

9.1 Operating the Ash Vacuum

Switch the machine on by pressing the on/off switch (10).

(Figure 8: Image showing a hand pressing the on/off switch (10) on the vacuum cleaner.)

NOTE: Return the battery to the charger immediately after use so that it will be ready and fully charged for the next use. Ensure that the product is fully inserted into the charger.

IMPORTANT: The ash can should be positioned on a firm, level surface. Do not cover the ash can and always position it with good all-round air ventilation. The ash can must remain upright.

  1. Switch on the ash can and use the suction tube to collect the ash.
  2. When moving the ash can:
    • Always use the handle.
    • Do not lift it by (or place a strain on) the hose or cable.
    • Always switch it off and disconnect it from the 20V battery.

CAUTION: Make sure that fireplaces and stoves are cold before you attempt to vacuum them clean. Wait until the ash has cooled down completely before you begin to collect it.

  • Take care not to collect material which appears to have cooled down on the outside but which may still be hot on the inside. Hot ash particles may ignite again in the air flow.
  • Any ash which has a temperature exceeding 40°C may damage the ash can.
  • Do not attempt to quickly extinguish fires in fireplaces or stoves with water to achieve cool ash. The construction material in the fireplace or stove may not withstand sudden temperature variations and suffer permanent damage.
  • Continuously check the tube and ash can for excess temperature during use. If you notice a significant temperature rise, switch off immediately and disconnect the ash can from the power supply. Let the ash can cool down under supervision before emptying the vacuumed material.

CAUTION: Excessive temperatures can lead to damage to the suction hose and the ash can and cause a risk of fire.

10. Maintenance

10.1 Cleaning and Maintenance

NOTE: Regular inspection and cleaning reduces the necessity for maintenance operations and will keep your tools in good working condition. The motor must be correctly ventilated during operation. Avoid blocking the air inlets.

Release the hook (7) and remove the top cover.

(Figure 9: Image showing the hooks (7) being released to open the vacuum cleaner's top cover.)

Unscrew the butterfly nut and remove the filter (11).

(Figure 10: Image showing the butterfly nut being unscrewed to remove the filter (11).)

Empty the dust container.

(Figure 11: Image showing the dust container being emptied.)

Clean the filter (11) by shaking to dislodge and dispose of any ash.

(Figure 12: Image showing the dust filter (11) being shaken to clean it.)

Note: Replacement filters are available - see drapertools.com.

Note: Do not leave the filter to dry in direct sunlight.

10.2 Care and Storage

  1. When not in use, turn off using the switch on top of the ash can, then disconnect and remove the 20V Li-ion battery.
  2. Do not change filters, or carry out any cleaning or servicing, without first disconnecting the ash can from the power supply.
  3. Keep the external surfaces clean. Avoid impact damage & do not allow the ash can to come into contact with abrasive or corrosive materials.
  4. Do not use solvents, thinners or alcohol to clean the ash can, as these chemicals will damage the finish. With the ash can disconnected from the power supply, use a dry cloth to wipe over the casing.
  5. When not in use the ash can should be stored in a secure, dry place, out of the reach of children. DO NOT leave it exposed to the elements and avoid direct sunlight, direct heat, rain/moisture etc.
  6. Only use parts and accessories recommended in this manual. The use of unauthorised accessories or attachments is not permitted and may result in personal injury or damage to the ash can.
  7. Do not attempt to repair or modify the ash can. Do not attempt any electrical repair yourself. Consult a qualified electrician.

10.3 Battery Removal and Disposal

NOTE: This product uses Lithium Ion rechargeable and recyclable batteries. When the batteries no longer hold a charge, they should be removed from the Vac and recycled. They must not be incinerated or composted.

To remove the battery pack for disposal:

  1. First, before attempting to disassemble the product, turn it on and leave it on until the motor completely stops ensuring a complete discharge of the batteries.
  2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the seven screws securing the two housing halves.
