Hydraulic Fluid Specification
Hydraulic fluid viscosity affects flow and reaction to heat. Low viscosity is thinner than high viscosity. Choosing the right viscosity is essential. The ISO (International Standards Organisation) viscosity grading system measures kinematic viscosity in centistokes (cSt) at 40°. This equipment is suited to ISO grade 22-32 (SAE grade 5W-15W) hydraulic fluid or monograde oil.
The fluid must be supplied during use for lubrication and optimum performance, and acts as a rust inhibitor when not in use. Most major petroleum companies produce suitable lubricants.
This air tool operates at a maximum pressure of 90psi and must be controlled via a combined regulator/oil/water separator (e.g., Draper ALFRL12 unit). Always check machine operating pressure before use.
WARNING: WATER IN THE COMPRESSOR TANK WILL CAUSE SERIOUS CORROSION TO YOUR AIR TOOLS AND SHOULD BE DRAINED DAILY TO AVOID EXCESSIVE WATER IN YOUR AIR SUPPLY. DIRTY WET AIR RAPIDLY SHORTENS THE LIFE OF YOUR AIR TOOL.
For hoses longer than 25ft, it is advisable to increase the hose bore to the next larger size (e.g., 3/8") to ensure adequate pressure and volume.
Recommended Air Supply Set Up
The recommended air supply setup includes:
- Air Supply
- Regulator
- Oiler
- Air Line Hose
- Quick Coupler
- Nipple
- Whip Hose
- To Your Air Tool
The setup should include a water separation component. DO NOT INSTALL QUICK COUPLING HERE. Remember to DRAIN DAILY.
After each use and before prolonged storage, lubricate the equipment with approximately 1.5ml of oil directly down the air inlet.
General Safety Instructions
Draper Tools recommends this machine should not be modified or used for applications other than its design. Contact Draper if unsure of applications.
- Power tools shall not be used in potentially explosive atmospheres unless specifically designed for that purpose.
- Unexpected tool movement due to reaction forces or breakage may cause injuries.
- Power tools shall be isolated from the energy source before changing or adjusting tools.
Specific Risks:
- Risk of crushing by torque between a reaction bar and the workpiece.
- Risk of loose clothing, hair, etc., being caught in the rotating spindle.
- Risk of injury if hands are not kept away from the reaction bar, especially when unscrewing in confined spaces.
- Risk of injury if hands are not kept away from nutrunner sockets.
- Risk of danger from high-speed splinters from screwdrivers in case of socket failure.
- Risk of injury from whipping air hoses.
- Unexpected direction of inserted tool movement can cause a hazardous situation.
Use only sockets and adapters in good condition intended for power tools. Adopt a suitable posture to counteract movement. Release the start/stop device during power interruption. Secure the tool on a suspension device if used. Ensure adequate air supply pressure. Use only recommended lubricants. Release pressure when not in use and disconnect from air line. Do not modify the screwdriver.
DO NOT CARRY OR MOVE THE TOOL BY THE AIR LINE. Use only genuine Draper replacement parts.
When starting or finishing fastener removal/installation, there is a risk of crushing between the tool and workpiece due to sudden movement or reaction forces.
Hydraulic Fluid Data Sheet
Always wear gloves and goggles when dealing with hydraulic fluid. Hydraulic fluid is refined mineral oil. It is not considered hazardous to health under normal conditions of use.
First Aid:
- Ingestion: Wash mouth with clean water and seek medical advice. Do not induce vomiting.
- Eyes: Flush eyes with clean water for 5-10 minutes and seek medical advice.
- Skin: Wash area with soap and water. Remove affected clothing and wash. Seek medical advice if irritation persists.
- Other: Seek medical advice immediately.
Fire Safety:
Hydraulic fluid is combustible. Use foam or dry powder fire extinguisher. Do not use water.
Environmental Precautions:
Prevent spread of spillage. Do not contaminate rivers, water ways, or drains. Contain spillage with sand or grit. Warn bystanders as spillage may present a slip hazard. Hydraulic fluid is not biodegradable and may bioaccumulate.
Residual Risk: All power tools involve a residual risk. Air tools must always be operated with caution.

Scope
This air screwdriver is designed for the insertion, tightening, and releasing of screws and fixings. Any other use is forbidden.
Unpacking
After removing packing material, ensure the product is in perfect condition with no visible damaged parts. If in doubt, do not use the product and contact the dealer. Dispose of packaging materials (plastic bags, polystyrene, etc.) in an appropriate refuse collection container. Keep away from children as they are potential sources of danger.
Assembly
Whip Hose (Fig. 1)
To connect the air screwdriver to an air line, a 1/4" BSP male thread whip hose is required. Wind a length of PTFE tape around the thread before securing the hose. The connection must be tight for an airtight union. (Draper Stock No. 54438, 63389).
NOTE: Disconnect from the air supply before carrying out adjustments, servicing, or maintenance.
Quick Release Bit Holder (Fig. 2)
These screwdrivers are equipped with a 1/4" quick release bit holder for easy attachment/release of screwdriver bits. To insert a bit, push the chuck collar (A) forward, insert the screwdriver bit, then release the chuck collar. Ensure the bit is securely held in place.
Operation and Use
NOTE: Before connecting to the air supply, reduce the line pressure according to the specification.
Trigger (Figs. 3 & 4)
These screwdrivers feature a "sprung dog clutch," meaning the screwdriver will not operate unless the bit is fully depressed into the screw head. Confirm direction of rotation before starting. Pull trigger (B) to start the motor. Locate the screw bit into the screw head and gently push down.
NOTE: Before tool operation, ensure compressor reservoirs are drained of condensate, along with all connected air lines. Check and drain the air line regulator's water trap and fill the lubrication reservoir.
Dust and Swarf
A correctly fitted dust mask, suitable for the activity and relevant standard, must be worn. For activities involving exposure to fine wood dust, a mask rated to at least FFP2 should be used.
Swarf produced by metal drilling is extremely sharp. Take precautions when clearing swarf. The burr left on the edge is also sharp and should be removed with a suitable tool. Always wear safety goggles.
Screwdriving
To prevent slip or damage to the screwhead, match the screwdriver bit to the screwhead size. To remove screws, move the direction switch to the reversing position, apply pressure to the screwhead, and depress the trigger slowly.
NOTE: Disconnect from the air supply before carrying out adjustment, servicing, or maintenance.
Direction Control
Slide the selector (C) fully left or right to engage forward or reverse. Use the trigger to adjust the speed setting most appropriate for the application.
Adjustable Clutch (Figs. 5 & 6)
These screwdrivers offer an external adjustable clutch feature for setting the torque. Insert the hexagonal key (D) supplied into the quick release bit holder. Rotate the hexagonal key until the spindle lock hole (E) appears in the window. Insert the spindle lock pin (F) into the spindle lock hole (E). Holding the pin in place, rotate the hexagonal key clockwise to lower the torque (to a minimum of 1.13Nm) or anti-clockwise to raise the torque (to a maximum of 10.17Nm).
Maintenance
Every Day:
- Before connection to the air supply:
- Drain the compressor reservoir of condensate.
- Drain the air lines of condensate.
- Drain the combined separator filter, regulator, water trap.
- Fill the combined separator filter, regulator, lubricant reservoir.
- Check the line pressure is correct for the tool.
After Daily Use:
- Repeat the above procedures.
- Lubricate the tool with approximately 1.5ml of oil directly down the air inlet.
- Use only genuine Draper replacement parts.
